Using Martin Heidegger’s notion of space and Jean-Luc Nancy’s idea of community, Martin Coward outlines a theoretical understanding of the urban condition at stake in such violence. He contends that buildings are targeted because they make possible a plural public space that is contrary to the political aims of ethnic-nationalist regimes. Illustrated with reference to several post-Cold War conflicts – including Bosnia, Chechnya and Israel/Palestine – this book is the first comprehensive analysis of organised violence against urban environments. It offers an original perspective to those seeking to better understand urbanity, political violence and the politics of exclusion.

John Collis - The European Iron Age (1997).jpg

This ambitious study documents the underlying features which link the civilizations of the Mediterranean--Phoenician, Greek, Etruscan and Roman--and the Iron Age cultures of central Europe. Themes presented include: the spread of iron-working over most of Europe; the development and spread of a trading system throughout temperate Europe; and the rise of ever more complex societies, including states and cities, and eventually empires. Offering challenging views on population movement, diffusion, trade, social structure and spatial organization, it deals with the gradual process which culminated in the Roman Empire.

Dragan Bujosevic, Ivan Radovanovic - The Fall of M ilosevic, The October 5th Revolution (2003).jpg

Told for the first time, the riveting story of how common people-miners, cooks, former soldiers-shook off the intimidation of Serbian strongman Slobadan Milosevic and overthrew, peacefully, his tyrannical regime. Based on numerous interviews with participants, from the man in the street to top officials in the Serbian regime, The Fall of Milosevicrecounts the exhilaration, fear and chaos of a population rising in opposition to a tyrant, the Butcher of the Balkans. As the people gather in protest, behind the scenes the pillars of Milosevic's regime crumble as politicians, military officers, and the police desert a leader no longer legitimate in the eyes of the people. This is the story of individuals facing down fear and rising up for democracy.

All History - Christer Jorgensen - Hitlers Espionage Machine, Germa...nce Agencies and Operations During World War II 2004.jpg

An in-depth study of all the varied facets of the Nazi intelligence apparatus ranging from the dreaded Gestapo, the daring Brandenburg battalions through to the SD under the Central Security Service of the Reich. The history of each unit is examined in great detail including its formation, the missions that it carried out and its importance in the war as a whole. Explored is the phenomenon of the fractious rivalry that ran rife throughout the intelligence community and analysis is made on the effect that this had in damaging Germany's intelligence collection, analysis and dissemination, especially the rivalry between Canaris, head of Abwehr and the SS intelligence service. Firsthand accounts from the men who took part in Nazi espionage educates the reader into the mindset of a German agent and the book also shows how vital Hitler's espionage machinery was to him taking power and succeeding in conquering vast swathes of Europe. It also shows how the very same machine ultimately put a nail into the Nazi coffin with poor analysis, costly errors and downright inhumanity.

All History - Werner Abelshauser, Wolfgang von Hippel, Jeffrey Alla...obal Enterprise, BASF, The History of a Company 2003.jpg

This corporate history of BASF offers a view of the functioning of an industrial organization that has managed to thrive and expand since 1865. Moreover, it reveals much about the reasons for the extraordinary economic dynamics of the German empire and the enormous expansion of the world economy before World War I. It permits the probing of the origins and spread of the knowledge society, in which science and research-based innovation have become the key determinants of economic growth and social development. Accordingly, BASF's history developed at the core of Germany's wartime economy during both world wars and highlights its strengths as well as its weaknesses.

Osprey - Men-at-Arms 309 - David Nicolle - The Ita lian Invasion of Abyssinia 1935-36 (1997).jpg

In October 1935 Mussolini ordered the invasion of Ethiopia from Italian-held Eritrea and Somaliland, thinking that he would easily crush an ill-prepared and badly equipped enemy. The Italians, in the face of widespread condemnation from the League of Nations, spread terror and destruction through their indiscriminate use of air power and poison gas against an enemy more used to Medieval methods of warfare. David Nicolle examines in detail the units, equipment and uniforms of the forces on both sides of this conflict that unrealistically bolstered Il Duce’s colonial ambitions. A great read ably supported by Raffaele Ruggeri’s detailed full-page colour plates.

