As one of the major symbols of German suffering, the Allied bombing war left a strong imprint on German society. To a much wider extent than is often claimed, the Allied bombings became part of German debates on the Second World War. In both the GDR as well as the Federal Republic before and after 1990 the air war became a topic of public and political interest as well as the subject of many historical accounts. Bas von Benda-Beckmann analyzes the German historiography of the Allied bombings since 1945. He explores how German historical accounts reflected debates on post-war German identity, and whether the history of the air war formed a "counter-narrative" against the idea that the Germans as a collective were guilty of the Nazi crimes.

Mark has illustrated several books in both the Aces and Combat Aircraft series.

The B-24's use as a strategic and combat weapon is vividly described. The photos are outstanding. This large, 60 page paperback will appeal to readers of all ages.

Książka opisuje jeden z najciekawszych samolotów biorących udział w Bitwie o Anglię – Boulton Paul Defiant. Publikacja jest typową dla żółtej serii Mushroom Model Publications – krótka historia rozwoju i mnóstwo ilustracji przeznaczonych dla modelarzy. Miłośnicy biurokracji także nie poczują się zawiedzeni, gdyż autor zamieścił zestawienia numerów seryjnych przedzielonych kolejnym wersjom Defiantów.
Tekst

Tekst jest napisany prostym językiem, w którym nie stosowano skomplikowanych zwrotów. Dzięki temu powinien być zrozumiały nawet dla osób, które angielszczyznę znają z filmów. To niewątpliwy plus publikacji MMP, bo dzięki temu czytelnicy oswajają się z publikacjami w językach obcych.
Jakość edytorska

Jak zwykle jakość publikacji MMP stoi na wysokim poziomie. Świetny papier, zszywane strony, brak przesunięć kolorów – lektura to czysta przyjemność.
Plany, zdjęcia i profile

Plany rozrysowano w skali 1/72. Jak zwykle można znaleźć rzuty 3D i rysunki wersji rozwojowych plus szczegóły wersji specjalistycznych.
Zdjęcia kolorowe, a jest ich tutaj grubo ponad setka, pokazują mnóstwo szczegółów konstrukcyjnych. Dzięki nim zrobienie poprawnego polskiego Defianta nie powinno być już tak trudne, jak w czasach TBiU.
Profile barwne nie są aż tak jednostajne, jak mogłoby się wydawać. Nawet najbardziej wymagający znajdą odpowiednie malowanie dla swojego modelu.
Polonica

Mała liczba dobrych zdjęć i krótki okres eksploatacji nie pozwoliły na obszerny opis polskich Defiantów. W książce znajdziemy cztery zdjęcia oraz profile trzech maszyn (jedna w rzucie 3D). Mimo to odczuwam pewien niedosyt, gdyż w tekście o 307 Dywizjonie wspomniano chyba tylko raz.
Podsumowanie

Świetna i bardzo potrzebna książka o mało popularnym samolocie. Pierwsze omówienie pod kątem modelarskim mniej znanych wersji Defianta, jak holownik celów czy maszyna ratownictwa morskiego. Dla miłośników RAF oraz lotnictwa polskiego pozycja obowiązkowa.
Wady książki? O niedosycie informacji o 307 Dywizjonie już napisałem. Drugą wadą jest brak omówienia modeli Defianta. To nie powinno być trudne, bo w skali 1/72 można policzyć je na palcach jednej ręki. Nie są to jednak wady, które zmniejszałyby wartość całej książki. Polecam ją z czystym sumieniem i mam nadzieję, że zaowocuje ona także modelami najmniej znanych wersji.

The Boulton-Paul Defiant was the outcome of the Turret-Fighter concept put forward by the RAF in the 30s. Based on the success of performance of the Hurricane and Spitfire monoplane fighters, the Air Ministry called for a fighter of clean design to be equipped with a power operated turret in the rear, where all the armament would be concentrated in. Despite the weight limitations of the turret, the fighter will have comparable performance characteristics of the latest monoplane fighters.

The accepted fighter in this specification was the Boulton-Paul Defiant. The Boulton and Paul Aircraft Company designed and flew the first prototype K8310 on 11th Aug 1937. The first production Aircraft, the Mk1 powered by the 1,030hp Rolls Royce Merlin III engine, entered RAF AEE trials in 1939.

Squadron induction followed and the type saw action during the Dunkirk evacuation and the Battle of Britain. It was not a successful day fighter and its role was soon relegated to that of a Night fighter in the latter days of 1940. In this role it carried the Airborne Interception radar AI Mk IV, which had a maximum detection range of four miles. The Defiant Mk.II followed after installation of a new 1,260hp Merlin XX engine, which gave it more power and better top speed performance.

After Beaufighters took over the role of Airborne Interception, the Defiant II got a new lease of life as a High Speed Gunnery Trainer. The Turret was removed and the rear fuselage modified with a Target stowage box fitted underneath and the fixing of the target towing equipment. A wind driven winch was placed on the starboard side, and a simple canopy now covered the winch operator, who sat in the place of the earlier air gunner.

This Mk.II based aircraft was re-designated the TT.Mk I (TT.1), and about a 140 of these were built. A number of the older Merlin III powered Mk1s were converted to Target Tug configuration and were redesignated as TT. Mk III aircraft. The last of the TT.Is were delivered in March 43.

The turret fighter was predicted by many before World War II to be the only effective way of dealing with the new threat of the heavy bomber. In the event, a two-man fighter with its armament concentrated in a power-operated turret did not turn out to be the answer. The Boulton Paul Defiant and the Blackburn Roc were only two examples of the concept to enter service and only the Defiant was able to claim any success in combat. From the archives of Boulton Paul Aircraft, the company which built every single Defiant and Roc, come a host of photographs and testaments to the Defiant from those who built them and those who flew them.
