This book covers the inception of anti-tank warfare on an individual basis in WWI, and its evolution through the last desperate days of May 1945. Full color obverse and reverse views are presented of issue and variant badges, to include embroidered and field-made styles. A fakes and reproductions chapter will help you detect bogus pieces. The method of wear is detailed for the wartime period as well as by recipients later in the Bundeswehr. Award documents plus Soldbuch/Wehrpass entries are studied. Recipients of the Hitler Youth, Volkssturm and Navy are also covered. Biographies and photos of 75 recipients help portray the heroism required to be awarded this badge. This book concludes with an excelent overview of all the weapons, both issued and makeshift, utilized by Germany's "Tank Killers"

This is the full story of the Churchill tank; from the design of an oversized prototype in Belfast in 1940 to its final achievements against Communist forces in the Korean War some ten years later. For those with an interest in technical matters this book goes into a great deal of detail. For those interested in the mechanics and politics of war production it explains the systems, processes and pitfalls in depth. For those studying war history it examines the Churchill tank in action from the beaches of Dieppe to the mountains of Tunisia; from the Gothic Line in Italy to the Siegfried Line in Germany and in the harsh terrain of Korea. The Churchill is examined mark by mark, from the A20 prototype through to the heavyweight Black Prince design of 1944. Details are given of its service with every British regiment that operated Churchills and of its use by Australian, Canadian, Irish and Russian forces. The author has drawn heavily on original research material held in the library of the Tank Museum at Bovington in Dorset, UK.

The U.S. Army's Ml Abrams Main Baffle Tank has dominated the civilian press and the military trade journals since the first production model rolled off the assembly line in February. 1980, with untold numbers of stories about its development, fielding, and problems both real and imagined.
Unfortunately, forgotten by many is the fact that the M60 family of tanks will still make up over fifty percent of the U.S. Army's inventory of main battle tanks until the late 1990s.
With the recent thaw in cold war tensions and the announced defense cutbacks by the U.S. Army, use of the M60 tank could last Into the 21st Century both with the U.S. tank fleet and foreign armies.
The history of the M60 tank begins in 1959 when a modified version of the M48A2 Pafton was introduced with a new front hull, a diesel engine, and a 105mm gun. To highlight the improvement over the earlier vehicle, it was redesignated as the 105mm gun tank M60. The M60 series of tanks had, since the beginning of Its production run in early 1960, been considered to be only an interim vehicle intended to serve the U.S. Army until the ideal tank could be designed and built. But, 15,000 tanks later, the M60 tank is still in service around the world. Numerous development programs helped to extend the useful life of the tank and kept it viable as a combat vehicle. Fortunately, the basic design was sound and easily accommodated the many modifications added to it over the years.
The last production version of the M60 tank was the M60A3, which was first introduced into US Army service In 1978.
The external appearance of the M60A3 tank is not very different from the M60A1 tank model. Only the thermal shroud on the gun tube, the wind sensor on top of the turret bustle, and the laser safety shield on the right side rangefinder blister distinguish it as an A3 model.
Unique features of the A3 are its Ml tank type fire control system, which include a laser rangefinder. solid state electronic computer, and a tank thermal sight (TTS for short).
The (TTS) provides a large improvement over image intensification sights as tound on earlier models of the M60 tank. It employs thermal technology so that its detection range is not dependent on moon or starlight. It "sees" as well in total darkness as it does in daylight and can detect targets through smoke, fog, and dust. It can also penetrate camouflage because it senses the heat of objects hidden by natural or manmade materials.

Tank Versus Tank gives a concise, easy-to-read and detailed overview of the history of the tank. Starting with WWI it details how the tank was developed, the technological advances that have gone into tanks, and the doctrines developed to deploy tanks in combat. It gives interesting details about the tank in its history. For example, in WWII tank vs. tank combat was relatively rare and it was much more common for tanks to face anti-tank guns in battle.

Most of the book details the history of tank warfare during WWII but it also details developments in tank warfare in the period between WWI and WWII and during the Cold War. The book was originally written just before the Soviet Union collapsed and it is interesting to see how its projections about future tank warfare have turned out. The author's guess that a new tank-destroyer design would be developed have proven to be wrong.

The book includes many different technical drawing and graphs showing how different tanks stacked up against each other in areas like armor and firepower. It also details many of the most famous tank battles in history. Overall this book is definitely recommended for anyone who has an interest in tanks or modern warfare.

