The Tang dynasty is often called China’s “golden age,” a period of commercial, religious, and cultural connections from Korea and Japan to the Persian Gulf, and a time of unsurpassed literary creativity. Mark Lewis captures a dynamic era in which the empire reached its greatest geographical extent under Chinese rule, painting and ceramic arts flourished, women played a major role both as rulers and in the economy, and China produced its finest lyric poets in Wang Wei, Li Bo, and Du Fu.
The Chinese engaged in extensive trade on sea and land. Merchants from Inner Asia settled in the capital, while Chinese entrepreneurs set off for the wider world, the beginning of a global diaspora. The emergence of an economically and culturally dominant south that was controlled from a northern capital set a pattern for the rest of Chinese imperial history. Poems celebrated the glories of the capital, meditated on individual loneliness in its midst, and described heroic young men and beautiful women who filled city streets and bars.
Despite the romantic aura attached to the Tang, it was not a time of unending peace. In 756, General An Lushan led a revolt that shook the country to its core, weakening the government to such a degree that by the early tenth century, regional warlordism gripped many areas, heralding the decline of the Great Tang.

Novelist and biographer Ackroyd (The Plato Papers; T.S. Eliot; etc.) offers a huge, enthralling "biography" of the city of London. The reader segues through this litany of lists and anthology of anecdotes via the sketchiest of topical linkages, but no matter not a page is dull, until brief closing chapters in which Ackroyd succumbs to bathos, for which he's instantaneously redeemed by the preceding chapters. He admits to using no original research, openly crediting his printed sources. Ackroyd examines London from its pre-history through today, artfully selecting, organizing and pacing stories, and rendering the past in witty and imaginative ways. "The opium quarter of Limehouse," he tells readers, for example, "is now represented by a Chinese take-away." Fast food, it seems, was always part of the London scene. When poet Thomas Southey asked a pastry cook why she kept her shop open in the worst weather, she told him that otherwise she would lose business, "so many were the persons who took up buns or biscuits as they passed by and threw their pence in, not allowing themselves time to enter." Ackroyd covers unrest and peace, fires and ruins, river and rail transport, crime and punishment, wealth and poverty, markets and churches, uncontrolled growth and barely controlled filth. If there is a hero among the throngs, it may be engineer Joseph Bazalgette, who in 1855 began building 1,265 miles of sewers to contain the Stygian odor of progress and keep the huge, ugly metropolis livable. No one should mind the extraordinary price of this extraordinary achievement. B&w illus., maps not seen by PW. (On sale Oct. 16)Forecast: Published to acclaim in England, this is virtually guaranteed major review coverage here, and the publisher will also shoot for national media. Anglophiles and others will rejoice.

Archaeological chemistry is a subject of great importance to the study and methodology of archaeology. This comprehensive text covers the subject with a full range of case studies, materials, and research methods. With twenty years of experience teaching the subject, the authors offer straightforward coverage of archaeological chemistry, a subject that can be intimidating for many archaeologists who do not already have a background in the hard sciences. With clear explanations and informative illustrations, the authors have created a highly approachable text, which will help readers overcome that intimidation. Topics covered included: Materials (rock, pottery, bone, charcoal, soils, metals, and others), Instruments (microscopes, NAA, spectrometers, mass spectrometers, GC/MS, XRF & XRD, Case Studies (Provinience, Sediments, Diet Reconstruction, Past Human Movement, Organic Residues). The detailed coverage and clear language will make this useful as an introduction to the study of archaeological chemistry, as well as a useful resource for years after that introduction.

Stimulated by ""Noahs Flood Hypothesis"" proposed by W. Ryan and W. Pitman in which a catastrophic inundation of the Pontic basin was linked to the biblical story, leading experts in Black Sea research (including oceanography, marine geology, paleoclimate, paleoenvironment, archaeology, and linguistic spread) provide overviews of their data and interpretations obtained through empirical scientific approaches. Among the contributors are many East European scientists whose work has rarely been published outside of Cyrillic. Each of the 35 papers marshals its own evidence for or against the flood hypothesis. No summary or overall resolution to the flood question is presented, but instead access is provided to a broad range of interdisciplinary information that crosses previously impenetrable language barriers so that new work in the region can proceed with the benefit of a wider frame of reference. The three fundamental scenarios describing the late glacial to Holocene rise in the level of the Black Seacatastrophic, gradual, and oscillatingare presented in the early pages, with the succeeding papers organized by geographic sector: northern (Ukraine), western (Moldova, Romania, and Bulgaria), southern (Turkey), and eastern (Georgia and Russia), as well as three papers on the Mediterranean. The volume thus brings together eastern and western scholarship to share research findings and perspectives on a controversial subject. In addition, appendices are included containing some 600 radiocarbon dates from the Pontic region obtained by USSR and western laboratories.

