The invasion of Russia in June 1941, Operation Barbarossa, was an enormous affair. It involved around 3 million German soldiers divided into 105 infantry and 32 panzer divisions. Initially, the German assault knifed through Russian resistance, and huge numbers of Red Army soldiers were surrounded. This latest volume from Concord Publications examines part of that attack, specifically the battles of Heeresgruppe Mitte. This central army, the largest of three participating in the attack, was commanded by Generalfeldmarschall Fedor von Bock.

This volume by Hans Seidler is brimming with black and white photographs showing soldiers from Heeresgruppe Mitte. The focus is on the Battles of Smolensk and Roslavl, conflicts that readers may not be terribly familiar with. The city of Smolensk commanded the route to the Russian capital of Moscow, and as German forces closed in on it, Russian forces launched a counterattack. This resulted in a large clash in early July 1941. However, the German juggernaut could not be halted, and Smolensk eventually fell on 16 July, with half a million enemy soldiers caught in the Smolensk pocket. Soon after this, General Guderian sought to defeat Soviet forces further east around the town of Roslavl. He launched a sudden and powerful attack on 1 August, and within two days the town was taken. These twin battles were among the most decisive and swiftest of all German successes on the Eastern Front.

The sharply reproduced photographs in the book show soldiers involved in the aforementioned fighting. Each photo is well captioned with pertinent details about uniform and equipment. The centerpiece of the book is four color plates by the illustrator Dmitriy Zgonnik. These pictures show infantrymen in typical dress as they fight the Red Army, with detailed explanation given about their equipment and dress. This is a most informative work on a location and period that is not well covered in other volumes about the German Army, and it will provide a useful reference for history buffs as well as military modelers.

The German advance on Stalingrad began on 17 July 1942, with von Paulus' 6.Armee taking the city in October and eventually encircled by the superior Soviet forces. The Germans lost some 205,000 men in the Stalingrad pocket. Some 91,000 remaining troops were captured when Paulus finally surrendered on 1 February 1943. According to some unofficial figures, the Soviet losses were more than 350,000 men lost, killed and wounded. This book consists of photos depicting Russian soldiers fighting in and around Stalingrad. Youth movement in Germany started as early as the 1920's and when Kurt Gruber took charge, the movement was officially called "Hitler Jugend" in 1926. By 1933, the membership rose to 2,300,000 youths. The underage boys were trained in all sorts of military skills including marksmen. Throughout the war, Hitler Jugend were involved, especially during the last days of the Reich, when Hitler Jugend fought alongside the Volkssturm defending the Fatherland. The 12.SS-Panzer-Division "Hitlerjugend" was formed in 1943. Many high rank officers were transferred from LSSAH including Fritz Witt, Kurt Meyer and Wilhelm Mohnke. The division was ready for action in the spring of 1944. The baptism of fire came when the Allies landed in Normandy and the division was thrown into battle against the Canadians. The division was enveloped in the Falaise pocket and survivors fought a series of rear guard actions as they withdrew from France towards Belgian, finally back to Germany. In December 1944, the division took part in the Ardennes Offensive. In 1945, the division was transferred to Hungary to fight against the Soviets and subsequently surrendered to the Americans in Austria on 8 May, 1945. Tom Cockle provides very informative and accurate text on the Hitler Youth and 12.SS-Panzer-Division "Hitlerjugend", backed up by many rare photos, especially those depicting boys in arms. As usual in this series, Ronald Volstad provides us with four high quality color plates, a good reference for modelers on the Hitler Jugend at war.

They had already conquered most of Europe. They then proceeded on their most enterprising project yet - Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia. The Death's Head Division's baptism of fire came in May 1940 in France where its men fought with courage and zeal. The Division was part of the reserve in Operation Barbarossa but at the Luga Line, the Totenkopf fought against suicidal Russian resistance. In 1942, the Division was involved in the Demyansk pocket battles but suffered heavy casualties. After re-fit, the Totenkopf joined other crack Waffen SS units in the battles of Kharkov and Zitadelle in 1943. After Kursk, the Division would never again possess anything like the strength it had at the beginning of 1943. With the general withdrawal of German forces in 1944, the Totenkopf fought rearguard actions at Grodno and Warsaw. In 1945, the Division defended Budapest and finally surrendered to the Americans near Vienna. This book is written by Paul Thomas, a renowned WWII historian, with many books on Germany Army to his credit. There are many unpublished photos, especially the ones taken at the Demyansk pocket during the winter months in 1942. The name actually means "Armed" (Waffen) Protection Squads" (Schutz Staffeln), and their "SS" initials were portrayed as runic lightning bolts. The "SS" name reflected the force's origins as a political unit to protect senior party officials, but of course it was to develop into a powerful combat entity. A total of thirty-eight Waffen-SS divisions were raised during the course of the Second World War, although many of the late-war divisions were of poor quality or were poorly equipped. The book covers the development of the Waffen-SS from its establishment on 6 December 1939, through to the end of 1942. A second companion volume will trace the Waffen-SS from 1943 through to the close of WWII. The book includes a brief description of how this notorious military organization expanded under the tutelage of Reichsfuhrer der SS Heinrich Himmler. There is a list of the eleven SS divisions formed up till 1942, and a useful table that compares German and U.S. Army ranks and formation names. As suggested by the title of this volume, the majority of the black and white photos portray Waffen-SS soldiers at war. This means there are plenty of good shots showing uniforms, equipment and weapons in the field of combat - all excellent material for figure modelers or military historians. Although not the focus of the book, there are incidental pictures of weapon systems and vehicles in use with SS forces. There are also four high-quality color plates expertly produced by Stephen Andrew. These give readers a glimpse of how uniforms and equipment was worn, and their typical coloring. The author has added very pertinent and helpful captions to the many photos contained in this book. For those wishing to take a close look at Waffen-SS personnel in action, whether in summer or winter, then this fine new volume will serve readers well. While the emphasis remains on troops serving on the Eastern Front, readers will not fail to find inspiration and enlightenment on various aspects of this important Germany military force of WWII!