In July 1943 the German Army launched what proved to be its last great offensive on the Eastern Front against the Kursk salient. Kursk: The Greatest Tank Battle Ever Fought 1943 is a comprehensive account of the last time that Germany held the strategic initiative in the war against the Soviet Union, which, once lost, would lead to the inevitable destruction of the Nazi state by the vengeful Red Army. The book begins with a study of the background to the battle and a description of the events on the Eastern Front before the opening of the offensive, including the decisive battle for Stallngrad that had finished only a few months beforehand. The strategic importance of the Kursk salient is considered, as are the factors that caused the Germans to delay their offensive, even when the element of surprise had been lost. The extensive Soviet defensive preparations are covered in depth, as are the strength of both sides and the new equipment, such as the Panther tank that the Germans were using for the first time. Kursk: The Greatest Tank Battle Ever Fought 1943 shows how a bitter struggle developed between the Soviet and German forces, which sucked in huge numbers of tanks and men into a small area, so that it became the greatest armoured battle of the war. The Red Army of 1943 was very different from the force that reeled before the German onslaught in 1941, and its new found professionalism wore down the attackers until all their momentum was lost. The final chapter discusses the full implications of the battle for the Germans and for the Russians. The book's authoritative text is complemented with detailed maps that explain the troop movements that took place during the battle. The book also includes appendices with information on orders of battle, losses and equipment.

The M25 Tank Transporter was a heavy tank transporter and tank recovery vehicle used in World War II and beyond by the US Army.

Nicknamed the Dragon Wagon, the M25 was composed of a 6x6 armored tractor (M26) and 40-ton trailer (M15).

Development

In 1942 a new 40 ton semi-trailer tank transporter was required. This was to offer better off-road performance than the M9 24-small-wheel trailer, and greater capacity than the 30 ton 8-large-wheel Shelvoke and Drewry semi-trailers, then in use with the Diamond T tractor unit. This new trailer was designed by the Fruehauf Trailer Company (based in Detroit, MI). A new tractor unit was required, as this heavier trailer was more than the Diamond T could cope with.

The M26 tractor was designed by the San Francisco-based Knuckey Truck Company. When Knuckey's production capacity proved insufficient the army awarded production to the Pacific Car & Foundry Co. of Seattle, Washington.

Designated TR-1 by Pacific Car, the 12-ton 6x6 M26 tractor was powered by a Type 440 240 bhp 6-cylinder gasoline engine developed exclusively for it by Hall-Scott (although also used to uprate the Diamond T). Some 2,100 Type 440s were built.[clarification needed] Baxter notes "over 1,300" M26 and M26A1 being built.

Unusually, the tractor unit was fitted with both an armoured cab and two winches with a combined pull of 60 tons. The intention was that as well as hauling the tank transporter semi-trailer, the tractor unit could itself be used for battlefield light recovery work.

A later unarmoured version of the M26 tractor was designated the M26A1. An experimental ballast tractor conversion was experimented with by the British FVPE

This is an excellent introduction overall to the Panzer Divisions of the Waffen-SS. The writing throughout is superb: The text is clear, precise, and objective. The book includes separate chapters on each of the major Panzer Divisions of the Waffen-SS: The 2nd (Das Reich); the 3rd (Totenkopf); the 5th (Wiking); the 9th (Hohenstaufen); the 10th (Frundsberg); and the 12th (Hitlerjugend). The strength of this book is in its illustrations - there are over 200 superb photographs, illustrating the soldiers and their tanks, both behind the lines and in action. These provide excellent source and reference material for military modelers; which is probably the readership who will find this book of most interest.

"Colonel Triplet's World War II memoir is distinguished by blunt realism that does not sugarcoat the realities of battle, the deficiencies of American training and equipment, and the shortcomings of preparation and leadership in World War II. There is a certain tendency abroad to romanticize World War II, to make all our soldiers brave and gallant and all our generals more than competent if not mostly brilliant. Triplet offers a useful antidote to such nonsense."-Russell F. Weigley. In this fascinating memoir, William S. Triplet continues the saga begun in his earlier book, A Youth in the Meuse-Argonne: A Memoir, 1917-1918. This book provides readers the rare opportunity to see firsthand what a real professional in the U.S. Army thought about America's preparation for and participation in World War II.
