Durch eine Weisung Hillers erhielten im Frühjahr 1941 die Firma Henschel sowie Professor Porsche den Auftrag, einen Kampfpanzer mit einem Gefechtsgewicht von rd. 40 t und einer entsprechend schwereren Bewaffnung zu entwickeln. Als noch im selben Jahr die deutschen Truppen den russischen KW I und II sowie T 34 kennenlernten, wurde die Dringlichkeitsstufe erhöht.
Bereits im Frühjahr 1942 wurden daher beide Prototypen vorgestellt; hierbei erwies sich der technisch mehr konservative Panzer der Firma Henschel als der bessere; der mit vielen technischen Neuerungen versehene Porsche-Prototyp versagte dagegen völlig. Dennoch ließ Hitler - wohl auch wegen des Ansehens des bekannten Panzerkonstrukteurs - beide Typen weiter entwickeln.
So entstanden der Tiger I von Henschel und der "Ferdinand" (spater in "Elefant" umbenannt) von Professor Ferdinand Porsche; beide mit einer S,S cm Kampfwagenkanone (Kwk> versehen. Der Tiger 1 ist bereits im ersten Band dieser Reihe besprochen worden; ein weiterer über ihn wird in Kürze folgen. Fotos und Angaben über den "Ferdinand (Elefant)" sind im Band 2 zu rinden.

Military markings, in the basic sense of providing identification in battle, can be traced back to Neolithic man. Tribes and village clans would often paint themselves with distinctive patterns of "warpaint". In some othercases, tattoos or scars were used to mark members of a clan or tribe. These were permanent markings that usually had religious or mystical ritual meanings, and were not solely for use in warfare. Later in history, as armies became more organized in the specialty of military action for conquest or defense, flags, banners, and standards came into use to rally troops in the field and identify the positions of commanders. While elite troops (many of them professional soldiers hired and equipped by rulers or nobles) often wore standard uniforms which helped units stay together, the use of auxiliaries (who usually wore a variety of clothing) made the use of flags imperative. Most military transport was by horse drawn wagons, andthese were sometimes, during the Middle ages, hung with regimental flags and used as rallying points. These can be considered the first modern military markings.
World War I saw the first widespread use of national symbols, on aircraft and, in some cases, on armored vehicles. Unit symbols, such as the French system of playing card signs, were used to denote smaller organizations (regiments, battalions, companies, or platoons). Occasionally, vehicles carried individual identifying numbers within these units.
By the beginning of World War II, most nations had developed systems of symbols for their military vehicles and equipment. Modern military markings were developed with the conflicting goals of identifying units to friendly troops while denying this information to the enemy.

Neben den sich im Truppengebrauch befindlichen Panzern gab es auch eine Vielzahl von weiteren Projekten, die vor oder während des Krieges entwickelt wurden. Sie sind deshalb interessant, weil sie oft Versuchsträger für technische Neuerungen waren. An diesen Entwicklungen war in besonderem Maße die Firma Porsclie beteiligt, deren einfallsreicher Chef immer wieder ungewöhnliche Lösungen technischer Probleme vorschlug, auch wenn sich dann herausstellen sollte, daß vieles wegen zu großer Kompliziertheit oder wegen zu hohen Aufwandes nicht realisierbar war.

The tank was developed during the first World War as a means to break the stalemate on the Western Front. Its intended function was to break through enemy lines and clear the way for following infantry. This the tanks were eventually able to do, but they were unable to exploit their success because of their low speed and poor mechanical reliability. The enemy was usually able to rush reserve troops into the break and seal the front, necessitating a series of slow and costly break-through attacks. The infantry had no problem following the slow tanks during the attack, but was totally unprotected and suffered heavy casualties. The English proposed the Mark IX carrier, which was supposed to carry fifty infantrymen into battle protected by armor, but the design was still in prototype when the war ended.

