This cart wheel is a National Treasure. This is evidence of the way of life of Mongolians and the metalwork skills in Harhorum City, capital of Mongolia in the 13th Century. Mongolians were nomads; they owned a tent, a ger which they put on a cart and moved from one place to another. . The carts provided mobility for the Mongolians. Travelers from the 13th Century wrote that moving the Mongolian dwellings looked like moving a big city. The carts of the Khaans and lords weighed up to five tons.
History of the Object

This plated boots are a National treasure. They are unique boots of the Mongolian Middle Ages. Warriors going into battle on horseback were protected by metal plates, even in their boots, which were of thin flatly-beaten iron. Iron plates were put between the shaft and the vamp of a boot. The shaft is high, up to above knee. On this part there is a braid connected with the trouser’s belt. Until the beginning of the 1950s boots like this were still made in the same place where these boots were found. The sole and the shaft of these boots are thin, indicating they were made for the warm season.
History of the Object
These boots were kept by a lady, who was the 7th generation of the family who owned these boots. They were found in the Arhangai Aimag, Central Mongolia. The first owner of these boots was a warrior who lived in the 15th -17th Century period, when Mongolia was divided into small khanates (territory ruled by a khan). Khans often went into battle and the need for protective armour was great.

This is an important artifact for studying the culture of 13th Century Mongolia. It is a rare artifact of cord–edged applique work. The garment has a slanted collar and a flared skirt. The waist of the garment is pleated. It was made from silk and has been embroidered with original Mongolian patterns. The lapel, collar, the sleeves and the garment are decorated with the "horn" ornament. The original colour is unknown, today’s colour is light grey. Part of the garment is missing.
History of the Object
This is the garment of a Mongolian nobleman of the Mongolian Empire at the time of Khubilai Khaan. Khubilai Chinggis Khaan’s grandson (1215-1294) established the Yuan Dynasty as part of the Mongolian Empire. Khubilai became the ruler of Mongolia, Tibet, Korea, Manchuria and North China. Khubilai transferred the capital of the Mongolian Empire from Kharakhorum to Dadu (the site of current Beijing).

History of the Object
Metal plate armor has a long history in Asia, beginning in the Bronze Age. Asian plate armor was made of small flat or convex plates sewn overlapping to an undergarment as in the armored vest pictured here. Asian-style plate armor was lighter than European armor. It enabled more skin to chain mail and because it permitted more body movement it was more effective in hand-to-hand combat.
