A monumental work that presents a solid introduction to early Christian literature to the English reading public. It is the first work of its kind written originally in English. This achievement was completed with the publication of Patrology, Volume IV. Because of health difficulties, Johannes Quasten was unable to finish his masterwork. Fortunately, the Augustinian Patristic Institute of Rome decided to complete the Patrology its work is translated under the direction of Angelo di Berardino in the present volume IV.

The Abbey Church of Sainte-Foy of Conques, located in the south-west of France, was a stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. A masterpiece of Romanesque art, it was constructed from the second half of the eleventh century, and completed around 1120. Today, the thoroughly restored church is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The abbey's cartulary, containing 548 charters and other documents written between 801 and 1180, was rediscovered and edited by French archivist and palaeographer Gustave Desjardins (1834-1902), and published in 1879. These original documents not only provide information relating to the history of the abbey, but also yield valuable facts about the customs, the institutions, and the status of properties between the ninth and twelfth centuries. This volume, which includes an introduction putting the cartulary into its historical context, remains an essential reference for medievalists.

This book examines ancient figurines from several world areas to address recurring challenges in the interpretation of prehistoric art. Sometimes figurines from one context are perceived to resemble those from another. Richard G. Lesure asks whether such resemblances play a role in our interpretations. Early interpreters seized on the idea that figurines were recurringly female and constructed the fanciful myth of a primordial Neolithic Goddess. Contemporary practice instead rejects interpretive leaps across contexts. Dr. Lesure offers a middle path: a new framework for assessing the relevance of particular comparisons. He develops the argument in case studies that consider figurines from Paleolithic Europe, the Neolithic Near East, and Formative Mesoamerica.

The Naval Chronicle, published in 40 volumes between 1799 and 1818, is a key source for British maritime and military history. This reissue is the first complete printed reproduction of what was the most influential maritime publication of its day. The subjects covered range from accounts of battles and lists of ships to notices of promotions and marriages, courts martial and deaths, and biographies, poetry and letters. Each volume also contains engravings and charts relating to naval engagements and important harbours around the world. Volume 37, published in 1817, contains much discussion of the peacetime reduction of the navy, naval pensions, and piracy. Several articles focus on historical rather than contemporary events, including an account of the Battle of the Nile (1798) and eyewitness accounts of naval skirmishes in 1793. A biography of Sir John Hawkins and maps and descriptions of Dunkirk and Boulogne are also included.

Things get tense when Kiya has sons and the popular Nefertiti has only daughters, and they come to a boil when the army is used to build temples to the pharaoh and his queen instead of protecting Egypt's borders. Though sometimes big events are telegraphed, Moran, who lives in California and is making her U.S. debut, gets the details just right, and there are still plenty of surprises in an epic that brings an ancient world to life.

During the eighteenth century European governments began systematically using an international credit structure whose centre was the Amsterdam capital market. This book reconstructs that system and surveys its principal effects on the European and especially the Dutch economies. Eighteenth-century states borrowed chiefly to finance wars and, increasingly toward the century's end, debts from earlier wars. Military and naval spending and debt service together consumed up to eighty percent of peacetime revenues and more in war. Borrowing on international markets stabilised previously disruptive deficit financing techniques and moderated the economic consequences of sharply irregular war spending. This development however, eased the problems of war-making more than it developed national economies or enhanced prosperity. The Dutch, heretofore seen as having squandered the advantage of cheap credit, actually faced the difficult problem of finding productive uses for their savings at satisfactory returns.

Using more than 600 autobiographies written by working men of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Jane Humphries illuminates working-class childhood in contexts untouched by conventional sources and facilitates estimates of age at starting work, social mobility, the extent of apprenticeship, and the duration of schooling. The classic era of industrialization, 1790-1850, apparently saw an upsurge in child labour. While the memoirs implicate mechanization and the division of labour in this increase, they also show that fatherlessness and large sibsets, common in these turbulent, high-mortality, and high-fertility times, often cast children as partners and supports for mothers struggling to hold families together. The book offers unprecedented insights into child labour, family life, careers, and schooling. Its images of suffering, stoicism, and occasional childish pleasures put the humanity back into economic history and the trauma back into the industrial revolution.
