Presents a new conception of the Russian empire
"Eighteen articles, mainly by US, Russian, and British scholars, cover various aspects of the Russian Empire from its foundation under Peter the Great to the rule of Stalin. The Russian participants, mostly historians and political scientists, come from the two Russian capitals and various other cities. The major focus is the geographies of rule in Russia. . . . The materials are derived in large part from Russian archives, especially those in Moscow. Several good maps aid readers' comprehension. . . . Recommended." —Choice

"Russian Empire offers much valuable information on a wide range of significant issues . . . genuinely thoughtful and thought—provoking." —Dominic Lieven

"Russian Empire offers much valuable information on a wide range of significant issues . . . genuinely thoughtful and though" —provoking." —Dominic Lieven
Russian Empire offers new perspectives on the strategies of imperial rule pursued by rulers, officials, scholars, and subjects of the Russian empire. An international team of scholars explores the connections between Russia’s expansion over vast territories occupied by people of many ethnicities, religions, and political experiences and the evolution of imperial administration and vision. The fresh research reflected in this innovative volume reveals the ways in which the realities of sustaining imperial power in a multiethnic, multiconfessional, scattered, and diffuse environment inspired political imaginaries and set limits on what the state could accomplish. Taken together, these rich essays provide important new frameworks for understanding Russia’s imperial geography of power.

Jane Burbank is Professor of History and of Russian and Slavic Studies at New York University.

Mark von Hagen is Boris Bakhmeteff Professor of Russian and East European Studies and Chair of the Department of History at Columbia University.

Anatolyi Remnev is Professor at Omsk State University.

I'm a scholar in Russian Studies and recently read the first chapter of this book. I couldn't believe my eyes! Here, finally, I was seeing in print the understanding of Russian culture that I had come to after over 25 years of studying this place (I'm in Russia now). People in the past have tried to make generalizations about Russia and print them, but they always miss the mark, often by a mile. Tim McDaniel hits a bull's eye!

Of course I'm going to buy the book (from Amazon!) the minute I get back to the states, so I can finish it. I know I'm going to assign it to my students who are going to Russia on study-abroad, and that's just the beginning of what I know will be my long, long relationship with this book.

I recommend this book highly to all Russia specialists, to anyone planning on studying, working, or traveling in Russia, and to all people who want to understand this mysterious country. - Katherine Lahti (Petersburg, Russia)

This book is required reading for anyone who wants to understand Russia. It highlights elements of Russian political culture that have been present for decades--before, during, and after the Soviet period--and that are still relevant today. Although political culture as an explanatory framework has flaws in general, its power in explaining the Russian political context cannot be disputed. -- Mark Clarence Walker

This first volume of the Cambridge History of Russia covers the period from early ('Kievan') Rus' to the start of Peter the Great's reign in 1689. It surveys the development of Russia through the Mongol invasions to the expansion of the Muscovite state in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and deals with political, social, economic and cultural issues under the Riurikid and early Romanov rulers. The volume is organised on a primarily chronological basis, but a number of general themes are also addressed, including the bases of political legitimacy; law and society; the interactions of Russians and non-Russians; and the relationship of the state with the Orthodox Church. The international team of authors incorporates the latest Russian and Western scholarship and offers an authoritative new account of the formative 'pre-Petrine' period of Russian history, before the process of Europeanisation had made a significant impact on society and culture.

The second volume of The Cambridge History of Russia covers the imperial period (1689-1917). It encompasses political, economic, social, cultural, diplomatic, and military history. All the major Russian social groups have separate chapters and the volume also includes surveys on the non-Russian peoples and the government's policies towards them. It addresses themes such as women, law, the Orthodox Church, the police and the revolutionary movement. The volume's seven chapters on diplomatic and military history, and on Russia's evolution as a great power, make it the most detailed study of these issues available in English. The contributors come from the USA, UK, Russia and Germany: most are internationally recognised as leading scholars in their fields, and some emerging younger academics engaged in cutting-edge research have also been included. No other single volume in any language offers so comprehensive, expert and up-to-date an analysis of Russian history in this period.

