Engines are the hearts of airplanes. Before the age of powered flight, variations of balloons and gliders challenged the sky and scored some victories. With the introduction of power plants, aircraft became more obedient to the human beings who manipulated those engines than to the meteorological whims of the wind.

Air power has been at the cutting edge of 20th-century war. Its story is most often told from a triumphalist perspective. Van Creveld, professor emeritus of history at Hebrew University, Jerusalem, acknowledges air power's past glory with his usual blend of perception and panache. He then tells the rest of the story-the part air power enthusiasts neglect. Even in its heyday, air power's achievements were limited: armies and navies did not disappear. For more than half a century, air power's operational effectiveness has been limited by thermonuclear weapons at one end of the spectrum and low-intensity conflict at the other. Air forces are whipsawed between the growing demand of publics and governments that war be waged with minimal casualties, and a limited number of targets. But as the cost and complexity of aircraft metastasize, they are no longer expendable assets. Yet the very cultures of air forces are eroding, as pilots become increasingly passive aboard their computer-directed, ground-controlled aircraft rather than flying them. Van Creveld's suggestion that helicopters and drones represent air power's future is extreme, but cannot be dismissed as a flight of fancy.

Every student who pursues the golden wings of Naval Aviation enters the gates of the flight training command with fair measures of trepidation and joyful anticipation. Fear of failure runs in tandem with visions of adventure ahead. There is virtually no way to avoid an encounter with these emotions. Even the most stout of heart or those with lots of flight time beforehand get caught up in them.

At the start of the twentieth century the United States led the world in advances in aviation, with the first successful engine-powered flights at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and Dayton, Ohio, beginning in 1903. Fifteen years later, however, American airmen flew European-designed aircraft because American planes were woefully inadequate for service on the Western Front. Why was the United States so poorly prepared to engage in aerial combat in World War I?

Tidily arranged but not fastidious, this instructional volume educates readers on every aspect of home organization, from basics helpful for even the most inveterate pack rats to minutiae sure to delight hardcore neatniks. The author of The New City Home devotes chapters to every room in the house and begins each with big-picture concepts such as furniture placement and storage, and then moves to small but important details ("when hanging pictures on a wall, line them up along their top edges rather than the bottom of the frames"), finally tackling over-the-top fine points, such as the suggestion "to keep plates from scratching one another, slip a circle of chamois or flannel between each stacked dish." While there is some practical discussion of eliminating excess and getting "rid of one old item for every new one you acquire," the book takes the realistic approach that we all have lots of stuff and need places to put it—and so it gives more suggestions for what to do with the things you have than how to get rid of them completely. Color photos on every page—which could be more modern—demonstrate ideas with aspirational vignettes not impossible to emulate.

Formed out of an amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service on 1 April 1918, the Royal Air Force is the world's oldest independent Air Arm, and the camouflage and markings carried by its aircraft have proved to be amongst the most fascinating aspects of its subsequent history. This title covers the 'forgotten' immediate post-World War Two period, and deals with the fascinating changes from the wartime colour schemes and markings, into the post-war National markings, painted Aluminium finishes, and re-introduction of underwing serials. Thirty-six pages of full colour, three- and four-views, and profile illustrations, and scores of photographs - many from private collections. An ideal reference for modellers and aviation enthusiasts alike.

The book follows the format of previous books in the series. There are 5 brief chapters describing the design, development, and service history of the Meteor. One of the chapters, by Rudy Binnemans, details the Meteor in Belgian service. This is an interesting way to work in research by others that this series uses often. Then there are 8 pages of very well done color profiles, 5 per page. Plastic model kit reviews follow. There is then a very useful section describing the differences between the various Meteor models. Then there are 17 pages reproduced from contemporary technical manuals detailing various Meteor features. Then there are 5 pages of artwork detailing the cockpits of the various Meteor marks, 14 pages up close color photos of preserved Meteors. Particularly interesting was some detailed shots of the experimental prone pilot cockpit. The last chapter describes the camouflage and markings carried by the Meteor throughout its career with the RAF and other air arms. Outstanding in this chapter is the 2 page spread of RAF squadron markings which made a comeback in the 1950s. The book finishes with a number of very useful appendices. They include for the modeller lists of kits, accessories, and decals. For the general enthusiast there are appendices with specifications of the various Meteor variants, the Meteor family tree, foreign operators, production details, service squadrons, and an extensive bibliography. In the rear there are 8 pages with Meteor lines drawings to 1/72nd scale.

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 (Russian: Микоян и Гуревич МиГ-15) was a jet fighter developed for the USSR by Artem Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurevich. The MiG-15 also known as the Faggot was one of the first successful swept-wing jet fighters, and it achieved fame in the skies over Korea, where early in the war, it outclassed all straight-winged enemy fighters in daylight. The MiG-15 also served as the starting point for development of the more advanced MiG-17 which was still an effective threat to supersonic American fighters over North Vietnam in the 1960s. The MiG-15 is believed to have been the most widely produced jet aircraft ever made, with over 12,000 built. Licensed foreign production perhaps raised the total to over 18,000. The MiG-15 is often mentioned along with the North American F-86 Sabre in lists of the best fighter aircraft of the Korean War and in comparison with fighters of other eras.
