Historians generally agree that the birth of American air power occurred in the two decades between the world wars, when airmen in the U. S. Army and Navy forged the aircraft, the organization, the cadre of leadership, and the doctrines that formed a foundation for the country to win the air war in World War II. Nearly every scholarly study of this era focuses on these developments, or upon the aircraft of the period; very few works describe precisely what the flyers were doing and how they overcame the difficulties they faced in creating air forces. In this detailed, comprehensive volume, Dr. Maurer Maurer, retired senior historian of the United States Air Force Historical Research Center, fills this void for land-based aviation.

Korea - Land of the Morning Calm. On Sunday, 25 June 1950, the morning calm was shattered by the roar of gunfire and clanking tank treads. It was the beginning of three years of conflict up and down the Korean Peninsula, over some of the most rugged terrain and through some of the most vicious weather in the world. On the ground the war would stalemate almost exactly where it had begun - along an imaginary border at the 38th Parallel. But in the air it was total victory for the United Nations forces, most notably the United States Fifth Air Force and naval air forces from U.S. Navy Task Force 77.

The Liberator was conceived in January 1939, when General "Hap" Arnold invited Consolidated to come up with a design superior to Boeing's Flying Fortress. The company's preliminary data was impressive enough to warrant a contract for a prototype, and the design team under Isaac Laddon went to work in earnest. Their first consideration was range, and they selected the wing designed by David Davis for its great efficiency; the wings were shoulder mounted, allowing a capacious fuselage, and a twin rudder and fin assembly was chosen. The aircraft had a tricycle undercarriage and the bomb bay was divided into front and rear compartments, with unique roller-type doors which retracted up the sides from the central keel beam.
In the first Liberator, Consolidated Model 32, there was provision for a few hand-held .30-caliber machine guns, and the gleaming prototype, dubbed XB-24 by the Air Corps, flew for the first time on December 29, 1939. By then the Air Corps had already placed an order for seven YB-24s, and thirty-six B-24As for evaluation. The French and British ordered 284 aircraft between them.

Until "Operation Desert Storm," Fairchild's A-10 Thunderbolt II, perhaps better known as the "Warthog", was the arcana of military aviation. Designed as a low-altitude, slow-moving, "Tank Killer", and Close-Air-Support (CAS) aircraft, the A-10 was the venerable Douglas A-l Skyraider updated with twin jet engines. The philosophy was essentially the same; low and slow, good loiter time, good load carrying capability and an endowment to take hits and keep going.
The AX program (Attack Experimental) of 1966 called for just those requirements. The concept was known as Close Air Support (CAS) and the program winner was the Fairchild A-10 which finally bested its competitor, the Northrop A-9. Although the Vietnam era war events gave birth to the A-10, the aircraft actually entered service years after the conflict terminated. It undoubtedly would have been a great warrior in that battle, particularly in the initial years when threats were less sophisticated.

The Grumman F4F Wildcat was an American carrier-based fighter aircraft that began service with both the United States Navy and the British Royal Navy (as the Martlet) in 1940. Although first used in combat by the British in Europe, the Wildcat was the only United States Navy or Marine fighter in World War II 1941–42 in the Pacific Theater besides the brief appearance of the F2A Buffalo. With a top speed of 318 mph (512 km/h), the Wildcat was outperformed by the more nimble 331 mph (533 km/h) Mitsubishi Zero, but its ruggedness and tactics such as the Thach Weave resulted in an air combat kill-to-loss ratio of 5.9:1 in 1942 and 6.9:1 for the entire war.

The Spanish Civil War was not just a tragedy for Spain; acting as a focus for all the different political philosophies which had simmered throughout the Thirties, it served as the proving ground for Italian, Soviet and German military theorists. It was here that the first clash between the dictators, Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin, took place, albeit by proxy. It was here that the concept of Blitzkrieg was first tried out by the German volunteers of the Legion Condor, which formed a major air component of the Spanish rebel forces. This was a revolutionary all-arms formation, self-contained and always controlled by airmen. Here the likes of Galland, Molders and Trautloft earned their spurs. Here, too, the Bf 109, He 111, Do 17 and the infamous Ju 87 had their baptism of fire. It was, in effect, the opening rounds of World War II. Using much new previously undiscovered source material, this study looks in detail at the men, machines and units which formed the Legion Condor.

