Formation
Après un diplôme de l'IDHEC, Christian de Chalonge est second, puis premier assistant auprès de plusieurs réalisateurs (Henri-Georges Clouzot, Alain Jessua, Georges Franju, Tony Richardson).
Carrière au cinéma
En 1967, c'est non sans courage que Christian de Chalonge opte d'emblée pour un cinéma engagé à l'époque où une large frange de la profession se limite souvent à des productions relativement neutres. Avec O salto (1967) qui retrace l'itinéraire de plusieurs familles portugaises arrivées clandestinement en France pour y travailler, il remet en cause, un an avant les événements de mai 68, les idéaux confortables et bourgeois de la société française et obtient un premier succès. Il lui faut néanmoins attendre quatre ans pour réaliser son deuxième long métrage, L'alliance (1971), où il met des acteurs de renom (Anna Karina, Jean-Pierre Darras, Tsilla Chelton) au service d'une histoire de couple empreinte d'une touche fantastique. Peu prolifique, il connaît de nouveau le succès huit ans plus tard avec L'argent des autres (1978) où il exprime une vision pessimiste du monde à travers la description d'une société ultra-capitaliste. Il ne quitte pas le fantastique en adaptant le roman de Robert Merle Malevil (1981), description d'une terre ravagée par une catastrophe nucléaire. A nouveau huit années de purgatoire avant la sortie du Docteur Petiot, interprété par un inquiétant Michel Serrault, qui met en scène un serial killer des plus énigmatiques. En 1991, Christian de Chalonge signe Le voleur d'enfants, sorte de conte fantastique adapté de l'oeuvre du poète surréaliste Jules Supervielle. Remarqué à sa sortie en raison de ses prestigieux interprètes (Marcello Mastroianni, Angela Molina, Michel Piccoli), ce film très personnel ne fait pas l'unanimité du public. Il en est de même pour Le bel été 1914 (1995) et pour Le comédien (1996).
Autres activités
Entre 1981 et 1988, Christian de Chalonge travaille pour la télévision. Il réalise, entre autres, le téléfilm d'inspiration surréaliste Les cadavres exquis boiront le vin nouveau (1984) ainsi que deux épisodes de la série Inspecteur Lavardin avec l'acteur Jean Poiret.
