Ted Petok (1)

Ted Petok ( April 4, 1917 , Detroit , Ohio , April 20, 2010 ) was an American cartoonist, illustrator, animator and filmmaker.

Life
Petok attended an art college in Chicago after graduation in 1934, but stayed there for only six months, then worked as a cartoonist for various New York newspapers. As early as 1935, he returned to Detroit, where he worked as a commercial artist at a local advertising firm. After the end of the Second World War - from 1942 to 1946 he was at the US Army Signal Corps and had the highest rank of a captain - opened Petok in Detroit a studio for advertising graphics and specialized in animated advertising.

Petok soon turned to the animation and initially worked at Earl Kleins Animation Studio, Inc. and eventually came to Ernest Pintoff's Pintoff Studios. In 1969, Petok founded his own animation studio Ted Petok Studios, which he renamed in Crunch Bird Studios in 1971. He concentrated on traditionally hand-drawn animation and produced not only advertising films, but also humorous short tricks. Together with Len Maxwell (synchronization) and Joe Petrovich (animation), the three-minute cartoon film The Crunchbird, which Petok as a producer at the advice of a Kinobetreiber from Detroit in the Oscar contest. The film won the award in the category Best Animated Short Film . In 1975 Crunchbird II was a continuation; In 1981 numerous other short films were released around the Crunchbird.

Petok produced and animated over two dozen animation films, created animations for Sesame Street and The Electric Company and numerous commercials. In 1989, the Crunchbird Studios handed over to his eldest son. Petok died of heart failure in 2010 and was buried at the Beth El Memorial Park in Livonia , Michigan. wiki
