Nach den bisher in der Reihe „Beutepanzer unterm Balkenkreuz" erschienenen Waffen-Arsenal Bänden Nr. 116 "Russische Kampfpanzer", Nr. 121 "Französische Kampfpanzer" und Nr. 137 "Amerikanische und englische Kampfpanzer" widmet sich dieses Heft den Panzerspähwagen und anderen gepanzerten Radfahrzeugen der verschiedensten Nationen in deutschen Diensten während des 2. Weltkrieges. Teilweise werden in diesem Heft Fotos abgedruckt, die wegen der Original-Aufnahmetechnik oder der Bildquelle Unscharfen aufweisen. Wegen der Seltenheit der fotographierten Fahrzeuge wurden diese Aufnahmen trotzdem verwendet.
Der Autor ist für jede korrigierende und ergänzende Information in Wort und Bild dankbar.

Neben den Kampfpanzern und Selbstfahrlafetten entwickelten sich nach und nach das Bedürfnis nach kettengetriebenen Hilfsfahrzeugen für die verschiedenen Zwecke innerhalb der gepanzerten Truppenteile, insbesondere für deren Pionicreinheiten. Schon frühzeitig wurde die Entwicklung von derartigen Minenräumern und Brückenlegern vorangetrieben, die jedoch mit Fortschreiten des Krieges und zunehmendem Rohstoffmangel gegenüber den Kampf-fahrzeugen zurückstehen mußten und deshalb über das Stadium des Baus einer geringen Zahl von Prototypen oder gar nur der Planung und des Reißbrettes nicht hinaus gediehen. Es blieb den West-Alliierten mit ihrem Materialüberfluß vorbehalten, die Effektivität solcher Spezialpanzer, die heute zur selbstverständlichen Ausrüstung der Heere gehören, durch Einsatz in großer Stückzahl unter Beweis zu stellen.
Etwas ausdauernder beschäftigte man sich auf deutscher Seite mit dem Problem eines gepanzerten Munitionstransporters, der immerhin noch vor Kriegsende - wenn auch in geringer Stückzahl - zum Einsatz kam. Am umfangreichsten war die Produktion und Verwendung kettengetriebener und ferngesteuerter Sprengladungsträger, die in mehreren Größen und verschiedenen Ausführungen gefertigt wurden, von denen der sogenannte "Goliath" am bekanntesten war. Ihnen ist deshalb auch der Hauptteil dieses Heftes gewidmet, das zum ersten Mal diese Pionierpanzer und Spezialfahrzeuge in zusammenhängender Form behandelt. Mit aufgenommen wurden die Bergepanzer, die vor allem mit dem Einsatz der schweren und kostbaren Kampfpanzer "Tiger" und "Panther" überaus wichtige Requisiten der Instandsetzungseinheiten wurden, leider aber auch nie in ausreichender Stückzahl zur Verfügung standen.

Der Band 5 dieser Reihe ist schon seit Jahren vergriffen. Bevor jedoch an eine Neuauflage gegangen wird, sollen erst noch — nach dem Vorbild für andere Waffen — ergänzende Neuschöpfungen folgen. So sind neben dem vorliegenden auch noch weitere Bände über die deutschen schweren Panzerspähwagen in Arbeit.
Alle Fotos und Abbildungen sind - wie bei allen anderen Ergänzungsbänden auch hier - gegenüber dem Band 5 neu.

The most widely produced wheeled armored vehicle in service in the West is the Light Armored Vehicle (LAV) and Piranha. With more than 9300 vehicles produced to date, and with deliveries to 21 countries, this family of vehicles has proved hugely successful. The family was originally designed by the Swiss company MOWAG, which is now part of the General Dynamics Land Systems stable. Concord Publications' latest title in its Armor at War Mini Series covers this popular armored vehicle, which first appeared in prototype form in 1972.
The book is divided into sections covering various countries and geographic regions where the LAV/Piranha is found. It opens with Canada and includes the 6x6 AVGP before moving on to the 8x8 Bison, Coyote and LAV III. The next chapter covers the LAV in USMC service. The chapter on Australasia features the ASLAV and newer NZLAV, while Europe's Piranhas receive a chapter all to themselves. The final section covers miscellaneous countries such as Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. This book is crammed full of background information on the LAV/Piranha, and records its history and development. Details of variants, deployment and organization (plus combat/operational use where relevant) is given for each country using the vehicle.
The book features more than 160 photos showing external and internal views of these vehicles, including the latest combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. Detailed captions provide pertinent details in this book that offers a unique photographic record of an attractive and versatile vehicle found the world over.

