Humphrey Jennings (19 de agosto de 1907 - 24 de septiembre de 1950) fue un documentalista inglés y uno de los fundadores de la organización Mass Observation. Jennings fue descrito por el crítico de cine y director Lindsay Anderson en 1954 como: "el único verdadero poeta que el cine británico ha producido hasta ahora".
Primeros años de vida y carrera
Nacido en Walberswick, Suffolk, Jennings era hijo de Guild Socialists, un padre arquitecto y una madre pintora. Fue educado en la Escuela Perse y luego leyó inglés en Pembroke College, Cambridge. Cuando no estaba estudiando, pintó y creó diseños de escenarios avanzados y fue el fundador y editor de Experiment en colaboración con William Empson y Jacob Bronowski.
Después de abandonar lo que parecía ser una carrera académica exitosa, Jennings llevó a cabo una serie de trabajos que incluyen fotógrafo, pintor y diseñador de teatro. Se unió a la Unidad de Cine GPO, luego bajo John Grierson, en 1934, en gran parte se piensa porque Jennings necesitaba los ingresos después del nacimiento de su primera hija, en lugar de un gran interés en el cine. Las relaciones con sus colegas fueron difíciles; lo vieron como algo diletante, pero se formó una amistad con Alberto Cavalcanti.
En 1936, Jennings ayudó con la organización de la Exposición Surrealista de 1936 en Londres, en asociación con André Breton, Roland Penrose y Herbert Read.
En 1938, editó un número del London Bulletin que incluía una "colección de textos sobre el impacto de la máquina" y utilizó este material para preparar una serie de conversaciones con mineros en el valle de Swansea mientras realizaba The Silent Village. Esto lo llevó a agregar más material y obtuvo un contrato de Routledge para prepararlo para su publicación como libro; trabajó en él a intervalos y pensó que estaba casi listo justo antes de su muerte. Su hija, Mary-Louise, le pidió a Charles Madge que la ayudara finalmente a editarla para su publicación en 1985 como Pandaemonium, 1660-1886: La Venida de la Máquina según lo Observan los Observadores Contemporáneos. El libro fue citado por el escritor Frank Cottrell Boyce como una influencia en la Ceremonia de apertura de los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres 2012.
Los años de la guerra
La Unidad de Cine GPO se convirtió en la Unidad de Cine Corona en 1940, una rama de propaganda cinematográfica del Ministerio de Información, y Jennings se unió a la nueva organización.
Jennings dirge su único largometraje, los Fuegos Empezados (1943) de 70 minutos, también conocido como I Was A Fireman, detalla el trabajo del Auxiliary Fire Service en Londres. Desdibuja las líneas entre la ficción y el documental porque las escenas son reconstrucciones. Esta película, que utiliza técnicas como el montaje, se considera uno de los clásicos del género.
Sus películas son, por lo demás, cortas, incluso patrióticas en sentimiento y muy británicas en su sensibilidad, como: Spare Time (1939), London Can Take It! (1940), Words for Battle (1941), A Diary for Timothy (con una narración escrita por EM Forster, 1945), The Dim Little Island (1948) y Family Portrait (su última película completa, que habla del Festival of Britain, 1950).