Although concerned primarily wilh US Navy and Marine Corps air operations during the Korean War. this book is also meant to be both a reminder and a tribute to all who served in the Far East during the years 1950 through 1953.
All wars come at the wrong time for most people and the war in Korea was no exception. Barely had we put the Second World War behind us when we were being asked to go to the aid of a country so small that most Americans were unsure of its location. When war came to Korea on 25 June 1950. thousands of Americans were uprooted from their peaceful existence and made to cope with the situation at hand. True, not all went against their will since the draft served only the US Army. The Navy. Marine Corps, and Air Force all met the crisis with volunteers, both regular and reserve.

The roots of the F-14 tomcat, one of the most respected fighter of the last few decades, can be found in the tradition of inter-service rivalry that exists between the U.S Air Force and U.S. Navy. Until the early 1960s, the vastly different technical and mission requirements of these two branches of the military had dictated the purchase of very dissimilar aircraft typed. The first F-14 was in the air within two years - the beginning of a spectacular success story known as the Tomcat...

This book provides a concise historical survey of the various types of aircraft used by the United States Army Air Corps, Army Air Forces, and Air Force, and the Navy and Marine Corps to accomplish air attack missions since 1926. The text covers four types of fixed-wing aircraft: designated attack aircraft; light, medium, and tactical bombers; fighter-bombers; and adapted attack aircraft.

Reports on individual aircraft types include the aircraft's original military requirements, production history, and operational record, usually accompanied by photographs, illustrations, and technical specifications. Four appendices detail aircraft designations and nomenclature used throughout the military, the organizational structure of various military air units, aircraft designs that never made it into official service, and the evolution of attack aircraft weapons and tactics.

The Condor Legion was the expeditionary force of soldiers and airmen sent by Hitler to aid Francos Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War. The Germans used the war as an opportunity to develop equipment and tactics, and their force included not only instructors, but also combat units of artillery, tanks and aircraft. These units tested guns, tanks and planes and perfected techniques which were used in the 1940 Blitzkrieg. Many of officers prominent in the early campaigns of World War II won their first successes in Spain. This book details the Legion and its unique uniform and insignia.

On 27 July 1936, Adolf Hitler sent the Nationalists 26 German fighter aircraft. He also sent 30 Junkers 52s from Berlin and Stuttgart to Morocco. Over the next couple of weeks the aircraft transported over 15,000 troops to Spain. In September 1936, Lieutenant Colonel Walther Warlimont of the German General Staff arrived as the German commander and military adviser to General Francisco Franco. The following month Warlimont suggested that a German Condor Legion should be formed to fight in the Spanish Civil War. Hitler gave permission and the initial force consisted a Bomber Group of three squadrons of Ju52 bombers; a Fighter Group with three squadrons of He51 fighters; a Reconnaissance Group with two squadrons of He99 and He70 reconnaissance bombers; and a Seaplane Squadron of He59 and He60 floatplanes. A total of 19,000 Germans served in the Spanish Civil War. Of these, 298 were lost, with 173 being killed by the enemy. This included 102 aircrew, 27 fighter pilots and 21 antiaircraft crew. A large number were killed in accidents and others died of illness. The Condor Legion lost 72 aircraft to enemy action. Another 160 were lost in flying accidents. The Condor Legion returned home in 1938 and there was a big parade through Berlin to commemorate its success.

