Russian Cinema provides a lively and informative exploration of the film genres that developed during Russia's tumultuous history, with discussion of the work of Eisenstein, Pudovkin, Mikhalkov, Paradzhanov, Sokurov and others.
The background section assesses the contribution of visual art and music, especially the work of the composers Shostakovich and Prokofev, to Russian cinema.

Subsequent chapters explore a variety of topics:

The literary space - the cinematic rendering of the literary text, from 'Sovietized' versions to bolder and more innovative interpretations, as well as adaptations of foreign classics
The Russian film comedy looks at this perennially popular genre over the decades, from the 'domestication' of laughter under Stalin to the emergence of satire
The historical film - how history has been used in film to affirm prevailing ideological norms, from October to Taurus
Women and Russian film discusses some of the female stars of the Soviet screen (Liubov Orlova, Vera Alentova, Liudmila Gurchenko), as well as films made by male and female directors, such as Askoldov and Kira Muratova
Film and ideology shows why ideology was an essential component of Soviet films such as The Maxim Trilogy, and how it was later definitively rejected
The Russian war film looks at Civil War and Second World War films, and the post-Soviet treatment of recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Chechnya
Private life and public morality explores the evolution of melodramas about youth angst, town and village life, personal relationships, and the emergence of the dominant sub-genre of the 1990s, the gangster thriller
Autobiography, memory and identity offers a close reading of the work of Andrei Tarkovskii, Russia's greatest post-war director, whose films, including Andrei Rublev and Mirror, place him among the foremost European auteur film-makers

Russian Cinema offers a close analysis of over 300 films illustrated with representative stills throughout. As with other titles in the Inside Film series it includes comprehensive filmographies, a thorough bibliography and an annotated further reading list. The book is a jargon-free, accessible study that will be of interest to undergraduates of film studies, modern languages, Russian language and literature, as well as cineastes, film teachers and researchers.

This book explores the lives and expectations of young women in the new Russia, looking at the enormous changes that the new social and economic environment have brought.
The authors draw on the growing literature on gender and generation in the West which has arisen as a result of the recognition that the experience of youth is classed, raced and gendered and that the experience of gender is mediated by class, race, ethnicity, sexuality and age. They consider the role of the media, state and social institutions in shaping opportunities and experiences in the post-Soviet environment, focusing on the strategies employed by individual women to reforge social identities in a society in which they have been dislocated more acutely than in any other `postmodern' society.

A fresh, commanding, and thought-provoking narrative history of the competing Russian and American empires.

The American road to empire started when the first English settlers landed in Virginia. Simultaneously, the first Russians crossed the Urals and the two empires that would dominate the twentieth century were born. Empires Apart covers the history of the Americans and Russians from the Vikings to the present day. It shows the two empires developed in parallel as they expanded to the Pacific and launched wars against the nations around them. They both developed an imperial 'ideology' that was central to the way they perceived themselves.

Soon after, the ideology of the Russian Empire also changed with the advent of Communism. The key argument of this book is that these changes did not alter the core imperial values of either nation; both Russians and Americans continued to believe in their manifest destiny. Corporatist and Communist imperialism changed only the mechanics of empire. Both nations have shown that they are still willing to use military force and clandestine intrigue to enforce imperial control. Uniquely, Landers shows how the broad sweep of American history follows a consistent path from the first settlers to the present day and, by comparing this with Russia's imperial path, demonstrates the true nature of American global ambitions.

This book examines contemporary Russian nationalism as it reemerged in the wake of Gorbachev's liberalization. The first part of the book analyzes the ideology of authoritarian nationalism, as it was developed by the conservative intelligentsia. The second section examines its political impact from 1987 to the Presidential elections of 1996. The book argues that the new nationalism provided opponents of reform with an apparently novel justification for their hostility to the liberalization inaugurated by Gorbachev and erratically pursued by Yeltsin.

Examining the role of dramatized narratives in Russian television, this book stresses the ways in which the Russian government under Putin use primetime television to express a new understanding of what it means to be Russian, answering key questions of national identity for modern Russians in dealing with their recent history: ‘What really happened to us?’ and, accordingly, ‘Why?’

The book covers important issues in Russian television today, including:

* the reworking of new ‘national’ on-screen heroes
* its relationship with classic literature
* the revisionist portrayal of a romantic portrait of life in the Soviet era
* the role of thematic elements such as love, fidelity, humour and irony
* the particularly pressing problem of crime and its representation on screen as Mafia or police adventure, and its political usage by the Putin administration.

This important report looks at the policies and strategies President Putin has developed in the field of energy and at the current climate for foreign investors in the sector. Russian energy policy is at an important watershed. A substantial increase in the output of oil & gas, has led some analysts to view Russia as a reliable, alternative to global dependence on energy supplies from the Gulf. On the other hand, there are concerns that current Russian energy strategy comes closer to the Venezuelan 'energy state-capitalism' model where foreign energy companies are welcome to invest, but only on Moscow's terms and in partnership with a state-controlled national energy company. How are these strategies unfolding and what are the lessons for private sector investors?

This book is the story of a generation of Russians who sought to improve their personal lives but managed to effectively change the ways of the entire country during the decade following the abortive revolution of 1905. This happened largely beyond the administrative apparatus of the state and outside the organized, if collapsing, revolutionary movement. They formed a new social class of rural professionals: agronomists, physicians, educators, instructors, and managers of peasant cooperatives. Several tens of thousands strong by 1914, this group successfully bridged the proverbial gap between the educated elite and the 'people' by establishing an intensive dialogue with the peasants. An attempt to turn Russian imperial villagers into self-conscious economic subjects through the 'apolitical politics' of self-organization quite unexpectedly led to the creation of different versions of political nationhood by means of society's self-mobilization. These processes explain much about the events of 1917 and the outcome of the civil war.