The third volume of The Cambridge History of Russia provides an authoritative political, intellectual, social and cultural history of the trials and triumphs of Russia and the Soviet Union during the twentieth century. It encompasses not only the ethnically Russian part of the country but also the non-Russian peoples of the tsarist and Soviet multinational states and of the post-Soviet republics. Beginning with the revolutions of the early twentieth century, chapters move through the 1920s to the Stalinist 1930s, World War II, the post-Stalin years and the decline and collapse of the USSR. The contributors attempt to go beyond the divisions that marred the historiography of the USSR during the Cold War to look for new syntheses and understandings. The volume is also the first major undertaking by historians and political scientists to use the new primary and archival sources that have become available since the break-up of the USSR.

During the long and costly conflict known as the Great Northern War [1700-1721], Peter the Great and his newly formed Russian army, which was modelled on western European lines, defeated their Swedish counterparts, who were generally regarded as being the finest troops in Europe. Angus Konstam examines the development, equipment and organisation of the Russian army following the death of Peter the Great, and describes its emergence from three decades of experimentation and political involvement as a major military power during the Seven Years War. This first of two volumes covers the Russian infantry, with its companion, Men-at-Arms 298, focusing on the cavalry.

This second volume (see MAA 297) by Angus Konstam on the Russian Army of the Seven Years War concentrates on the cavalry, both the regular troops and irregular forces, considering their composition, nature and effectiveness. It also outlines the state of the Russian train of artillery, which was seen as the premier branch of the army and dominated Russian military doctrine throughout the 18th century. As a result of reforms to the, the Russians entered the war with Prussia somewhat wrong footed. The ability of the army to recover from this in the crucible of war is a major part of this story.

Often overshadowed by the drama of its catastrophic collapse in the November 1917 Revolution, the Imperial Russian Army's record in 1914-16 included some notable victories. Its human qualities of patriotism and endurance were remarkable, and in 1916 the 'Brusilov Offensive' on the South-Western Front outdistanced anything that was being achieved in France. The variety and romance of its uniforms - infantry and cavalry, Guards and Line, Cossacks, armour and Air Service crewmen, even a priest - are splendidly captured here by Russia's leading military artist; and Nik Cornish's expert text is supported by tables of insignia and many rare photographs.

Refining Russia is a pioneering study of the development of advice literature ("how-to" books such as etiquette manuals and brochures on hygiene) in Russia, and of its reception and wider cultural meaning. An absorbing and original exercise in "history of the book," it is also a major contribution to the understanding of Russia's relationship with the West, and of the cultural world inhabited by the Russian intelligentsia.

Nineteenth century Russian intellectuals perceived a Malthusian bias in Darwin's theory of evolution by means of natural selection. They identified that bias with Darwin's concept of the "struggle for existence" and his emphasis upon the evolutionary role of overpopulation and intraspecific conflict. In this book, Todes documents a historical Russian critique of Darwin's "Malthusian error", explores its relationship to such scientific work as Mechnikov's phagocytic theory, Korzhinskii's mutation theory and Kropotkin's theory of mutual aid, and finds its origins in Russia's political economy and in the very nature of its land and climate. This is the first book in English to examine in detail the scientific work of nineteenth century Russian evolutionists, and the first in any language to explore the relationship of Russian theories to the economic, political, and natural circumstances in which they were generated. It combines a broad scope (dealing with political figures and cultural movements) with a close analysis of scientific work on a range of topics.