This study is one of the few books dedicated to the history of the infamous Legion Condor, the German volunteer unit that fought with pro-Franco forces during the Spanish Civil War from 1936-1939. Many of the tactics and strategies of the Luftwaffe were first formulated and used during operations in Spain. Also, various aircraft were tested and used, such as the famous Ju 87, Do 17, He 111 and Bf 109 - all stalwarts of the later Luftwaffe during World War II. Many Luftwaffe pilots received combat training in Spain; Werner Molders and Adolf Galland first earned their wings as members of the Legion Condor. Renowned Luftwaffe experts Karl Ries and Hans Ring have brought together over 480 photographs, including aerial reconnaissance photos, detailed unit insignia, and action shots. The history of the Legion Condor is discussed in great detail, including the many personalities, thorough battle analysis, and technical aspects of the weaponry. The result is a superb historical study of the early Luftwaffe. German text.

Jeden finský spisovatel přirovnal konání lidských bytostí ke kamenům hozeným do vody.

Winning a war does not always yield the results that the victorious narion had hoped for. As has already been observed by the German strategist Carl von Clausewirz, war is a direct descendant of diplomacy. If the political leaders of a nation are not up to the standards of its generals than there should be no surprise when the diplomatic exploitarion of the fruits of victor)'are disappointing. Looking back thirty years later, it looks as if the Israeli leadership lost the initiative once the 1967 Six Day War was over.
June 1967" changed the Middle East completely. Within days Israel was transformed from a small island surrounded by an ocean of hostile Arabs into a local power. On 5 June 1967 the very existence of Israel was at stake. Its borders were long and almost impossible to defend.

Through its remarkable service during the war in Southeast Asia, the Skyraider became legendary. It served with distinction in the hands of U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, and South Vietnamese Air Force pilots, who took the war to the enemy, often at low altitude and in the face of devastating antiaircraft fire. And it suffered heavy losses. The Skyraiders versatility and the mettle of its pilots were unmatched. This book takes not only a look at an old airplane, but at the warriors who flew and maintained the machine they called the Spad. This volume captures the essence of combat in the Spad, and explains the broad range of Spad operations. The text, which is rich with the narratives of Spad pilots and ground crew, is complemented by over 300 original photographs, seventy emblems, and detailed listings of every Skyraider that flew in the war, and the colorful units to which they were assigned. This fascinating volume is a must for aviation enthusiasts, history buffs, and modelers alike.

The Lockheed (now Lockheed Martin) C-130 Hercules is one of the most remarkable aircraft ever built. It is remarkable for its extreme versatility, adaptability, and its as-yet-undetermined longevity.
The US Air Force (USAF) requirement called for a transport that could land on unimproved ground, be extremely rugged, be primarily for cargo transport, and have a troop-carrying capability. It would carry a load of 30,000 pounds (13,608 kg) over a range of 1500 nautical miles (1727.3 miles/2779.7 km). Boeing, Douglas, Fairchild, and Lockheed all responded to the Request for Proposals (RFP) issued on 21 April 1951. The Lockheed proposal, authored by the design team under Willis Hawkins, was accepted on 11 July 1951.
It is worth noting that contemporary high-speed passenger and cargo-carrying capabilities were embodied by the piston-engined Lockheed L-1649 Starliner (Super Constellation) and turboprop powered Lockheed L-188 Electra and Vickers Viscount airliners. Lockheed's proposed transport had a projected cruise speed of 360 mph (579.3 kmh), close to the fastest airliners then in service. It would also carry 40,000 pounds (18,144 kg) of cargo in a fully pressurized cargo compartment. Remarkably, this concept swiftly became a production reality.
The USAF Production Contract for 219 C-130As was issued on 19 September 1952. Lockheed planned to assemble the Hercules at their Marietta, Georgia factory and a full size wooden mockup of the production aircraft was shipped from Burbank, California to Georgia. The first of two prototype YC-130s (53-3396) rolled out of Lockheed's Burbank factory in August of 1954. Stan Bcltz and Roy Wimmer flew the second prototype (53-3397) on the type's first flight on 23 August 1954. The first production Hercules (53-3129) rolled out of the Marietta plant on 10 March 1955 and first flew on 7 April 1955. It was delivered to the 463rd Troop Carrier Wing at Ardmorc Air Force Base (AFB), Oklahoma on 9 December 1955.
