Die deutsche Heeresleitung - genau wie alle anderen Führungsstäbe des Auslandes - forderte aufgrund der Erfahrungen des Ersten Weltkrieges Panzerabwehrwaffen für die Infanterie. Diese neuen Geschütze oder auch Kanonen sollten innerhalb mittlerer Entfernung gute Trefferwirkungen erzielen. Dabei mußten folgende technische Probleme gemeistert werden: hohe Durchschlagsleistung der Granate (abhängig von der Anfangsgeschwindigkeit) und rasche Feuerfolge, niedrige Bauart der Geschütze, große Beweglichkeit und hohes Seitenrichtfeld des Rohres. Der Versailler Vertrag erlaubte dem Deutschen Reich die Herstellung einer solchen Waffe nicht. Lediglich der Firma Rhein-metall-Borsig AG war erlaubt, Geschütze bis zu einem Kaliber von 17 cm herzustellen. Erst nachdem 1925 die französischen Truppen das besetzte Rheinland räumten und die Alliierte Kontrollkommission sich aufzulösen begann, erfolgte im Zuge der geheimen Aufrüstung eine Produktion neuer Waffen. Die Firma Rheinmetall-Borsig AG begann noch im selben Jahr mit der Konstruktion, Entwicklung und Produktion einer 3,7 cm-Kanone, die für die Panzerabwehr gedacht war. Die Produktion lief 1928 an. Einzelteile der Kanone wurden in verschiedenen kleineren Fertigungswerkstätten hergestellt, um danach in den Montagehallen von Rheinmetall-Borsig AG zusammengesetzt zu werden. So konnten zwischen 1928 und 1933 ca. 200 Kanonen vom Kaliber 3,7 cm vom Band gehen. Die Kanone erhielt vorerst die Bezeichnung T AK (Tankabwehrkanone).

The US Army was a relative latecomer to the tank business in World War 2. The US tank force on the eve of war In Europe in 1939 was that of second-rate power; indeed the US Army had fewer tanks than armies like Italy or Poland. The neglect of the US armored force was caused by a complicated set of conditions including the economic stagnation of the Great Depression, and the tendency towards isolationism in US foreign policy. By 1940, President Franklin Roosevelt had begun to commit the US Army to a major rebuilding due to the perception that the United States would eventually be dragged into war. An important element in this effort was the considerable expansion cf the US defense industry, to supply Lend Lease needs as well as the growing US Army.
The clearest evidence of the stagnation of American tark design was the US Army's first medium tank, the dreadful M2AI medium tank which was manufactured from December 1940 through August 1941. This embarrassing design was manufactured simply because no other types were available. It is a grim curiosity that the M2A1 entered production at exactly the same time that the T-34 medium tank entered production in the Soviet Union. Although US tank design had suffered from a lack of funding, the US Ordnance Corps had wisely chosen to invest its scanty budget in tank components, such as guns, transmissions, and suspensions. So when new tanks were demanded, the Ordnance Corps could -espond reasonably quickly, as occured in 1940.

This book consists of a new series of photos of the M4 Sherman in combat with the US Army in the European Theater during World War II. The M4 Sherman was the most widely used US tank of the war, with more Shermans manufactured than all German tanks combined. This book provides more detailed coverage of some of the campaigns than the previous volume, especially new coverage of the tank fighting in Italy in 1944-45, and more in-depth coverage of the fighting along the German Siegfried line in the autumn and winter of 1944-45. The author has discovered a large number (over 95%) of new, previously unpublished photos of the M4 in combat. These photos include those buried in the archives and from private collections. The book started with the North African debut, followed by the Italian Campaign, Normandy, Alsace, Low Countries, Siegfried Line, Battle of the Bulge, and finished with the Final Offensive of 1945.

1934 entstand die militärische Forderung für einen mittleren Kampfpanzer, der als Unterstützungsbzw. Führungspanzer für die Panzer I und II geplant war. Er sollte neben einer zusätzlichen Funkausstattung mit einer panzerbrechenden Kanone ausgerüstet werden. Schon 1936 konnten die ersten Panzer III an die Truppe ausgeliefert werden. Statt der geforderten 5 cm KwK zeigten sie jedoch nur — da bereits verfügbar — eine 3,7 cm KwK. Dazu kamen drei (später nur noch zwei) MG. Seine Besatzung bestand aus fünf Soldaten.
Bei allen Panzerverbänden trat er zumeist zu den mittleren (4. bzw. 8.) und seltener als Zugführerwagen zu den leichten Kompanien. Als Befehlswagen mit zusätzlicher Funkausstattung und einer Kanonenattrappe aus Holz — um im Turm Platz für das Kartenbrett zu schaffen — war er bald in allen Stäben zu finden.
Mit keinem deutschen Panzer des Heeres ist soviel experimentiert worden wie mit dem Kampfpanzer III. Insgesamt gab es von ihm zwölf Ausführungen, davon allein neun (A bis J) mit der beschriebenen kurzen 3,7 cm, später 5 cm KwK (L/42). Vom D, E, H. I und K gab es auch Befehlswagen. Im einzelnen unterschieden sie sich:

