Mała osada górnicza na końcu świata. Kiedyś tętniąca życiem, teraz opuszczona i pusta bo wyczerpały się pokłady złota, które jak magnes przyciągały kiedyś tych, którzy pragnęli się szybko wzbogacić. Została tutaj tylko Lena, młoda kobieta, właścicielka przydrożnego baru, która jest w ósmym miesiącu ciąży. Pewnego dnia do jej drzwi stuka Vilela były policjant wyrzucony z pracy i ścigany za przestępstwo, które popełnił w Sao Paulo.
Lena, nieufna i przyzwyczajona do samotności, początkowo odnosi się do mężczyzny z dystansem. Wkrótce jednak zdaje sobie sprawę, że pojawienie się Vileli może być szansą na rozpoczęcie nowego życia, a później nawet na ucieczkę ze znienawidzonego miejsca. Jednak Vilela ma plan. Chce przywrócić życie w osadzie i sprawić, że bar Leny stanie się tętniącym życiem miejscem, w którym zatrzymywali się będą wszyscy przejeżdżający obok kierowcy. Jego początkowy entuzjazm stopniowo zamienia się w zniechęcenie, a później we wściekłość i agresję, którą wyładowuje na Lenie.

"Pustkowie" jest mrocznym dramatem, o miłości, która przydarzyła się dwojgu ludziom tylko dlatego, że oboje są zrozpaczeni, zagubieni i zdesperowani. To także opowieść o braku nadziei i przygnębieniu, które prowadzi do szaleństwa.

W 2002 roku Michel Reilhac przygotował filmową antologię pt. „Polissons et galipettes” zawierającą wybór spośród kilkuset niedługo wcześniej odkrytych filmów o charakterze pornograficznym pochodzących z lat 1905-1930. W jednym z nich „Devoirs de vacances” istotną rolę gra pies dokonujący stymulacji oralnej zarówno męskich, jak i żeńskich organów płciowych. Pamiętać należy, że mówimy tu o czasie na długo przed powstaniem dzisiejszego, silnie skodyfikowanego modelu pornografii hard core przeznaczonego dla męskiego widza o orientacji heteroseksualnej. Jednak grupa docelowa pozostaje ta sama, gdyż filmy zawarte w „Polissons et galipettes” wyświetlane były w poczekalniach domów publicznych. Mimo to wiele z nich pokazuje zachowania seksualne wypchnięte na margines dzisiejszej pornografii filmowej, która dopuszcza prezentowanie stosunków heteroseksualnych, scen lesbijskich, grupowych i masturbacji żeńskiej. Reilhac zrekontekstualizował pornografię naszych pradziadków. Nie tylko wprowadził ją ponownie do obiegu, ale też wykazał, że w tym obszarze nie narodziło się nic nowego, że wszystko zostało już dawno nakręcone, że pornografia wyskoczyła niczym diabeł z magicznego pudełka projektora, już w chwilę po jego zbudowaniu. Poza tym praca Reilhaca, swoisty filmowy collage, stała się też wytworem funkcjonującym na własnych prawach – pokazywano ją na festiwalu w Cannes, w Wielkiej Brytanii została, pomimo prezentowanych treści, dopuszczona do obrotu kinowego m.in. ze względu na wartość historyczną.

THE ATROCITY EXHIBITION is a faithful adaptation of the 1970 novel of the same name by J.G. Ballard (author of EMPIRE OF THE SUN and CRASH). Jonathan Weiss' filmed adaptation concerns a doctor in a mental research institution who goes insane at the spectacle of the horrors of the end of the twentieth century, especially those communicated through modern media and broadcasting.

The film makes extensive use of rare archival footage acquired from such varied sources as the Nuclear Defense Agency, the Car Crash Analysis Library, and the Zapruder Estate. Weiss incorporates this footage into the narrative, weaving fact and fiction to create a unique film experience.

Ballard, whose other works were crafted into films by Steven Spielberg and David Cronenberg, writes of Weiss' film: "What a superb adaptation it is - it takes the logic of the book and translates it almost seamlessly into a very different medium...a ceaseless flow of atmospheric locations."

Motywy zbrodni bohaterów są zupełnie zatarte, a zakończenie zupełnie inne niż w "Bonnie i Clyde". Lepsze.

“Kidnapping movies were really big in the 1970's, especially after several high-profile cases like Patty Hearst. The Italian exploitation industry is notorious for taking its cues from the US movies, but that may not have been the case here since there was even a bigger kidnapping problem in Italy (eventually leading to the kidnap and murder of a former prime minister by the notorious Red Brigades). The kidnappers in this movie though are pretty low-rent types, barely connected to the Mafia. Their victim is a very spoiled, but perhaps not especially rich, teenage girl (Rena Neihaus) whose parents seem unable--or perhaps unwilling--to get her back (she hints at an incestuous relationship with her stepfather which might have been explored in the sequel to this "Oedipus Orca"). In this movie the youngest, most handsome kidnapper (Michele Placido) falls for the girl in kind of a reverse Stockholm syndrome, with tragic results for at least one of them. The end of movie, strangely enough, is kind of reminiscent of "Last Tango in Paris" but with nowhere near the dramatic gravitas”…
