The North African campaign was the baptism of fire for the US Army in the European theater. The campaigns in Tunisia, Sicily, and on the Italian mainland were the prelude to the main campaigns in northwest Europe and were the primary focus of US Army operations from November 1942 to June 1944. Armor played a significant role in the Tunisian campaign, but only a supporting role in the fighting in Italy where the mountainous terrain limited the deployment of tanks. Some idea of the relative scale of armor fighting in Italy can be appreciated from the number of units deployed. There were 15 armored divisions and 37 separate tank battalions deployed in northwest Europe by 1945 while there was never more than one armored division and 8 separate tank battalions in Italy.

A companion volume to "US Tank Battles in France" and "US Tank Battles in Germany", this book is filled with crisp photos from the US Army Signal Corps archive. Of interest is photos of destroyed German and Italian tanks, American recovery vehicle, prime movers, treadway bridge layer, multiple rocket launcher, and all types of Shermans. The color plates include interesting French and Italian tanks with their colorful markings.

Początki dział samobieżnych ISU-152 sięgają 24 stycznia 1943 roku - wtedy to, pojawił się pierwszy pojazd należący do tej rodziny. Został oznaczony jako Obiekt 236 (Объект 236) i używał tej samej koncepcji co ISU-152. Wyprodukowano go w Fabryce nr. 100 w Czelabińsku. Próby zakończono 7 lutego 1943, a Obiekt 236 przeszedł je z pełnym sukcesem. W dniu 14 lutego pojazd został przyjęty i wprowadzony do produkcji pod oznaczeniem KW-14 (КВ-14). W kwietniu 1943 roku nakazano by używaną dotąd nazwę KW-14 zmieniono na SU-152 (СУ-152).

The Medium Tank Mark A, or Whippet as it was more commonly known, was what can be described as a second-generation Britis tank of World War I, being of completely different design to the "heavy" tanks built from 1916 onward. Some 200 Whippets were constructed by William Foster & Co., and after its introduction in March 1918, it was used until the end of the war and beyond.

During the 1960's, programmed instruction was voguish in commercial and institutional as well as educational circles. Antal, a major in the US Army, makes a martial equivalent of this technique the centerpiece of a gimmicky text that's as much manual as novel. Following detailed briefings on the Abrams tank and allied matters, the author introduces young Second Lieutenant Sam Jaeger. Posted to the Middle East, where America is engaged in desert warfare with an unidentified foe, Jaeger is given command of an armor platoon that's a key element in a battalion opposed by a motorized rifle division. In due course, our hero's outfit is assigned to attack hostile forces whose position is uncertain, and Jaeger must draft operational orders for his troops. At this point, Antal's narrative begins to fragment, taking on the character of a decision tree. At various stages, readers must exercise one of the several options open to the rookie officer and proceed to the sections disclosing the outcomes of their joint decision. Those who pick the correct passages through the author's tactical thicket are rewarded by the intelligence that their choices as proxies helped Jaeger win the day and earn a battlefield promotion to captain, plus a Silver Star. By contrast, failure to show initiative and to heed a superior's intent results not only in suppositious death or capture but also an invitation to try again. As Antal makes abundantly clear in his twisty, hard-boiled plotlines, armed conflict can prove terribly unforgiving of mistakes. A professionally correct bang-you're-dead exercise whose appeal seems limited to armchair strategists, gaming buffs, and, possibly, the Soldier of Fortune crowd. The didactic drill includes realistic maps, diagrams, tables, and line drawings throughout.

Concord makes picture books on many military topics, of which I own several. This book, USAREUR, is my favorite. It covers the U.S.Army troops in West Germany during the mid to late 1980's, and is chock full of fascinating photos of just about every vehicle they used, from tracked and wheeled ground vehicles to helicopters. Some reference is made to the various annual exercises these photos were taken of, and Jerchel includes two pages of text describing the major units in USARmy EURope up to the printing date of 1992. He even mentions the downsizing, many of these units being relocated or disestablished, and USAREUR is but a fraction of the size it used to be during the height of the Cold War.

The first series of pictures show various Army aircraft from medevac slicks to the Apache attack helo and even the OV-1 Mohawk. The next set are of the people, the soldiers themselves (I personally would have put them FIRST) and some weapons. Then civilian style trucks are covered, followed by the ubiquitous HMMWVs and heavier trucks. Color photographs are in the middle of the book, followed by the heaviest trucks. Then, we have some tracked engineer and electronic warfare vehicles and the towed GEMSS minelayer. Several pages of M113 series tracks follow, including the M163 Vulcan which were withdrawn shortly after this book went to press. Then various Bradleys from the plain vanilla to the A2 models, showing some dismounts to good effect. Then the tanks begin, with a page dedicated to the M60A3(TTS) which was withdrawn before the book was printed, then the mighty M1A1 Abrams (funny, no pictures of earlier models). Next are the recovery vehicles, M728 CEVs, bridgelayers, and two nice pictures of engineers with a ribbon float bridge. The book wraps up with field artillery and air defense systems like the HAWK and Patriot launchers. The one picture of Jerchel mugging it up while standing on an AVLB bridge is funny. He has a good eye with his camera, the photos in this book are shot with various and well proportioned angles and depict the subject well. The only thing I missed are photos of the units' home kasernes, many of which no longer exist as military bases.

