In this new, groundbreaking book, Rozina Visram offers an extensively researched, comprehensive study of Asians from the Indian subcontinent in Britain. Spanning four centuries, it tells the history of the Indian community in Britain from the servants, ayahs and sailors of the seventeenth century, to the students, princes, soldiers, professionals and entrepreneurs of the 19th and 20th centuries. Drawing on primary resources and recently declassified government documents, Visram examines the nature and pattern of Asian migration; official attitudes to Asian settlement; the reactions and perceptions of the British people; the responses of the Asians themselves and their social, cultural and political lives in Britain. This imaginative and detailed investigation asks what it would have been like for Asians to live in Britain, in the heart of an imperial metropolis, and documents the anti-colonial struggle by Asians and their allies in the UK. It is an invaluable contribution to our understanding of the origins of the many different communities that make up contemporary Britain.

Rosamond McKitterick - History and Memory in the C arolingian World (2004).jpg

This study reveals the remarkable quantity of varied forms and new types of history written in the Frankish realms of Western Europe during the eighth and ninth centuries. The Franks also preserved the classical and Judaeo-Christian histories from earlier centuries. Their books reflect a highly sophisticated and many-layered understanding of the past as well as a very creative use of history. Rosamond McKitterick illuminates the extraordinarily influential role of these history texts in the formation of political ideologies and senses of identity within Europe.

This portrayal of the Battle of Canakkale, as the Turks call it, paints a richer portrait of the past and broadens the knowledge and understanding of this tragic event. This battle has become a common bond between Turkey and the Australians and New Zealanders against whom they fought, and this book presents a point of view which is of growing interest.

All History - Louise Blakeney Williams - Modernism and the Ideology...y of History, Literature, Politics, and the Past 2002.jpg

Louise Williams explores the cyclical nature of historical memory in the work of five major Modernists: Yeats, Pound, Eliot, Ford and Lawrence. These Modernists, Williams argues, started their careers with historical assumptions derived from the nineteenth century. But their views on the universal structure of history, the abandonment of progress and the adoption of a cyclical sense of the past, were the result of the important conflicts and changes within the Modernist period. This wide ranging and inter-disciplinary study will be essential reading for anyone interested in modernist writing.

William Eleroy Curtis - The Turk and His Lost Prov inces, Greece, Bulgaria, Servia, Bosnia (1903).jpg

A rare, albeit grossly anti-Turkish, chronicle from the last years of the Ottoman Empire by W. E. Curtis (1850-1911), an American author and journalist. His works include: The Yankees of the East, Sketches of Modern Japan (1896), Modern India (1905), The Turk and His Lost Provinces, To-day in Syria and Palestine, Egypt, Burma and British Malaysia and United States to Dominate the Hemisphere.

Preface
Von Moltke, the great German soldier, predicted that a universal war would be fought under the walls of Constantinople. He had faith that the Christian Powers of Europe, sooner or later, would compel the Turks to respect their moral, political, and financial obligations. This would have been done years ago but for the jealousy of those Powers, and the thousands of innocent Macedonians who have been massacred and the hundreds of thousands who have suffered from Turkish cruelty are the victims of that jealousy. The Czar would intervene, but England, France, Austria, and Germany will not permit him to do so for fear Russia will obtain a port upon the Mediterranean. At intervals the uprisings in Macedonia have indicated the approach of hostilities. They have grown more frequent and serious until, as this little book goes to press, Russia and Austria have demanded a better government for Macedonia, and the Sultan has responded by ordering 250,000 Turkish troops into that province. Diplomatic negotiations and empty assurances may again avert war, but every sign indicates that Von Moltke's prophecy is soon to be fulfilled. The purpose of this publication is to give English readers a few facts about the several "buffer-states" of the Balkan Peninsula which cannot be elsewhere obtained. It is the result of a journey through that peninsula as correspondent of The Chicago Record-Herald, and although the author realizes that it is defective and incomplete, he is confident that the American public will appreciate his efforts to give them the timely information it contains.

William Laird Clowes - The Royal Navy, a history f rom the earliest times to the present (1899).jpeg

This book was originally published in 1900. Clowes was the naval correspondent for The Times. While he wrote much of the book, other sections were written by Sir Clements Markham, a retired admiral and President of the Royal Geographical Society; Alfred Thayer Mahan, author of the seminal "Influence of Seapower Upon History"; and Theodore Roosevelt, who wrote what is still considered one of the best histories of the War of 1812; among others.

Unusually for military histories, the book looks at other aspects of the Royal Navy besides naval operations. There are several long discussions of naval administration, shipbuilding, and even social life and customs of the sea. Markham's sections are concerned with exploration, which involved more than James Cook's voyages.

Written in modern English, this hundred-plus year old book is readable and still relevant. My only regret upon finishing it was that Clowes didn't live in the present time, so he could have brought the book up to date.

All History - Brian A. Pavlac - Witch Hunts in the Western World, P...nt from the Inquisition through the Salem Trials 2009.jpg

This comprehensive resource explores the intersection of religion, politics, and the supernatural that spawned the notorious witch hunts in Europe and the New World. Witch Hunts in the Western World: Persecution and Punishment from the Inquisition through the Salem Trials traces the evolution of western attitudes towards magic, demons, and religious nonconformity from the Roman Empire through the Age of Enlightenment, placing these chilling events into a wider social and historical context. Witch hunts are discussed in eight narrative chapters by region, highlighting the cultural differences of the people who incited them as well as the key reforms, social upheavals, and intellectual debates that shaped European thought. Vivid accounts of trials and excerpts from the writings of both witch hunters and defenders throughout the Holy Roman Empire, France, the British Isles and colonies, Southern Europe, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe bring to life one of the most intriguing and shocking periods in Western history.