Much of the discussion of Russia's recent post-Communist history has amounted, both in Russia and the West, to a series of monologues by strong-minded people with starkly divergent views. In contrast, Padma Desai's conversations with influential, intelligent participants and observers provide the reader with a broad, nuanced view of what has and has not happened in the last fourteen years, and why. Conversations from Russia will thus serve as a much-needed reference volume, both for academics who study Russia and for laypeople who only have vague perceptions of what has occurred in Russia since the collapse of Communism.
In conversations with important figures like Boris Yeltsin, George Soros, Anatoly Chubais, and Yegar Gaidar, Desai considers questions like why the Soviet Union fell apart under Gorbachev, what went wrong with economic reforms after Gorbachev, whether the privatization of Russian assets could have been managed differently, and what the prospects are for the Russian economy in the near future. Desai, a recognized expert in the field of Soviet studies, ties the interviews together with an introduction, ultimately reaching her own judgment on each issue considered in the conversations. This book will appeal to researchers and students in developmental economics, political economy, and Soviet studies, and educated laypeople interested in Russia

The Russo-Japanese war saw the first defeat of a major European imperialist power by an Asian country. When Japanese and Russian expansionist interests collided over Manchuria and Korea, the Tsar assumed Japan would never dare to fight. However, after years of planning, Japan launched a surprise attack on the Russian Port Arthur, on the Liaoyang Peninsula in 1904 and the war that followed saw Japan win major battles against Russia. This book explains the background and outbreak of the war, then follows the course of the fighting at Yalu River, Sha-ho, and finally Mukden, the largest battle anywhere in the world before the First World War.

The 8,000-kilometer Trans-Siberian Railway linking Ekaterinburg in the Ural Mountains with the Pacific port of Vladivostok is the world’s longest railroad. Construction began in 1891 and was completed in 1916. By 1900, much of the line was finished and open for traffic. In that year, the Russian Ministry of Ways of Communication issued, in identical English and Russian editions, this illustrated guide to the railway. It includes a history of Siberia, an account of the construction, and a detailed listing of the towns and cities along the route.

Hardback, professionally and handsomely rebound in half-leather, burgundy leather spine and cover corners over marbled paper-covered boards; spine has five raised bands, gold lettering and gold stamped decorations; new marbled-paper endpapers. Binding is like new; top page block edge gilt, other edges deckle; deckle edges a little darkened, as are extreme page margins; a few marginal finger smudges, and a few pages have been opened a little clumsily, not affecting the text or maps. All called-for folding railroad maps, folding town plans, and phototypes (full-page B & W plates) are present, along with a chromolithograph depicting the tea trade. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 520 pages

With 2 phototypes, 360 photo-gravures, 4 maps of Siberia and 3 plans of towns.

"Andrey Vavilov has done a splendid job of integrating modern macroeconomic theory with personal experience. Stunningly coherent, comprehensive and lively. It should be read by anyone who is serious about studying Russian economy." -- Oleg Viyugin, Chairman of the board of MDM Bank, former Head of the Federal Financial Markets Service (Russian Federation)

"Sovereign debt management has been a central issue in Russia's economic transformation. Andrei Vavilov provides an excellent and comprehensive account of the causes and implications of the evolution of Russian debt combining personal experience from one of the key players in managing Russian debt in 1990s with facts, data, and insights from macroeconomic theory. A must read for all interested in Russian economy." -- Sergei Guriev, Morgan Stanley Professor of Economics and the Rector of the New Economic School in Moscow

"Over the span of barely two decades Andrei Vavilov's career path has taken him from academia, to top-level government service in Russia's executive and legislative branches, to success in industry and finance on a global scale. His new book combines the insider's unique insights into policymaking with the balanced and informed judgment of the professional economist and businessman, as it presents the real story of successes and failures in Russia's attempts to create the lifeline of a vibrant market economy — a robust and modern financial system." -- Clifford G. Gaddy, Senior Fellow, the Brookings Institution, US

Rather than presenting a conventional chronology of Russian literature, Russian Literature: A Very Short Introduction explores the place and importance in Russian culture of all types of literature. How and when did a Russian national literature come into being? What shaped its creation? How have the Russians regarded their literary language? The book uses the figure of Pushkin--'the Russian Shakespeare'--as a recurring example, as his work influenced every Russian writer who came after him, whether they wrote prose or verse. It furthermore examines why Russian writers are venerated, how they've been interpreted inside Russia and beyond, and the influences of the folk tale tradition, orthodox religion, and the West.