When it became eminent the M60 MBT could no longer challenge the new Soviet armor such as the T-72 and T-80, development of the M1 ABRAMS Main Battle Tank was already under way. Many times before had such developments been haunted by cost overruns and Congressional scepticism. This time was no different and by early 1976 when the first prototypes became available, this weapon system was long overdue.
Finaly, in late 1979, most of the development problems were solved and the M1 was ready to go into production. The squared off appearance and low profile of the M1 contrasted totally with all former US Army developments and could be called revolutionary. The hull structure was designed to ensure crew survivability and provide protection for internally mounted equipment against a broad spectrum of antitank weapons. The hull armor configuration consists of a weld-fabricated rolled homogeneous armor (RHA) structure with armor protecting the front and sides of the crew areas. Fuel and main weapon ammo are separated from the crew in armored compartments. The hull ammo compartment is located aft of the engine bulkhead on the right side and separated from the crew area by sliding armor doors. The same protection is installed in front of the turret bustle ammo room which is topped by blast panels channeling an explosion upward.
The M1 is operated by a four men crew consisting of a driver, commander, loader and gunner, it is equipped with a 105mm M58E1 Rifled Cannon and a coaxial 7.62mm M240 Machinegun. The first Mi's on German soil were operated by the 64th Armor, 3rd infantry Division (Mechanized) in the fall of 1981.

Keine Waffengattung der Wehrmacht hat sich im Kriege so schnell und so umfassend gewandelt wie die Panzerabwehr. Aus der Not gegenüber feindlicher Pan/ermassen und -stärken entwickelten sich aus der anfänglich nur vorhandenen, durch ein Fahrzeug gezogenen 3.7 cm Pak (siehe Band 29), zahlreiche neue Waffen und -Systeme bis zu dem schwersten auf dem Gefcch Isfeld noch eingesetzten deutschen gepanzerten Fahrzeug, dem 76 Tonnen schweren Jagdtiger (zu sehen in den Bänden 2. 25 und 56). Aus der gleichen Notsituation erfuhr keine andere Waffe - außer vielleicht der Flak — Improvisationen in einem derartigen Umfang, und wurden ursprunglich für andere Zwecke gebauten Waffen - wie die Sturmartillerie (siehe Bände 4 und 39) und Flak (Bande 27 und 51) - im Einsatz zu Pan-/enägern.

Nach dem 1. Weltkrieg durfte Deutschland keine Panzer in seiner Reichswehr haben. Die Versuche und Entwicklungen mit verbotenem Gerät, Waffen und Munition nach den Bestimmungen des Versailler Vertrages begannen dennoch bereits Anfang 1921 und wurden im Geheimen bis in die 30er Jahre fortgesetzt. Zwar schritten die Entwicklung und die Konstruktion von Panzerfahrzeugen während des Jahrzehnts der 20er Jahre nur langsam voran, dennoch entstanden in dieser Zeit, teilweise in Rußland erprobt, die Panzer, die letzten Endes das Rückgrat der Panzertruppe der Wehrmacht werden sollten. General Lutz, Kommandeur der deutschen Kraftfahrtruppe, erhielt vom Heereswaffenamt den Auftrag, da die Entwicklung guter serienreifer Fahrzeuge zwischen fünf und sieben Jahre in Anspruch nähme, für die Zwischenzeit Übergangslösungen zu entwickeln. Diese "Übergangspanzer" sollten für die Ausbildung der Panzertruppen genutzt werden. Sie wurden jedoch später Deutschlands, nach der Menge bedeutendste Kampfpanzer, nämlich die Panzer III und IV.

Erst spat, und wie sich schon 1941 auf den Gefechtsfeldern Rußlands herausstellen sollte, zu spat, wurde der Bau von schweren Panzern vorangetrieben. Hieraus ergab sich eine zu schnelle Entwicklung mit den daraus resultierenden Nachteilen und schließlich eine zu geringe Produktion. Aber auch die Ausbildung litt darunter.
Aus Gründen, die dem Band 25 (Königstiger) entnommen werden können, gab es zwei schwere, sich um rund 12 t unterscheidende Panzer - den Tiger I und II (Königstiger).
Die ersten Einsalze des hier gezeigten Tiger I waren ab Ende August 1942 (Abteilung 502) bei Leningrad. Dezember 1942 (Abteilung 501) in Tunis.Nordafrika und Januar 1943 (Abteilung 503) bei Roslow am Don. Zum ersten Großeinsatz kam es im Juli 1943 bei dem Unternehmen Zitadelle (Kursk), an ihm nahmen 146 Tiger I teil. Danach gab es ihn an allen Fronten, jedoch immer nur in geringeren Zahlen.
