Jean - Jacques Rousseau (1712 - 1778)

Thorstein Veblen w „Teorii klasy próżniaczej” postawił antytezę do słów Rousseau. Stwierdził, że bogaci (określani mianem próżniaków lub rentierów) są zniewoleni schematem zachowań, który muszą zachowywać ludzie z określonej klasy społecznej. I pomimo zwolnienia z obowiązku utrzymania siebie i rodziny nie może postępować według własnych chęci. Czy Veblen słusznie wysnuł taką teorię i czy odnosi się ona jedynie do najbogatszych?

Angielskie przysłowie mówi: „Doskonała wolność zarezerwowana jest dla tego, kto żyje z własnej pracy, a w tej pracy robi to, co chce robić”.

Według Veblena jedyną pracą, którą wykonuje rentier, jest próżnowanie. Powodem nie jest jednak wolna wola, lecz chęć zaimponowania innym. Bogatemu człowiekowi nie wypada pracować. Już ten fakt zaprzecza jego całkowitej wolności. Praca jest nie tylko sposobem zarabiania pieniędzy, ale także możliwością samorealizacji. Lenistwo sprawia, że człowiek nie czuje się spełniony, popada w stagnację. Nie może jednak podjąć się na przykład pracy fizycznej, gdyż nie należy to do dobrego tonu. Naraża to osobę na wyśmianie lub odrzucenie.
Veblen twierdzi, że pieniądz wyznacza standardy dobrego smaku. Człowiek musi znać określone książki, filmy, obrazy, by móc prowadzić swobodną konwersację z innymi rentierami. Bogacz należy do nielicznej grupy. Wymusza to na nim dostosowanie się do jej wymogów i zachowań. Elitarność tego społeczeństwa powoduje, że przez zachowywanie się w określony sposób zyskuje się akceptację wszystkich. Wszelkie odstępstwa od zasad przyjętych przez ogół bogatych są łatwo zauważalne, tak więc całe życie rentiera staje się „na pokaz”.

Jednak czy rzeczywiście pieniądz wyznacza kulturę jedynie próżniakom? Każdy człowiek żyje w niewielkiej grupie społecznej (domu, szkole, pracy i tym podobnych) i musi dostosować się do jej wymagań. Biedny jest ograniczony brakiem pieniędzy. Koszty wyjść do teatru, filharmonii czy nawet codziennej higieny nie pozwalają mu na korzystanie z tego, co potocznie nazywa się kulturą. Można odnieść to do słów Karola Marksa: „byt określa świadomość”, a kultura jest przecież jej częścią.

Moim zdaniem zachowań opisanych przez Veblena nie można przypisać do jednej grupy społecznej, ale w pewnym stopniu dotyczą one każdego. Pieniądze warunkują określony sposób bycia nie tylko najbogatszym. Status majątkowy wpływa na środowisko, w którym żyjemy, a to z kolei na nasze zachowania, sposób myślenia, cele – a więc wszystko, co nazywamy kulturą.

Google became a verb, countries waged war games in the new digital universe and WikiLeaks sent shockwaves through a superpower. We got to this point from a place that was called the dot.com bubble.

Few booms in Australia have been faster or more furious than this bubble. The brightest and best investors dived in, technology geeks grew into overnight millionaires and miners stopped digging dirt and started surfing the net. The market surged and crashed, as the dot.com bubble became the dot.com bomb.

Australia witnessed a truly extraordinary efflorescence of unrestrained investment fervour. Tagged as 'irrational exuberance' by Alan Greenspan during the boom's formative period, it became a wild moment of fin de siecle and millennial madness. A new way of valuing companies (on cash flow entirely, rather than boring old profitability) was invented to match the new technology in play. What began with internet services and telecom start-ups stretched to any kind of business that could be sold on the net - from Balmain bugs to sex toys. Some entrepreneurs jumped off the rollercoaster as millionaires; more stayed on, crashed or sank without trace.

While there have been a number of books in the USA on this extraordinary historical period, this is the first comprehensive, colourful telling of the wild Australian ride. And looking back, we learn that while the internet promised to level the business playing field it has in fact done the opposite, as the market dominance of Google, Apple and Facebook attest.

This is another wonderfully illustrated title for Concord Publishing along with 'Barbarians' and 'Imperial Rome at War.' Tim Newark provides short ovreviews of the various militaries of the the ancient world, adding some interesting anecdotes here and there - for instance, he mentions one Roman centurion charging into battle with a burning coal attached to his helmet, in order to scare the superstitious Celts!

Unfortunately, not all of Newark's writings are up to date with modern scholarship, and there are a few errors in the text. Still, the main reason to buy the book is to see Angus McBride's wonderful colour plates. There are 20 in all, these include -

This book examines contemporary Russian nationalism as it reemerged in the wake of Gorbachev's liberalization. The first part of the book analyzes the ideology of authoritarian nationalism, as it was developed by the conservative intelligentsia. The second section examines its political impact from 1987 to the Presidential elections of 1996. The book argues that the new nationalism provided opponents of reform with an apparently novel justification for their hostility to the liberalization inaugurated by Gorbachev and erratically pursued by Yeltsin.

In Casino Capitalism, Hans-Werner Sinn examines the causes of the banking crisis, points out the flaws in the economic rescue packages, and presents a master plan for the reform of financial markets. Sinn argues that the crisis came about because limited liability induced both Wall Street and Main Street to gamble with real estate properties. He meticulously describes the process of lending to American homeowners and criticizes both the process of securitizing and selling mortgage claims to the world, as well as the poor job rating agencies did in providing transparency. He argues that the American Dream has ended because the world now realizes that this dream was built on loans that are never likely to be repaid.
Sinn also asserts that the banking crisis has not yet been resolved, because the necessary write-offs of toxic assets have largely been swept under the carpet. Comparing actual worldwide write-offs with those estimated by the IMF estimates, he concludes that substantial parts, if not most, of the true losses have yet to be revealed and that the banking systems of many countries are on the brink of insolvency.
In view of this, he directs sharp criticism at the various economic rescue packages, arguing that the plans assume that banks have a liquidity problem while, in fact, they suffer from a solvency crisis. Sinn points out that the conflict between the goals of rescuing banks in the short term and inducing more prudent behaviour in the long term requires the government to help the banks, but not their shareholders, by becoming a temporary co-owner. In addition, he calls for higher equity requirements, a worldwide return to more cautious accounting methods, a ban on extremely speculative short selling, and strict regulations on conduits, hedge funds and credit default swaps.
This authoritative account provides an invaluable overview for academics, students, policymakers, politicians, and all those with an interest in the unprecedented 2008 banking crisis.
