Following the termination of the "modell magazin" Fo-to Archiv series, of which nine volumes appeared, and the fresh start with FLUGZEUG, I have often been asked whether this popular series could be recontinued. My answer has always been the same, "It will be continued!"
The first volume of the new series is duly presented herewith. It contains exactly 176 historic aircraft photos ranging from World War I to Bundeswehr machines of the mid-sixties nearly all of which are already out of service and thus veterans in their own right.
In this volume you will also find a considerable number of photographs which I originally presented in the one and only issue of PM-Foto-Revue in 1974. Due to the fact that the publishing company folded shortly after publication, the appearance of this 64-page magazine was almost completely "in camera". Now the readers who then made their valuable contributions available for publication have a chance to see the gems from their collections enlarged and in print.
The great majority of the photos remain hitherto unpublished and should provide a new untapped source of information for collector and archive alike as well as offering the modeller new impetus in terms of new camouflage schemes and conversion work.
With the commencement of this series another step has been taken towards preserving irreplaceable photographs documenting the historical and technical development of aviation for future generations. In the hope that this first volume in its new form will meet with your approval, may I also thank all those readers who have contributed to it.

The Archiv series provides documentation of German aviation history to collectors, modelers, and archivists that has gone largely untapped on this side of the Atlantic. Each of the nine volumes is a collection of previously unpublished photographs from private archivists. In Volume Four, previously unpublished photos document German aviation history and Axis aircraft.

The fact that our readers always eagerly await the next edition of FLUGZEUG is something we read again and again in their letters. Now it seems as if this "can't wait to see the next one" phenomenon has spread to Foto Ar-chiv too. Not wishing to disappoint, we took the hint and speeded things up in order to get the next edition to you as quickly as possible.
The well proven order in which the photos appear has been maintained. First come those dating back to WWI, followed by those of the interwar period up to 1935 which mainly deal with civil aircraft. The third component comprises the Luftwaffe's build-up phase and WWII itself. WWII aircraft appear in the following sequence: trainers, fighters, heavy fighters, dive bombers and ground attack aircraft, bombers, reconnaissance aircraft, transport and communications machines, seaplanes and flying boats, captured and foreign types. The fourth part includes the early days of the new German Air Force and interesting civil aircraft of the immediate post-war aera.
Finally, and in this volume for the very first time, our much awaited "Readers' Column". Its contents provide a wealth of new information about the photos in our first volume. Just how much some of our readers know about individual aircraft and units never ceases to surprise us. Wishing you enjoyable reading.

In this account of his first twenty-five years as a naval aviator, Engen vividly recalls the slow start, heroics, and hardships of the golden age of jet airplane development. Flying from bases and carriers throughout the world, Engen and his fellow pilots achieved new heights, speeds, and distances in death-defying tests that epitomized a period of exhilarating experimentation.

The Davis-Monthan Air Base is located in the hot, dry Arizona desert and is now home for over 2,500 aircraft. The United States Air Force, Army and Navy all send their surplus and obsolete aircraft here. The aircraft types here are many and varied. Each aircraft carries the livery denoting its role prior to retirement and for the enthusiast, squadron markings are still clearly visible.

The Yakovlev design bureau started life in 1927 when Aleksandr Sergeyevich Yakovlev (1894-1977) brought out his first aircraft, the two-seat AIR-1. The first nine designs created by Yakovlev remained in prototype form, being developed largely at his own initiative; in 1935, however, his fortune changed when the UT-2 primary trainer entered large-scale production. In the immediate pre-war years and during World War Two the Yakovlev OKB proved quite versatile, developing such varied aircraft as the Yak-4 light bomber of 1939, the Yak-6 light transport and the Yak-1 fighter of 1940. The latter was the progenitor of a highly successful series of fighters including the Yak-7, Yak-9 and Yak-3. After the war, diversity continued. For a while, fighters were still strongly on the agenda; the Yak-15 first flew on 24th April 1946, the same day as the MiG-9, and evolved into the Yak-17 and Yak-23 featuring the same 'pod-and-boom' layout. The twinengined Yak-25 interceptor was brought out in 1952, again becoming the first in a line of twinjet tactical aircraft - mostly bombers and reconnaissance aircraft. Civil aircraft development also continued on a large scale, the OKB developing such successful aircraft as the Yak-18 trainer/aerobatic aircraft family, the Yak-40 feederliner (1966) and the Yak-42 short/medium-haul airliner (1974). The company even tried its hand at helicopters: the tandem-rotor Yak-24 was brought out in 1952, entering small-scale production in 1955. Though overshadowed as a 'fighter maker' by Mikoyan and Sukhoi, the Yakovlev OKB did not give up. The Yak-38 VTOL attack aircraft first flew in 1970, entering service with the Soviet Navy in 1976. A major success was achieved in 2002 when the Yak-130, the company's latest trainer, was selected by the Russian Air Force.

This completes a trilogy that covers the design and development of British fighters and bombers basically from the end of the biplane to the present day. This new volume will again place the emphasis on unbuilt designs that competed with those that flew and it covers the aircraft influenced by World War 2 - projects that were prepared from the mid-1930s in the knowledge that war was coming through to some which appeared after the war was over. The latter will include early jets such as the Attacker, Sea Hawk and Venom which all flew post-war but to wartime or just post-war requirements. In-between will be found fixed gun fighters, turret fighters, twin engine cannon fighters, light, medium and heavy bombers, torpedo bombers and flying boats. The treatment given will match the earlier volumes with detailed descriptions and data and numerous photographs of models or impressions by artist's showing how these designs would have looked. Unlike the post-war years, many unbuilt projects have been lost in time but a great number did manage to survive and these will form the most complete record yet to be published.

Precision weapons and rapid targeting information mean little if aircraft are unable to survive engagements with enemy air defenses. In addition to costing the lives of pilots, high levels of attrition can ultimately affect the outcome of the theater campaign. One of the most critical factors in determining the success of an air operation is survivabiilty.

After devoting much of its efforts to winning many of the Schneider Trophy Races, AerMacchi and it's chief designer Mario Castoldi produced their first monoplane fighter, the C.200. With finger light handling and its unique wing design, the C.200 was an extremly maneuverability aicraft with good speed. The MC.200 was consistently able to get on the tail of Hurricanes, P-40's and early Spitfires.
This high-quality series of monographs is exclusively devoted to Italian WW2 aircraft. The series is edited by Giorgio Apostolo, the best known and most respected Italian Aviation Historian and the author of several authoritative texts. The volumes contain text in both English and Italian and contain the history of each aircraft and a technical description of the planes. Each book is lavishly illustrated with drawings from original instruction manuals and never before seen photos. Technical drawings ( 6-views ) are provided in both 1/72 and 1/48 scales; colour profiles, views and cockpit interiors are also provided.
