Amplifier to jeden z najbardziej jaskrawych debiutów w muzyce progresywnej na przestrzeni kilku lat. Rozpoznawalność grupa wypracowała jednak głównie poprzez ogólnoeuropejskie trasy koncertowe, gdzie dzieliła scenę razem z Dream Theater, a następnie z rodakami z Anathema, gdzie miała szansę występować przed wielotysięczną widownią (w Polsce formacja grała trzykrotnie). Już same występy przed tak uznawanymi w muzycznym świecie markami muszą świadczyć o pozycji i zespołu (choć od siebie dodam, że Amplifier na żywo nie oczarowuje).
W skład "Ośmiorniczki" wchodzą dwa krążki, zawierające po około godzinie muzyki. Od razu trzeba zaznaczyć, że tak duża zawartość muzyki wydawnictwu bardziej szkodzi niż pomaga, biorąc pod uwagę choćby fakt, że muzyka Amplifier łatwo przyswajalna nie jest. Od siebie dodam, że mi osobiście nigdy nie udało się „dociągnąć” do końca dwugodzinnego cyklu z The Octopus, mimo naprawdę szczerych chęci. Przyznam, że ciągle próbuję odpowiedzieć sobie na pytanie, po co muzycy progresywni (bo tych z innych działek muzycznych rozumiem) zapychają swe płyty muzyką niemal do cna lub (i) wydają dwukrążkowe wydawnictwa, skoro bardziej im to szkodzi, niż pomaga… Cóż, ich sprawa.
Tyle suchych faktów. Przejdźmy do czegoś bardziej elektryzującego. Jeśli chodzi o muzykę, to znowu wypada mi powrócić do tematu okładki The Octopus. Muzycznie jest bardzo różnorodnie z perspektywy użytych środków (poplątane macki ośmiornicy są tu dobrym zobrazowaniem materiału), jednak dość jednostajnie, jeśli chodzi o muzyczny klimat (na okładce znajdziemy tylko biały i czarny kolor). Nie ulega żadnym wątpliwościom, że muzyka Amplifier to muzyka progresywna według dzisiejszego znaczenia tego słowa, jednak muzycy ze swym materiałem poniekąd odcinają się od działających obecnie najbardziej popularnych formacji, konstruując bardzo oryginalne, pozbawione pracy kopisty utwory. Brytyjczykom ze swym muzycznym materiałem najbliżej jest do muzyki Tool, jednocześnie przejawiając wiele rozwiązań zbliżonych do psychodeli czy space rocka spod znaku Pink Floyd i Hawkwind (właśnie to psychodeliczno-eksperymentalne zabarwienie zasługuję na najwyższe pochwały). Muzyka zespołu pozbawiona jest gitarowych solówek i instrumentalnej wirtuozerii. Przeważa budowanie kompozycji na bazie dość skostniałych riffów, muzycznej atmosfery i dramaturgii, co trzeba przyznać wychodzi zespołowi różnie. Uwagę zwraca dość popowy, bardzo melodyjny wokal Sela Balamira, który mimo wszystko nie jest największym atutem muzyki Brytyjczyków. Tym jest struktura kompozycji – nad wyraz oryginalna i świeża, a zespołowi dosyć łatwo przychodzi tworzenie muzyki, która w dużym stopniu pozbawiona jest obcych wpływów i głębokich inspiracji.
Cóż, trochę pozrzędziłem, lecz absolutnie nie mam najmniejszego zamiaru powiedzieć, że The Octopus to płyta słaba. Broń Boże! Jest to naprawdę solidny krążek, zawartych na nim jest sporo świetnych partii, od wydawnictwa bije twórczy zapał i pasja. Zespołowi Amplifier w żadnym wypadku nie można odmówić oryginalności, swoją muzyką utwierdzając mnie w przekonaniu, że zespołu grającego podobnie do Brytyjczyków naprawdę ciężko się doszukać, co jest pewnego rodzaju ewenementem. Mimo wielu zalet, wydawnictwu można sporo zarzucić. Po sporym czasie spędzonym nad "Ośmiorniczką" doszedłem do wniosku, że za cenę oryginalności, emanowania własnym stylem i kreacją muzycznej osobowości zespół pozbył się spójności, wartkości i płynności albumu. Na The Octopus niewiele jest momentów trwale zapadających w pamięć, cały album jak i poszczególne kompozycje wydają się przekombinowane (utwór The Wave to jeden z nielicznych wyjątków), Brytyjczykom brakuje elementów, które przyciągnęły i oczarowałyby słuchacza, a w ostatecznym rozrachunku, nie powraca się do niego z większym zapałem. The Octopus w dużym stopniu cechuje tak zwana beznamiętność, choć wielu walorów na pewno nie można mu odmówić.
Ostatecznie oceniając The Octopus nie jestem w stanie wystawić jednoznacznej oceny. Z jednej strony dzieło Amplifier mnie przyciąga, z drugiej odpycha. Nie ulega jednak wątpliwościom, że jest to do tej pory najlepsze dzieło formacji i miejmy nadzieję, że nie pozostanie ostatnim słowem grupy z Wysp. Wkładając do odtwarzacza podpisany przez wszystkich muzyków zespołu krążek The Octopus za każdym razem trzymam kciuki za kolejne dzieło.