Our aim with this title is to cover British military vehicles and helicopters involved in the 100 hour Land War to liberate Kuwait from the Iraqis. The last section covers Iraqi equipment captured or destroyed by the Desert Rats. Wherever possible, photographs taken either during the advance or within a few days of the liberation have been used but some subjects, particularly helicopters, were photographed prior to this. Far further coverage of British armour and transport in the build up to the war.

Compared to the tank, the armoured personnel carrier (APC) and the infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) have had a brief history. During the Great War a few visionaries had the notion of using armoured vehicles to transport soldiers around the battlefield and the first tanks were able to carry a few infantrymen, But it was not until the 1930s that the writings of armoured warfare prophets Fuller and Liddell Hart led to the first dedicated 'battlefield taxis'. Both men forecast that future armoured warfare would involve not just tanks but specialised armoured vehicles to transport the support arms upon which the tanks would depend and with whom they would co-operate. The infantry needed something better than their leg-power or roadbound trucks to maintain contact with the mobile armoured spearheads that Liddell Hart and Fuller foresaw.

No army since the Second World War has had as much experience or shown more skill in tank warfare than Israel's Zahal. The 1956, 1967 and 1973 wars in the Middle East provided textbook examples of superior mechanized tactics. This photographic survey is intended to provide a glimpse of the wide range of equipment used by the Israeli armoured force during these wars.
The Israeli armoured force had modest beginnings in the 1948 War of Independence. The original armoured vehicles were improvised armoured lorries cobbled together in clandestine workshops by the Haganah and other militias. Also, Israeli purchasing agents scoured old European battlefields and scrap-yards looking for military equipment that could be smuggled into Israel. A handful of old Hotchkiss tanks were found in France, and formed the original Israeli tank unit. France remained the primary supplier of armoured vehicles to Israel throughout 1956. Much of this equipment was ex-Lend Lease originally supplied by the United States, such as Sherman tanks and M3 and M5 half-tracks. Finally, before the outbreak of the 1956 war, France began to supply new armoured vehicles such as AMX-13 light tanks. Besides the French supplies, Israel also managed to scrape together additional vehicles located in European and Asian scrap-yards and renovate them in Israel. The ability of Israeli Ordnance teams to modernize and rebuild old hulks was in many ways as remarkable as the battlefield skills of the tankers.
It is difficult with hindsight to realize that the Israeli Armoured Corps was held in less than favourable light until the 1956 campaign. The 1948 war had been won by infantry and motorized infantry, and the influence of tanks was negligible. However, the brilliant success of tank units in 1956 marked a fundamental shift in Zahal, with the Armoured Force soon becoming the dominant element in the army. Indeed, Zahal is more heavily mechanized on a percentage basis than practically any other army today. Political fortunes changed in the wake of the 1956 war, with the de Gaulle government leaning more towards traditional Arab interests and ceasing to become a major arms supplier to Israel. Britain reversed its previous policy and agreed to sell Israel Centurion tanks, which was a critical step in the modernization of Zahal. But it was not until the US government, on the eve of the 1967 war, decided to permit the sale of arms to Israel that a relatively constant flow of equipment became available, continuing to this day. Nevertheless, Israel has a vigorous programme not only to modernize its older armoured vehicles, but, now with the Merkava, to build its own.
The author would like to express his thanks to Pierre Touzin, the Israeli Consulate in New York, the office of the Israeli Military Attache and Press Office of the Embassy of Israel in Washington DC, the Israeli Government Press Agency, Soltam Ltd., James Loop, George Balin and Joseph Desautels, without whose generous help in obtaining the photographs appearing here, this book would not have been possible. All photographs are from official Israeli government sources unless otherwise noted.

During the Second World War, British tanks were generally inferior to their German opponents with respect to their firepower and armour protection, while their high mobility in the early years was severely compromised by chronic unreliability. Since the war British designers have consistently pursued a policy that would prevent British troops ever taking the field again with tanks of inferior armour and armament. Unlike the European school of thought which advocates high mobility and firepower to ensure survival on the battlefield, the British consider that firepower is the primary attribute of a tank in defeating enemy armour at long ranges, followed closely by heavy armour protection to enable it to absorb punishment and manoeuvre at close quarters with relative immunity in a theatre of high-intensity warfare. Immediately after the war Britain abandoned the misguided doctrine of dividing tanks into 'Cruiser' and 'Infantry' types and adopted the idea of a 'Universal' or 'general purpose' tank, later to be known as the 'Main Battle Tank'. The first of these was Centurion, an excellent design capable of being repeatedly upgraded. Originally armed with the 17pdr, it was subsequently fitted with the 20pdr and finally the 105mm gun; the frontal armour was increased and fuel capacity more than doubled. Its successor, Chieftain, was designed from the outset to mount the most powerful and effective gun feasible, with a range of ammunition capable of defeating different armour arrangements at considerable range. The latest British Main Battle Tank is Challenger. It incorporates the latest developments in tank technology, including advanced compound armour, a computerised fire control system and thermal-imaging equipment for night fighting. Challenger is the product of more than 60 years of British tank development and is one of the foremost AFV designs in the world. The photographs on the following pages form a representative cross-section of the principal battle tanks employed by the British Army in the past forty years. In preparing them for publication I wish to thank the public relations departments of the Ministry of Defence; HQ Royal Armoured Corps Centre; National Army Museum; James Haddon; Vickers Defence Systems; and Les Wiggs of Soldier Magazine.
