This volume tells of the difficult birth of a whole new weapon. From the schemes and plans of the mid-19th century to the introduction of the first tanks into service and their baptism of fire. The tank went on to become an important feature in World War II and in modern warfare. The author tells of the experiments, the design and production of the early tanks and their use in the battlefield up to and beyond the Armistice.

About the Author
David Fletcher had been the librarian at the Tank Museum at Bovington for almost twenty years. He is a leading authority on tanks and he drove the Tank Museum's 1917 Mark IV for the BBC TV series Soldiers. He has appeared in many television programmes and has written numerous books and magazine articles.

Taking 1939 as its starting point, this book examines the development of British and Commonwealth armoured fighting vehicles, looking at the factors which led to the "great tank scandal". The book asks why Britain, who conceived and invented the tank in 1916, had such inferior tanks in World War II. Indecision in high places, stubborn industrialists, the German bombing campaigns and years of military vacillation meant that by the time of Dunkirk the British Army was virtually devoid of tanks. The story in this volume ends on the beaches of Dieppe, a tragedy that paves the way for a sequel which will deal with the last three yeares of the war. The author uses original source material - reports, minutes and correspondence - to tell the story, including the extracts from the diary of Michael Dewar, who headed the British Tank Mission to Washington, but met with opposition from London when he attempted to get American tanks for the British Army.

David Fletcher, librarian of Britain's Tank Museum, wrote a series of histories of British armored vehicle development from the turn of the century through 1945, originally published by the Tank Museum through Her Majesty's Stationery Office. This title is the last of that series, covering the second half of World War Two. The title refers to Field Marshall Montgomery's desire for what we today call a "Main Battle Tank," a British counterpart to and improvement upon the American Sherman tank. It would replace the overly specialized medium, or "cruiser" tanks, as well as the heavy "infantry" tanks then in service. No such vehicle was developed during the war, as British industry was obligated to keep obsolescent designs in production to avoid shortages at the front caused by retooling factories. Ultimately, Britain did produce a universal tank, the Centurion, but it missed the war. The text is detailed, but illustrations are few and far between. The book is a good starting point for historians, but model builders will want Mr. Fletcher's more recent books published by Osprey, Schiffer, and Darlingto

Wydał wiele książek zajmujących się współczesną techniką wojskową, a szczególnie czołgami sowieckimi oraz produkowanymi w WNP, a także wojną pancerną. Zajmuje się też modelarstwem. Częsty współpracownik redakcji brytyjskiego magazynu modelarskiego Military Modelling, członek stowarzyszenia modelarskiego Armor Modeling and Preservation Society.

Eine umfassende Darstellung aller „Geschütz-Zugmittel der Wehrmacht" ist verständlicherweise nicht das Anliegen dieses Waffen-Arsenal-Bandes. Vielmehr soll ein Überblick darüber vermittelt werden, auf welch vielfältige Weise die Nutzung erfolgte. Einerseits setzte man die unterschiedlichsten Kraft- und Panzerfahrzeuge zum Ziehen eines Geschütztypes ein, andererseits wurde eine einzelne Fahrzeugart zum Ziehen verschiedenster Geschütze verwendet. Es wird wohl niemals restlos nachvollziehbar sein, warum gerade die eine Einheit mit solchen Zugfahrzeugen und eine andere mit gleichen taktischen Aufgaben mit jenen ausgerüstet wurde. Eine Vielzahl von Faktoren haben sicherlich dabei eine Rolle gespielt: Wann und wo wurde die Einheit aufgestellt bzw. eingesetzt? Welche Aufträge schloss das Heereswaffenamt wann und mit welcher Firma ab? Wie schnell konnten Entwicklungsund Lieferverträge umgesetzt werden? Welches Zeughaus war für welche Standorte zuständig? Letztendlich war für die Truppe nur eine Frage ausschlaggebend: Welche zulässige Anhängelast muss das einzuführende Zugmittel haben, um die vorhandenen Geschütze ziehen zu können? Für die erwiesene Unterstützung soll an dieser Stelle folgenden Personen der Dank ausgesprochen werden: meiner Frau Anett, den Herrn Reinhard Frank, Rainer-Lutz Gau, Andreas Gryscheck, Timm Hassler, Gert Herr, Hans-Jürgen Janaczeck, Werner Klotzsche und Dieter Wiese.
