Herbert Wilcox (10)

Herbert Wilcox, director y productor británico (Cork, Irlanda, 1892-Brighton, Inglaterra, 1977).

En 1922 y 1923, produce tres películas de Graham Cutts (The Wonderful Story, Llamas de pasión [Flames of Passion], y Paddy, The Next Best Thing). A partir de 1923, realiza: Chu Chin Chow (1923), Southern Love (1924), Decameron Nights (id.), The Only Way (1925), Nell Gwyn (1926), London/Limehose (id.) Tiptoes (1927), Dawn (1928), The Bondman (id.), The Woman in White (1929).

Tras firmar su primera película sonora (The Loves of Robert Burras, 1930), se convierte en uno de los tres grandes, con Alfred Hitchcock y Anthony Asquith, de una industria cinematográfica británica en plena crisis: Carnaval (Carnival, 1931), El Danubio azul (The Blue Danube, 1932), Noches mágicas (Goodnight Vienna/Magic Night, id.), Nell Gwyn el gran amor de Carlos II (Nell Gwyn, 1926), Fierecilla sin domar (London Melody/Girl in the Street, 1937).

Su gusto por los decorados suntuosos y los ambientes aristocráticos recrean la grandeza victoriana en La reina Victoria (Victoria the Great, id., con su esposa Anna Neagle, que actúa en casi todas sus películas) y Sixty Glorious Years (1938). Utiliza el mismo academicismo en películas como La casa de los Courtneys (The Courtneys of Curzon Street/The Counney Affair/Karhy's Love Affair, 1947), Odette (1950). El enigma de Manderson (Trent's Last Case, 1953), Lío en el valle (Trouble in The Glen. 1954), Rapsodia real (King's Rhapsody; 1955), Años peligrosos (These Dangerous Years, 1957), The Heart of a Man (1959), su última realización.