The new Stryker Interim Armored Vehicle (IAV) of the U.S. Army has attracted a lot of attention since its introduction several years ago. While it has come in for some strong criticism from some quarters, this volume offers an objective look at this important new wheeled armored vehicle of the U.S. Army.
In Carl Schulze's inimitable style, he outlines how the Stryker fits in with the Army's Interim Brigade Combat Team philosophy. In actual fact, the Stryker is based on a tried and tested formula, with this GDLS/MOWAG vehicle already in service with countries such as Canada, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Spain and Switzerland. This volume provided an enormous amount of detail about the Stryker, and the vast majority of its pages are devoted to examining the different variants in photographs and in written descriptions. Excellent detail is provided on the standard Infantry Carrier Vehicle, Reconnaissance Vehicle, Mobile Gun System, Mortar Carrier, Command Vehicle, Fire Support Vehicle, Engineer Squad Vehicle, Medical Evacuation Vehicle, ATGM Vehicle, and NBC Reconnaissance Vehicle.
For this book, the duo of Carl Schulze and Ralph Zwilling has succeeded in collecting a tremendous range of photos. They mostly show vehicles in action operationally in Iraq, as well as on exercise in Germany. This means the slat armor system employed on Strykers deployed to Iraq gets good coverage also. For modelers or military vehicle buffs interested in this impressive new vehicle, then this authoritative book should be the first port of call!

Without a doubt, this is one of the finest WWII memoirs ever written by an American junior officer. Lieutenant Cooper served with the 3rd Armored Division's Maintenance Battalion and saw action from Normandy to Germany in 1944-1945. One of the army's two heavy armored divisions, the 3rd lost 648 M4 Shermans and had another 700 tanks damaged, repaired and put back in service by the time the shooting ended in May 1945. Cooper, as one of the division's three ordnance liaison officers, was in the midst of the division's tank recovery operations. He writes about the tenacity of the maintenance mechanics and their ability to improvise and devise their own policies. Cooper is unsparing in his criticism of George S. Patton and other generals whose belief in mobility over heavy armor kept the Sherman medium tank as the standard. American tank crews quickly learned that these "death traps" were no match for heavier German tanks such as the Panther and King Tiger. Cooper describes the difficult maneuvering in the hedgerow country, the confusion of the Battle of the Bulge, the liberation of Nordhausen concentration camp and the destruction of an entire column of tanks and other vehicles. Cooper demonstrates convincingly that it was the unheralded work of the maintenance section that allowed the 3rd Armored Division to maintain its combat effectiveness. This detailed story will become a classic of WWII history and required reading for anyone interested in armored warfare. Photos not seen by PW.

Thomas L. Jentz, Hilary L. Doyle - Germany's Panth er Tank, The Quest for Combat Supremacy (2004).jpg

I was truly in awe when I first flipped through the pages of this book. Mr. Jentz's book on the german WWII Panter tank must contain answers to every question I ever had about the tank. Included are technical details and history of every version deployed on the fronts, as well as concepts that were in design at war's end. Brief combat experiences told by allied soldiers that had confronted Panther's on the western front bring also a nice feel what it was to stare at the barrel of this metal monster.
The book contains a huge amount of photos from both inside and outside the tank. One can take a virtual tour of the Tank's turret, engine compartment and hull by skimming through the pages. Closeup images of rarer equipment, like infra-red searchlight systems highlight the book. The only downside I can imagine is that the book takes a very technical approach. If you are looking for a history combat experience, you might be disappointed.