Late antique identities from the Western Balkans were transformed into new, Slavic identities after c. 600 AD. It was a process that is still having continuous impact on the discursive constructions of ethnic and regional identities in the area. Building on the new ways of reading and studying available sources from late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, the book explores the appearance of the Croats in early medieval Dalmatia (the southern parts of modern-day Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina). The appearance of the early medieval Croat identity is seen as a part of the wider process of identity-transformations in post-Roman Europe, the ultimate result of the identity-negotiation between the descendants of the late antique population and the immigrant groups.

Recently there has been an explosion of academic and popular interest in the history of how Britons have thought about their Empire. This volume focuses on the ways in which the intellectual history and political thought of modern Britain have been saturated with imperial concerns.
Chapters address thematic questions about size and scale, race, colonial emigration, and the ideological uses of the classical tradition, questions that are crucial for understanding the historical roots of British imperial thought. There are also studies of figures central to understanding the character of intellectual debates about the British Empire from the 18th to the 20th centuries: Edmund Burke, James Steuart, Adam Smith, and Harold Laski.
This volume also shows how an awareness of these histories of the imperial past can provide numerous lessons for understanding the strengths and weaknesses of much contemporary political thinking about empire and imperialism. In fact, while there are many studies of the British Empire, as well as innumerable volumes on the imperial cast of much modern history, the thematic and chronological coherence of this volume makes it a unique statement of the latest thinking about these questions from internationally acclaimed political theorists and intellectual historians.

A discussion of German historiography from around 950 to 1150, through a close examination of six works. In contrast to most earlier scholarship, it focuses on the narrative as an expression of the author's way of finding meaning in the sequence of events, and as evidence for their understanding of society, politics and human behaviour. In particular, it is shown that changing attitudes to society are reflected in the different ways the narrative is organized and individuals and their actions are represented. While the earlier works depict a society based on face-to-face relationships, the idea of an organized community, governed by the king as God's representative, becomes increasingly prominent in the later ones. Finally, the results of the analysis are discussed against the backdrop of more general trends in mediaeval political and
intellectual history.

Divided into 10 sections, these volumes examine 500 years of warfare, from the continent's European discovery and conquest through 2006 (the previous edition only covered through 1998, the year of its publication). Topics include intertribal warfare, European rivals, independence movements, Cold War politics, and terrorism. Each section has an introductory paragraph followed by entries covering significant dates written in lively present tense. These, combined with a plethora of facts including names, details of ships, and even the time of day an event occurred, make for amazing reading. Black-and-white maps, bland illustrations, a few grainy photographs, and sidebars are scattered throughout. The table of contents does not contain a listing of these additions, even though many of the sidebars are longer than entries. There are no textual footnotes or cross-references. Nonetheless the author has succeeded in his intention to "provide both scholarly and amateur historians with rapid access to information…."

With this monograph we begin our study of a hitherto unpublished topic concerning a merchant ship, since the AURORE was involved in the infamous "triangle" voyages.
After leaving France, the ship sailed to coast of Angola where she "traded" in six hundred Negroes, and then transported them to St Domingue.
Brought as slaves, they were sold but above all exchanged for goods from the colonies, almost exclusively for sugar. The ship would then return to France with its new cargo.
This work is presented in the same fashion as the preceding volumes. An historical text with previously unpublished illustrations allows us to study the slaver. The account of an expedition during the years 1784-85 has furnished specific and concrete information on the activities in trading, the voyage itself, and life aboard ship. The second part of the text includes commentaries on each of the plates, a glossary of rigging and photographs of a model of the Aurore built from the plans in the monograph.
Forty-seven plates were needed in order to present all drawings necessary for building the timber work and all the accommodations that were necessary on a slave ship. The monograph of the ship called l'Aurore was done on the basis of archival documents and its seriousness is especially worthy of note in the critical presentation of its sources.
With this collection we hope that model builders will become archaeologists and historians of yesteryear's navy. This is the goal of our publications that address themselves both to enthusiasts and scholars, offering here "what cannot be found elsewhere".