This is a detailed study of the development of the Russian small arms industry. Humiliated in the Crimean War, Russia turned to the United States for help. Using archival sources, Bradley, author of Muzhik and Muscovite: Urbanization in Late Imperial Russia (Univ. of California Pr., 1985), describes the role of famous gunsmiths like Colt, Smith, and Wesson; they provided Russia with machinery, tools, production techniques, and even workers to build an independent arms industry. Assimilation was only partially successful; an inflexible economy hindered military modernization. A 30-page bibliography and 40 pages of footnotes testify to Bradley's meticulous research and academic style.

In the summer of 2008 an unprecedented event occurred. For the first time since 1979 the Russian military crossed national borders to attack a sovereign state. This attack followed a period of intensive and mainly negative developments in Russia’s relations with Georgia and, more significantly, in Russia’s relations with the West. What appeared to have begun in the breakaway Georgian territory of South Ossetia rapidly escalated to the most significant crisis in European security in a decade.
This war took the world by surprise. Yet over the preceding months those closely watching events in the Caucasus had been calling attention to the escalating conflict in the region. Steps taken by the Russian leadership following the Western recognition of Kosovo’s independence in February 2008, and the NATO Bucharest Summit in April brought the situation in the Caucasus to an entirely new level. In spite of a mass of readily available information on the Russian arms buildup, however, Western governments were caught off guard when simmering tensions in the Georgian conflict zones exploded into full-scale war.

Russia has undergone more seismic changes over the last 100 years than almost any other country. The 1917 Revolution, the rapid industrialization of the 1930s, the following devastation of the Second World War, and the present return to Capitalism has seen the deep impoverishment of the entire population. The key questions which Kagarlitsky addresses are how to understand these changes, and how to characterize the complex process of reform, revolution and counter-revolution. In a country with such a turbulent and violent political history, what path should development take, and what lies ahead?

Looking in detail at the nature of Russian society and politics since 1990, Kagarlitsky offers an introductory political analysis of the major political and economic developments that have taken place under President Yeltsin, and the legacy he bequeathed so unexpectedly to his successor Putin. He focuses on the role of the media in post-Soviet Russia, corporate structures and their influence on social conflict, the formation of the oligarchy and the role of the left in modern Russia.

A concise history of Russian-Jewish literature, with special attention to the prose works. Russian-Jewish literature is discussed in four periods, showing what led to the turning points (1881-82, 1897, 1917). Hetenyi demonstrates why the selected epoch (1860-1940) represents a separate strand outside both Russian and Jewish national literature. Based on the theoretical sources on the subject, the book establishes the criteria of the of dual cultural affiliation. The survey of Russian-Jewish literature presents the pitfalls of assimilation and discusses different forms of anti-Semitism. After showing the oeuvre of 17 representative authors as a whole, the book analyzes a number of characteristic novels and short stories in terms of contemporary literary studies. In spite of their merits, several of the texts discussed have not been published in the last 80 years or are still available only in 19th-century journals.

1855: the height of the Crimean War, and the siege of the Russian city of Sebastopol continues. Attempting to cut off the Russians’ supply line at the Sea of Azoff, the allies send a squadron of battleships with 15,000 soldiers onboard. To aid them, Commander Phillip Hazard and HMS Huntress are ordered to buoy a channel under the formidable shore batteries guarding the Straight of Yenikale. Forced to make some hard decisions, Hazard faces court martial afterwards and, later, the brutality of Sebastopol’s fall.

A scholarly resource accessible to a general audience, the Encyclopedia of Russian History provides more than 1,500 entries encompassing more than 1,000 years of Russian history, from the formation of Kievan Rus in the mid-ninth century to the present-day Russian Federation. A seven-member editorial board of Russian scholars headed by editor-in-chief Millar (Director of the Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies, George Washington University) oversaw topic selection. All entries are signed by one of more than 500 contributors.

Entries are arranged alphabetically. To access them, users can scan the article title list in volume 1 or use the cumulative subject index in volume 4. Bold type in the index designates main entries. Volume 1 also provides a list of article titles arranged by one of 21 general topics, such as "Agriculture," "Government," "Religion," and "Science and Technology."

Types of entries include those for people, places, events, and other subjects of historical interest. Entries on individuals include czars (Nicholas I), military leaders (Georgy Zhukov), presidents (Vladimir Putin), writers (Alexander Pushkin), and others (Yelena Bonner, Yuri Gargarin, Anna Pavlova, Grigory Potemkin, Grigory Rasputin). Examples of nonbiographical article titles include Boyar, Great Northern War, Liberal Democratic Party, Motion pictures, Ruble, Space program, Ukraine and Ukrainians, and Yalta Conference. Entry length ranges from 250 to 5,000 words. Among the longest are Cold War, Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and October Revolution. Each entry offers a list of see also references and a bibliography with citations that point to English-language materials, mostly scholarly books. Also included are journal articles and, rarely, Web sites. Some 285 black-and-white photographs accompany the text, and each volume also contains an eight-page section of color plates. For the most part, illustration quality is excellent. However, readers looking for maps, chronologies, and dynastic charts will find only a handful, all of them embedded in entries.

With 2,300 entries, the 483-page Encyclopedia of Russian History: From the Christianization of Kiev to the Break-Up of the U.S.S.R. (ABC-CLIO, 1993) is older and lacks the depth of the newer set. As a historical resource to the largest nation on Earth, the Encyclopedia of Russian History is highly recommended for most academic libraries and large public libraries.
