English/Japanese

The F6F-5 now on display at the New England Air Museum was originally delivered to the Navy on April 3, 1945. During the next few months, the aircraft served with three stateside fighter squadrons and finally VBF-11 at NAAS Santa Rosa, CA, where it saw the end of the war. It's current markings are believed to be those in which it served with this unit in the summer of 1945. Following the war, this Hellcat was rotated among a number of units for nearly 11 years, accumulating 1,549 hours of flight time. In the mid-1950s, it was converted to the F6F-5K target drone configuration. Before it could meet a fiery end in this role, however, it was heavily damaged in a wheels-up landing at China Lake in 1956. It was placed in storage there, upside down in a cradle, until 1973. During those years, it was stripped of virtually all its internal equipment and some control surfaces.

Germany's jack-of-all-trades wonderplane gets the Aero Detail treatment. Only two Ju88's exist in the world in anything resembling their original condition (U.S. Air Force Museum and R.A.F. Museum), and both are covered with 375 full-color detail photos. In addition, a Ju88 being restored in Norway is also covered, though it is in pieces (these photos are actually quite revealing!). As usual, complete technical illustrations and historical photos cover all variations of the plane, especially structural components that photos cannot show. A dozen marking examples, too. All captions and commentary in English and Japanese. 26cm x 25.5cm format. Soft-cover w/dust jacket. 96 pages.

It's actually been a few years since I looked at a kit catalogue from one of the major manufacturers but I've seen the new Airfix one for 2010.

The first thing to say is how many memories came flooding back to me as I looked through to see so much of their original box art which had attracted me so well as a youngster, when I first started building models. It provoked many happy memories of simply enjoying the modelling, though I know now I'd be saddened at how awful my skills were then. Still, it was a time that I enjoyed.

Apart from disappearing down memory lane, there is lots to see with their plans for this coming year, and I think it's great to see the investment Hornby are making in the range since they took it over. All the new box art is eye catching and attractive, and we are seeing new tooled models just as much as re-released older ones. I photographed a few pages from the catalogue just to illustrate a some particular points I thought might interest readers.

For aircraft fans there is a wide variety of new ones coming out, but the 2 stars for me have to be the 1/24 Mosquito - which is quite stunning by the way, but more of that later- and a 1/72 Valiant, the third and last of the old V-bombers to make it into a kit. I'm sure others will have their favourites, but they are just the 2 that take my fancy.

In this aggressively revisionist volume, Gian Gentile examines afresh this influential document to reveal how it reflected to its very foundation the American conceptual approach to strategic bombing. In the process, he exposes the survey as largely tautological and thereby throwing into question many of the central tenets of American air power philosophy and strategy.

In the wake of World War II, Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson and President Harry S. Truman established the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey, to determine exactly how effectively strategic air power had been applied in the European theater and in the Pacific. The final study, consisting of over 330 separate reports and annexes, was staggering in its size and emphatic in its conclusions.
As such it has for decades been used as an objective primary source and a guiding text, a veritable Bible for historians of air power.

With a detailed chapter on the Gulf War and the resulting Gulf War Air Power Survey, and a concluding chapter on the lessons of the Kosovo air war, How Effective is Strategic Bombing? is the most comprehensive and important book on air power strategy in decades.

• A gripping account of the death throes of the Luftwaffe
• Describes all Luftwaffe operations between May 1944 and May 1945
• Includes numerous first-hand accounts by Luftwaffe personnel
The Last Year of the Luftwaffe is the classic story of a once allconquering force struggling to stave off an inevitable and total defeat. This superbly written book gives, for the very first time, a complete account of Luftwaffe operations — including the Bodenplatte offensive, over the Ardennes in December 1944 — during the last twelve months of World War II.
Dr Alfred Price examines the state of the German airforce from May 1944 to May 1945, analysing the forces available to the Luftwaffe and the likely potential and impact of new aircraft and weapons systems, as well as assessing the Luftwaffe High Command's performance and the effect of Allied operations. In so doing, he rejects a number of long-standing myths, clarifies the impact of the jet and rocket fighters and conclusively demonstrates that the Luftwaffe performed as well as could be expected under the harsh circumstances of fighting a losing war.
The Last Year of the Luftwaffe is a comprehensive examination of Hitler's airforce, a frank and illuminating look at a crucial year of aerial combat and a fresh analysis of the odds stacked against Germany's daring pilots.
Dr Alfred Price served as an aircrew officer in the RAF, specialising in air fighting tactics. For many years a full-time historian, he has written numerous books on aviation subjects, including The Luftwaffe Data Hook, Battle over the Reich and Battle of Britain Day.

Pakiet został sprawnie przejęty przez służby pokładowe i natychmiast dostarczony admirałowi Wiliamowi Halseyowi, zaś porucznik Wiseman zwiększył obroty i powrócił do patrolowania wyznaczonego obszaru.

The RAF’s most successful heavy bomber of World War 2, the Avro Lancaster formed the backbone of Bomber Command during the large-scale night bombing campaign against occupied Europe. In this, the first of two volumes on the British bomber icon of World War 2, noted English aviation historian Jon Lake recounts the early daylight raids, the first ‘thousand bomber’ raids on Germany and the epic ‘Dambusters’ mission of 16/17 May 1943 by No 617 Sqn, as well as myriad other sorties to numerous German targets in 1942-43. This volume contains more than 100 photographs, 30 all-new colour profiles by leading aviation artist Chris Davey and specially commissioned scale drawings of the Lancaster B I/II by Mark Styling.

The B-24 Liberator was the workhorse heavy bomber of the 15th Air Force. The 5th Bomb Wing flew the B-17, but all other wings flew the Liberator. This compact Osprey Series book details the organizational development of the 15th AF, and presents an excellent discussion of bombing missions and targets. Flight characteristics of the Liberator as well as combat flying are presented in the form of first person narratives which are skillfully interwoven into the text. The result is an interesting read from both a historical and human interest perspective. B-24 devotees, 15th Air Force history buffs, and modelers seeking accurate color plates will all find this book rewarding. In the interest of full disclosure, this reviewer is favorably prejudiced toward Robert Dorr's book because a fatal crash described in detail on pp 55-58 involved my father. Photographs of the 3 crewmembers killed in this crash Norman Kraus, Norman Apperson, and James Hindes are available on the WWII Memorial Registry website.

The first aircraft to be purposely designed as a radar-equipped nightfigher, Northrop''s P-61 Black Widow was heavily influenced by early RAF combat experience with radar-equipped aircraft in 1940/41. Built essentially around the bulky Radiation Laboratory SCR-720 radar, which was mounted in the aircraft''s nose, the P-61 proved to be the largest fighter ever produced for frontline service by the USAAF. Twin-engined and twin-boomed, the Black Widow was armed with a dorsal barbette of four 0.50-in Browning machine guns and two ventrally-mounted 20 mm cannon. This volume features all the frontline users of the mighty P-61, and includes many first-hand accounts from pilots and gunners who saw action in the Pacific, Mediterranean and Western Europe.

The cranked-winged Ju 87 Stuka dive-bomber symbolized the might of Nazi Germany in the early years of World War II. Although vulnerable to enemy fighters due to its modest speed and lack of manoeuvrability, it nevertheless took a heavy toll of the Allied forces in Western Europe. This volume covers the story of Junkers' quintessential dive-bomber in operational service from its early days within the Legion Condor to its less than successful missions against Britain in the summer of 1940. The book features first hand combat accounts from Stuka crews of the period, explaining the training and tactics employed, as well as describing just what the JU 87 was like to fly. Full unit organizational strengths are also included in appendices.
