Livre à l'épaisseur impressionnante, au format horizontal, intelligemment servi par une taille qui reste raisonnable et l'absence d'une couverture cartonnée rigide, laquelle aurait encore accru la masse et l'encombrement de l'objet. Lorsque l'on prend L'Encyclopédie historique du journal Tintin-Kuifje entre les mains, on perçoit immédiatement le poids de l'ouvrage, mais celui-ci reste manipulable.
À l'intérieur, les plus de 700 pages sont très majoritairement imprimées en monochrome, mais l'éditeur a choisi de substituer un marron sombre au noir. Assez élégante, cette teinte évoque avec nostalgie un temps passé que l'on regrette, à l'instar du sépia. Mais elle est également moins contrastée sur le blanc du papier, et donc un peu moins lisible. Signalons une petite quarantaine de pages intégralement en quadrichromie, disposées en ouverture et en fermeture du volume ; l'auteur en profite pour multiplier les illustrations (portraits des principaux héros des séries du journal, couvertures des albums publiées par les Éditions du Lombard, etc.).
L’ouvrage peut être segmenté en trois grands ensembles, quitte à prendre quelques libertés avec le découpage de la table des matières. Un premier moment, courant sur une centaine de pages, vise à donner un aperçu de l'histoire du magazine de BD. Il procède notamment en reprenant une série d'interviews réalisées avec les rédacteurs en chef successifs du journal. Un second temps, courant sur environ 300 pages, prend la forme d'un dictionnaire des auteurs et des séries du Journal de Tintin. Le déroulés des auteurs (dessinateurs et scénaristes) présents dans les pages du journal occupe près de 250 pages. Ils y sont introduits par une notule de présentation et un visuel (photo ou dessin), suivis d'une recension de leurs parutions. Divers index et tables détaillent les séries, par exemple une chronologie du journal indiquant les nouvelles séries apparaissant chaque année dans ses pages. Le troisième moment du livre est composé de sa seconde partie, nommée « En promenade au gré des pages ». Il s’agit d’une nouvelle série de tables et d’index classant et catégorisant tout ou partie du magazine selon diverses manières. Par exemple la table des couvertures du magazine, celle qui recense « tout ce qui, de près ou de loin […] se rapproche » des sciences et des techniques, celle qui répertorie les pages de jeux, etc.
Le livre a été imprimé à 1000 exemplaires : 100 hors commerces, destinés aux auteurs ou à leurs ayants droit, 250 qui ont été vendus par souscription et qui sont dits « édition originale », et 650 qui forment la « première édition ».

Edward Gorey is an author and an illustrator who has carved a unique niche creating macabre graphic novels that are part satire and part social commentary--comics for adults. Though often relating lurid tales of Victorian crime, Gorey eschews blood and gore in favor of atmosphere and humor. Here the editors have collected a representative sample of his work. Ross, an artist, and Wilkin, an art critic, also provide a useful introductory essay on Gorey's work and an informative interview with him. The book includes a complete bibliography and photographs of Gorey's library and studio.
Habitual watchers of PBS TV's long-running Mystery! may constitute the largest number of Edward Gorey fans--provided, of course, that they all love the show's animated introduction, for it is Gorey's contribution. Long before the show, Gorey had attracted a staunch band of admirers with his gravely humorous rhymed stories set in an Edwardian never-never land and illustrated in children's picture-book fashion, one drawing per page or line of verse. If your child had a somewhat morbid sense of humor, they could be marvelous children's books, but they were basically for adults fascinated by Gorey's literary and artistic allusions and the droll dreariness of his densely crosshatched style (although he rarely uses color, his thicket of lines ineluctably conjures them in the mind's eye; of course, all are the hues of dusk). Besides a little gallery of his work, this sampler includes a literate admiration by Wilkin and a splendidly amusing tete-a-tete with the artist by Ross. Ray Olson
Issue 4 of Daniel Raeburn's irregular magazine about comics, focusing on Mexico's historietas perversas, or "perverse little histories," the hugely popular but critically reviled comic books also known as ghetto librettos.
First, if you are already into this form of Japanese erotic story telling, it is a beautiful collection of varied styles that explores the intricacies of the individual characters and the narratives of their unique identities that the word "gay" simply can't completely encompass. It showcases a number of major artists of the form, engages in a very strong scholarly examination of the genre, features wonderful introductions/interviews with each artist (outlining everything from their personal stories, their understanding of their sexuality within a sexual community, and a very lucid study of their aesthetics), virtually censorship free (very rare for gay visual eroticism coming from Japan, the liberty of which is largely due to the support and appreciation shown by the editors to the artists and the artistic merit of their work), includes a very brief but thoroughly researched history of male same-sex desire in Japan (from far back in the country's past to the present day), and contains content that just wonderfully hot.
For anyone not familiar with this art style but interested in becoming more acquainted with it on an extensively large number of levels, this collection of what is usually called in "Bara" in English is without question the best place you could start. As mentioned before, one of the great elements of this volume is how it is both an assemblage of different approaches to a particular genre of homo-eroticism through sampling so many talents and also a fine work of scholarship. I'm using the term "bara" for convenience's sake, but the term's usefulness in describing this art style (which I will say focuses on larger men, ranging from men with more-to-love type figures to hyper-muscled types and much more). The artists featured are in so many ways taste makers who gave articulations to desires that certainly existed but were/are not given much attention in many cultures because of cultural preoccupations with certain bodily "ideals." One way you can tell the editors knew what they were doing is by looking at the reverence that is shown to Gengoroh Tagame, who is the central figure behind this art movement and also the inspiration for the historical and aesthetic study that structures the analytical sections (Tagame is also a first-class historian of sexuality). It's hot, smart, a great introduction for the curious, and an invaluable volume for fans and advocates of this very diverse and bodily affirming style of illustrated sexual expression.
Just to be clear, this is a great collection of very sexy short manga narratives. That alone, aside from all of the other wonderful things this great book achieves, makes owning the text a very seductive and raw investment.
