Jeśli jednak, to najwięcej okazji do żalu mieli w 2003 roku, kiedy ukazał się najlepszy album Areny - "Contagion".
Zespół, założony wraz z innym weteranem sceny progresywnej, klawiszowcem Clivem Nolanem, w owym 2003 roku obchodził swoje ośmiolecie. Niezbyt to może imponujący wiek, ale to, że wydał do tej pory cztery udane albumy i zdążył w tym czasie zaliczyć kilka zmian składu (głównie na stanowisku wokalisty), zmienia nieco postać rzeczy.
Fani czekali na następcę interesującego "Immortal"trzy lata. Było warto! Nie wiem czy Nolanowi znudziło się neo-progowe "smęcenie" końca lat 90, ale "Contagion" od początku atakuje bez litości. Brzmienie momentami ociera się o hard rock. Utwory są krótsze, bardziej piosenkowe, nie usłyszmy tutaj wyjątkowo rozbudowanych suit, znanych z poprzednich wydawnictw. Mamy za to samo mięso i esencję, przebojowego grania. Słychać nieco bardziej eksperymentalne podejście, nie brakuje ciekawych efektów dźwiękowych i sampli urozmaicających utwory.
Muzycznie mamy tutaj mieszankę nowego i świeżego, z motywami charakterystycznymi dla Areny. Mam na myśli zwłaszcza bardzo charakterystyczne partie klawiszy i ich dialogi z gitarami (John Mitchell wchodzi na wyżyny swoich umiejętności). Nie jest to na pewno jednowymiarowy album. Trudno przecież jedną miarą mierzyć takie kawałki jak "Witch Hunt, "Salamander, "Tsunami"czy "Mea Culpa". Na płycie znajduje się kilka utworów instrumentalnych, zapewniających chwilę zadumy pomiędzy narracją historii, będącej tematem przewodnim płyty. A właśnie, historia tym razem potraktowana została priorytetowo (przed wydaniem albumu Nolan zapowiadał wydanie książki na ten temat). Nie wdając się tutaj w "spoilerowanie" - warto się z tą opowieścią, pięknie ilustrowaną muzycznie, zapoznać. Jeśli komuś będzie mało, zespół wydał jeszcze dwie epki, będące uzupełnieniem materiału.
Reasumując, w 2003 roku konkurencja neo-progowa miała czego pozazdrościć Arenie. Według mnie "Contagion" jest najlepszym neo-progowym albumem "tamtej okolicy czasowej", lepszym od wydanych w podobnym czasie płyt Pendragon, IQ czy nawet Marillion. Nawet Marillion...
