R.P Hunnicutt has written a series of books that mark the definitive history of American armored fighting vehicles, and serious students of the subject would be well advised to collect them all. Each encyclopedia-size volume has a thorough history of vehicle development, chapters devoted to prototypes and experimental vehicles, four view 1:48th scale drawings of all major types and subtypes, and a photo section depicting the vehicles in service. There are hundreds of detail photographs and illustrations, and the books are printed on high quality glossy paper.
This particular volume chronicles the US military's search for a true main battle tank that could replace both the medium and heavy gun tanks in service in the 1950's and early 60's. The MBT-70/XM803 project of the 1960's and early 70's is covered in detail, and finally the M1 Abrams itself, developed in the 1970's and first fielded in 1982. The book discusses the multilayered armor (nicknamed Chobham armor after the British MVEE facility that developed it) which gave the new generation of tanks their reputation for invincibility, though of course the exact composition was and is classified. It also covers the competitive trials between the General Motors and Chrysler Abrams prototypes and the German Leopard 2. The Leopard 2 was rejected for US service, but its 120 mm gun was incorporated into the US tanks beginning with the M1A1. The book went to print just as the M1A1 was being deployed to Saudi Arabia in 1990, so the history ends there, but it is still a superb reference for the Abrams.

No army since the Second World War has had as much experience or shown more skill in tank warfare than Israel's Zahal. The 1956, 1967 and 1973 wars in the Middle East provided textbook examples of superior mechanized tactics. This photographic survey is intended to provide a glimpse of the wide range of equipment used by the Israeli armoured force during these wars.
The Israeli armoured force had modest beginnings in the 1948 War of Independence. The original armoured vehicles were improvised armoured lorries cobbled together in clandestine workshops by the Haganah and other militias. Also, Israeli purchasing agents scoured old European battlefields and scrap-yards looking for military equipment that could be smuggled into Israel. A handful of old Hotchkiss tanks were found in France, and formed the original Israeli tank unit. France remained the primary supplier of armoured vehicles to Israel throughout 1956. Much of this equipment was ex-Lend Lease originally supplied by the United States, such as Sherman tanks and M3 and M5 half-tracks. Finally, before the outbreak of the 1956 war, France began to supply new armoured vehicles such as AMX-13 light tanks. Besides the French supplies, Israel also managed to scrape together additional vehicles located in European and Asian scrap-yards and renovate them in Israel. The ability of Israeli Ordnance teams to modernize and rebuild old hulks was in many ways as remarkable as the battlefield skills of the tankers.
It is difficult with hindsight to realize that the Israeli Armoured Corps was held in less than favourable light until the 1956 campaign. The 1948 war had been won by infantry and motorized infantry, and the influence of tanks was negligible. However, the brilliant success of tank units in 1956 marked a fundamental shift in Zahal, with the Armoured Force soon becoming the dominant element in the army. Indeed, Zahal is more heavily mechanized on a percentage basis than practically any other army today. Political fortunes changed in the wake of the 1956 war, with the de Gaulle government leaning more towards traditional Arab interests and ceasing to become a major arms supplier to Israel. Britain reversed its previous policy and agreed to sell Israel Centurion tanks, which was a critical step in the modernization of Zahal. But it was not until the US government, on the eve of the 1967 war, decided to permit the sale of arms to Israel that a relatively constant flow of equipment became available, continuing to this day. Nevertheless, Israel has a vigorous programme not only to modernize its older armoured vehicles, but, now with the Merkava, to build its own.
The author would like to express his thanks to Pierre Touzin, the Israeli Consulate in New York, the office of the Israeli Military Attache and Press Office of the Embassy of Israel in Washington DC, the Israeli Government Press Agency, Soltam Ltd., James Loop, George Balin and Joseph Desautels, without whose generous help in obtaining the photographs appearing here, this book would not have been possible. All photographs are from official Israeli government sources unless otherwise noted.

