Hugh Munro Neely Hugh Munro Neely, filmmaker, historian, theater director, and musician, grew up in Santa Monica, and is a second generation native of California. He is President of the Institute for Film Education, a Culver City-based non-profit devoted to advancing knowledge of film history.
His company, Timeline Films LLC, has produced documentary films on silent film stars and directors. For Timeline he has directed original films on the lives of Mary Pickford, Louise Brooks, Clara Bow, Marion Davies and Theda Bara.
His films have premiered at the Museum of Modern Art (NYC), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Le Giornate del Cinema Muto in Italy. As a historian/archivist, he has participated in the re-discovery and preservation of silent feature films such as Her Wild Oat (1927, with Colleen Moore), Good References (1920, with Constance Talmadge), and Ramona (1928, with Dolores del Rio).
As a musician, he has guest conducted the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the National Philharmonic, and others ensembles in live performances for “silent” films. He is currently producing a documentary film on the life of choreographer Jack Cole, and writing a biography of Czech/American filmmaker Hugo Haas. fandor.com