Paula Sutter Fichtner - Terror and Toleration, The Habsburg Empire Confronts Islam, 1526-1850 (2008).jpg

Many negative stereotypes of Muslims can be traced to the clashes between the Ottoman Empire and Christian Europe in the Middle Ages. Paula Sutter Fichtner explores here the particular dynamics between the Ottoman and Austrian Habsburg empires and chronicles the evolution of a political relationship that shifted from hatred to understanding.

In the fourteenth century, Ottoman armies swept westward across the Danube Valley before confronting the Habsburgs, who ruled central and eastern Europe, and in Terror and Toleration, Fichtner charts the religious and political conflicts that fueled 300 years of war. She reveals how ruling powers in Vienna and the church spread propaganda about Muslims that still lingers today. But the Habsburgs dramatically reversed their attitudes toward Muslims in the seventeenth century, and through this story, Fichtner explains how one can recognize an enemy while adjusting one’s views about them.

Karen Barkey - Empire of Difference. The Ottomans in Comparative Perspective (2008).jpg

This book is a comparative study of imperial organization and longevity that assesses Ottoman successes and failures against those of other empires with similar characteristics. Karen Barkey examines the Ottoman Empire’s social organization and mechanisms of rule at key moments of its history: emergence, imperial institutionalization, remodeling, and transition to nationstate. She reveals how the empire managed these moments to adapt and avert crises and examines what changes made it transform dramatically. The flexible techniques by which the Ottomans maintained their legitimacy, the cooperation of their diverse elites both at the center and in the provinces, as well as their control over economic and human resources were responsible for the longevity of this particular “negotiated empire.” Barkey’s analysis illuminates topics such as imperial governance, institutional continuity and change, imperial diversity and multiculturalism, multifarious forms of internal dissent, and the varying networks of state– society negotiations.

Karen Barkey is professor of sociology and history at Columbia University. She is the author of Bandits and Bureaucrats: The Ottoman Route to State Centralization, winner of the Social Science History Award in 1995, and coeditor with Mark von Hagen of After Empire: Multiethnic Societies and Nation-Building: The Soviet Union, and the Russian, Habsburg, and Ottoman Empires. She has been awarded fellowships from the United States Institute of Peace, Social Science Research Council–MacArthur, and the National Humanities Center.

Edward J. Petuch, Mardie Drolshagen - Molluscan Pa leontology of the Chesapeake Miocene (2009).jpg

The Chesapeake Miocene will always be considered a paleontological treasure. Given the richness and accessibility of the Maryland and Virginia Miocene shell beds, it seems remarkable that very few people have ever described new species from these strata over the past 185 years. Until now. Integrating elements from paleontology, geology, environmental science, and ecology, Molluscan Paleontology of the Chesapeake Miocene assembles previous research and the authors’ experience into a synoptic field guide.
The most complete compendium of Miocene species created since 1904, this long-awaited resource lists nearly 500 species. It contains illustrations of 260 species, including more than 60 not found in any previous book and 26 newly discovered. It describes Chesapeake molluscan faunas in terms of local geology, paleoceanography, and marine paleobiology. Organized by stratigraphic geology, the book covers fossils of the Eastover, St Mary’s, Choptank, and Calvert Formations. It illustrates 24 collecting sites and fossil exposures, showing details of in situ specimens, along with maps of 4 Miocene paleoseas and detailed stratigraphic columns for Maryland and northern Virginia. Armed with these, you should be able to identify the species found in the amazingly rich shell beds of the Chesapeake Bay area.

Linda McJannet - The Sultan Speaks, Dialogue in En glish Plays and Histories about the Ottoman Turks (2006).jpg

All History - Linda McJannet - The Sultan Speaks, Dialogue in Engli...ish Plays and Histories about the Ottoman Turks 2006.jpg

The Sultan Speaks is the first study of English historical plays about the Turks in relation to their sources and analogues, including histories originating in Greek, Arabic, and Turkish. Drawing on Bakhtin’s concept of the dialogic and on narrative theory, McJannet traces the transmission of these eastern sources and analyzes Richard Knolles’s citation of the “Turks’ own chronicles,” the historiographic equivalent of letting the sultan speak. She demonstrates that while the historians increasingly contain the sultan’s words with adverse authorial commentary, playwrights such as Marlowe and Fulke Greville use both dialogue and commentary to enhance the sultan’s stature and to mitigate his negative acts.

Linda McJannet, Professor of English at Bentley College, was educated at Wellesley College and Harvard University. Her work on the East in early modern drama has appeared in journals such as Medieval and Renaissance Drama in England and in the collection Playing the Globe: Genre and Geography in English Renaissance Drama (1998). She is also the author of The Voice of Elizabethan Stage Directions: The Evolution of a Theatrical Code (1999).

A short interview with the author about this book can be accessed here (opens a web page in pdf). I recommend you read it first if you intend to download the book to get some relevance, and to put things in perspective.