The 1973 Yom Kippur War had a devastating effect on the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) Armoured Corps. Israeli tanks, once invincible in battle, fell casualty, not to Egyptian and Syrian armour formations, but to infantry forces armed with anti-tank weapons such as the 'Sagger' missile and the infamous RPG. The losses suffered by IDF tanks and crews because of these weapons were severe and deeply felt in Israel, a nation incapable of accepting heavy battlefield casualties. As a result, the IDF did what it does best - it modified almost every tank and AFV on its inventory with extra armour and improved anti-tank defences, in many cases totally altering the appearance of weapons systems purchased from other countries. In addition, the Israelis developed their own indigenous MBT, the Merkava, which with its unique design traded in battlefield mobility for crew survivability.
When the TZAHAL (Hebrew acronym for IDF) invaded the Lebanon on 6 June 1982 the newly modified armour forces received their first true combat test. The specially developed applique active armoured plating applied to the M60 (Mag'ach) and Centurion (Sho't) MBTs proved highly successful against all types of anti-tank weapons used by PLO and Syrian forces. The Ml 13 APC, considered a death trap in the 1973 War because so many were destroyed, along with their entire crews, had now received armour sheet protection, and as a result it was able to reach Beirut and beyond with virtual impunity. The Merkava proved to be almighty on the battlefield. It was involved in all aspects of the Lebanese fighting and destroyed numerous Syrian tanks, including more than ten 'invincible' T-72s. Most importantly, although a few Merkavas were lost, not one of their crewmen lost his life in combat. As the war in the Lebanon dragged into a costly Israeli occupation, determined anti-Israeli guerrilla suicide attacks caused the IDF to strengthen even further the armour and anti-personnel capabilities of its combat vehicles. A heavily armoured APC was even developed from the Centurion chassis armed with numerous machine guns and grenade launchers.
Today, the IDF's Armoured Corps (Heyl Shiriori) has developed into the world's most formidable armoured combat force. Yet its roots are humble, and the respect it commands has been brought about only by the bitter clashes and heavy losses endured by the State of Israel in six major wars throughout its 38 years of independence.
The author wishes to offer his thanks to fellow IDF veteran Dan Rosenberg and to Messrs. Moshe Kastoriano, Leslie Hulkower and Yoav Efra'ati for the invaluable assistance they provided in the preparation of this book; he would also like to offer a very special word of thanks to Mr. Andreas Constantinou, whose patience, technical assistance and hard work made the book possible.

Opracowanie przedstawia historie walk jakie rozegraly sie w pierwszych miesiacach 1943 roku w rejonie Dombasu w miescie Charkow. Armii feldmarszalka Paulusa.
W walki o Charkow obie walczace strony zaangazowaly spore ilosci broni pancernej. Niewatpliwie jednostki czolgow i dzial samobieznych odegraly decydujaca role w bitwie i dlatego autor tej ksiazki postanowil poswiecic im wiecej uwagi.

"Maus", meaning mouse - that's the misleading name given to the biggest and most powerful tank of World War II. This modest little mouse weighed as much as four "Panther" or three "Tiger" tanks. Though this super heavy tank is evidence of the gigantomania of the III Reich's leadership, it is worthwhile to examine this" interesting and, for its time, extraordinary design.

The super heavy "Maus" tank and the "Sturmtiger" self-propelled (assault) gun are two armored vehicles produced during Word War II that are expressions of gigantomania and a lack of familiarity with the tactical use of armor on the battlefield.

The M4 Sherman medium tank was the mainstay of the American and British armored forces in World War II. From its introduction in 1942 until the production line closed in the second half of 1945, tens of thousands of these versatile armored fighting vehicles were produced. In addition to the basic tank, which itself went through numerous modifications during its three year production run, many more Sherman variants were produced. The M4 was adapted for use as armored artillery, self-propelled antiaircraft artillery, tank destroyers, cargo and personnel carriers, and a vast array of specialized armored combat engineer vehicles.
As a result of the vast numbers of operational M4s still in service at the end of World War II, the Sherman soldiered on around the world for decades. Indeed, the basic design was so sound and durable that the Israeli Army still had some in use in the 1973 Yom-Kippur War. Heavily modified with a modem, high velocity 75mm gun it was dubbed the Super Sherman.
This massive, heavily illustrated book is, without doubt, the definitive work on its subject.

Niniejsze opracowanie omawia dostawy sprzętu pancernego i samochodów z Wielkiej Brytanii i Kanady, część druga będzie omawiała sprzęt dostarczony przez USA. Opracowanie przybliża Czytelnikowi temat dostaw sprzętu z Wielkiej Brytanii i USA do ZSRS. Książka jest bogato ilustrowana unikalnymi fotografiami i planszami barwnymi przedstawiającymi malowanie ochronne (kamuflaż) omawianych pojazdów bojowych.

The US Army fielded no fewer than five different types of light tanks during World War II. Of these, the most important types were the M3 and M5 light tanks, better known by their British name. Stuart. The US light tanks had a troubled history in US Army wartime service, often being employed in roles for which they were not well suited. At first, they were employed in normal lank roles, both for infantry support and tank fighting. They were not effective in either role, so by the middle of the war. they were assigned to secondary missions with the primary tank roles taken over by the M4 medium lank. Light tanks were more successful in the Pacific theatre, though their importance considerably diminished by 1944.