The OA vz. 30 (Obrneny automobil vzor 30) was a Czechoslovak-designed armored car used by Nazi Germany, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary during World War II. Fifty-one were built, of which the Germans seized twenty-four when they occupied Bohemia-Moravia in March 1939 and the Slovaks captured eighteen when they declared independence from Czechoslovakia at the same time. Romania acquired nine when Czech troops sought refuge in Romania after the Hungarian invasion of Carpatho-Ukraine that same month. Slovak vehicles saw combat in the Slovak-Hungarian War, the invasion of Poland, the opening months of Operation Barbarossa and the Slovak National Uprising. Das Sturmgeschütz III, ursprünglich zur Unterstützung von Angriffen nicht-gepanzerter Infanterie vorgesehen, erwies sich spätestens 1941 beim Auftreten der russischen Kampfpanzer T 34. KW I und II, mit deren starken Panzerungen und wegen ihrer hohen Vo, weitreichenden sowie treffgenaueren (gestreckte Flugbahn der Geschosse) Langrohrkanonen, als nicht mehr ausreichend. Seine kurze 7,5 cm Sturmkanone (Stuk L/24) zeigte zwar weiterhin Wirkung gegen "weichen" und weniger beweglichen Feind, nicht jedoch mehr gegen die oben genannten russischen Panzer. Längere Kanonen mit ihren besseren Eigenschaften wurden notwendig, und es entstanden - relativ schnell -nun auch Sturmgeschütze III mit Langrohrkanonen (Stuk 40). Sie erhielten nach diesen Kanonen nun die Bezeichnung:
— Sturmgeschütz 40, Ausführung F mit der Stuk 40 L/43
— Sturmgeschütz 40, Ausführung F/8 mit der noch längeren Stuk 40 L/48
— Sturmgeschütz 40, Ausführung G mit der Stuk 40 L/48 und
— Sturmgeschütz 40, Ausführung G mit der Stuk 40 L/48 in Saukopfblende

The Last Blitzkrieg
The Great Patriotic War (as the Soviet Union called their part of the Second World War) began on 22 June 1941, when Hitler launched his battle-hardened army against an unprepared RKKA (Workers and Peasants Red Army) in Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union. Using their blitzkrieg tactics perfected in the first two years of the war, the German Panzers raced east across the vast expanses of the Soviet Union with unprecedented speed. The armoured spearheads struck deep into Soviet territory encircling and destroying whole armies.
Amongst the massive casualties suffered by the RKKA in the face of the German onslaught were their poorly trained and led tank and motorised divisions. Although the Red Army had the world's biggest tank force, many were unserviceable when the war began, and most obsolete. The divisions were further hamstrung by shortages of tnicks, radios, and experienced officers (tank officers had suffered badly in Stalin's pre-war purge).

In den ersten Jahren des Zweiten Weltkrieges gehörte der Panzerkampfwagen III zu den wichtigsten gepanzerten Fahrzeugen der Panzertruppe des deutschen Heeres. Einige Zahlenbeispiele sollen diese Behauptung belegen. Zwischen 1937 und 1943 sind vom Panzerkampfwagen HI über 4900 Stück in verschiedenen Varianten hergestellt worden. Diese Zahl enthält nicht die vielen Abarten, die auf der Basis dieses Kampfwagentyps entstanden sind. Zu den bedeutendsten gehörten zweifelsohne der Panzerbefehlswagen III, von dem zwischen 1938 und 1943 über 400 Fahrzeuge zur Auslieferung gelangten, und die gepanzerte Selbstfahrlafette für Sturmgeschütz 7,5-cm-Kanone. Letztere ist unter der Kurzbezeichnung Sturmgeschütz III bekannt geworden, zu der ab 1943 noch die Sturmhaubitze III kam. Sturmartillerie, Panzerjäger- und Panzertruppe erhielten bis zum Fnde des Zweiten Weltkrieges über 10 600 Fahrzeuge dieser Bauart.
Die Bedeutung des Panzerkampfwagen III für die Entwicklung der Panzertruppe, ihrer Einsätze und Erfolge, ist sehr hoch zu veranschlagen. Letztlich sind es auch die großen, auf allen Kriegsschauplätzen eingetretenen Verluste, die das zum Ausdruck bringen. Nach dem Ab-schluss des Feldzuges in Frankreich meldete das Heer für die Monate Mai und Juni 1940 den Verlust von 135 Panzerkampfwagen III. Eine vergleichsweise geringe Zahl. Der Bestand an Panzerkampfwagen III stieg von 1440 am 1. Juni 1941 auf 2944 Fahrzeuge Anfang 1943. Ein Jahr später gab es davon nur noch 920. Bis zum Ende des Krieges gingen fast alle Kampfwagen dieses Typs verloren. Im monatlichen Durchschnitt sind das 70 bis 75 Fahrzeuge gewesen.

On 22 June 1941, the Wehrmacht with over three million soldiers attacked the Soviet Union. For the invasion the Panzerwaffe managed to field some 3,000 Panzers and were distributed among 19 Panzer-Divisions, 10 motorized infantry divisions, 4 motorized SS divisions, the motorized Grosdeutschland Regiment and a few independent assault gun units. Initially, the Panzer-Divisions achieved great success, however, the vast expanses of terrain its vehicles had to cover; and huge logistical problems, gave the commanders of the Panzer-Divisions serious difficulties, particularly when the winter arrived and the Russians put up stiff resistance. But still, the German factories were able to replace depleted armored vehicles at a steady rate. ......