Duncan Bell - The Idea of Greater Britain, Empire and the Future of World Order, 1860-1900 (2007).jpg

During the tumultuous closing decades of the nineteenth century, as the prospect of democracy loomed and as intensified global economic and strategic competition reshaped the political imagination, British thinkers grappled with the question of how best to organize the empire. Many found an answer to the anxieties of the age in the idea of Greater Britain, a union of the United Kingdom and its settler colonies in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and southern Africa. In The Idea of Greater Britain, Duncan Bell analyzes this fertile yet neglected debate, examining how a wide range of thinkers conceived of this vast "Anglo-Saxon" political community. Their proposals ranged from the fantastically ambitious--creating a globe-spanning nation-state--to the practical and mundane--reinforcing existing ties between the colonies and Britain. But all of these ideas were motivated by the disquiet generated by democracy, by challenges to British global supremacy, and by new possibilities for global cooperation and communication that anticipated today's globalization debates. Exploring attitudes toward the state, race, space, nationality, and empire, as well as highlighting the vital theoretical functions played by visions of Greece, Rome, and the United States, Bell illuminates important aspects of late-Victorian political thought and intellectual life.

Michael H. Kater - Hitler Youth (2004).jpg

In modern times, the recruitment of children into a political organization and ideology reached its boldest embodiment in the Hitler Youth, founded in 1933 soon after the Nazi Party assumed power in Germany. Determining that by age ten children's minds could be turned from play to politics, the regime inducted nearly all German juveniles between the ages of ten and eighteen into its state-run organization. The result was a potent tool for bending young minds and hearts to the will of Adolf Hitler.

Baldur von Schirach headed a strict chain of command whose goal was to shift the adolescents' sense of obedience from home and school to the racially defined Volk and the Third Reich. Luring boys and girls into Hitler Youth ranks by offering them status, uniforms, and weekend hikes, the Nazis turned campgrounds into premilitary training sites, air guns into machine guns, sing-alongs into marching drills, instruction into indoctrination, and children into Nazis. A few resisted for personal or political reasons, but the overwhelming majority enlisted.

Drawing on original reports, letters, diaries, and memoirs, Kater traces the history of the Hitler Youth, examining the means, degree, and impact of conversion, and the subsequent fate of young recruits. Millions of Hitler Youth joined the armed forces; thousands gleefully participated in the subjugation of foreign peoples and the obliteration of ""racial aliens."" Although young, they committed crimes against humanity for which they cannot escape judgment. Their story stands as a harsh reminder of the moral bankruptcy of regimes that make children complicit in crimes of the state.

Osprey - Warrior 125 - Stephen Turnbull - Pirate o f the Far East, 811-1639 (2007).jpg

Feared throughout the Far East, Japanese pirates were likened to 'black demons' and 'flood dragons'. For centuries relations between Japan, Korea and China were carried out through a bizarre trinity of war, trade and piracy. The piracy, which combined the other elements in a violent blend of free enterprise, is the subject of this original and exciting book. Stephen Turnbull vividly recreates the pirates' daily lives, from legitimate whaling and fishing trips to violent raids. He explores the bases and castles used by the pirates and uses eyewitness accounts and original artwork to give stunning descriptions of a vicious and brutal life.

Doyne Dawson - The First Armies (2002).jpg

When did mankind invent war, and has violence always decided human arguments? When did ritualized tribal conflict become organized and hunting expeditions turn into armies? And, are we genetically programmed for combat? From Stone Age warriors to the savage cruelty of the Assyrian Empire, embark on an investigation of the origins of human aggression, including the first weapons purpose--built to kill other people. It becomes clear even the earliest civilizations developed military institutions, devoting themselves to war-making technologies that ranged from chariots to siege engines. The story concludes with the Assyrians, a society completely dedicated to military conquest.and one which pioneered the use of terror and mass executions as an instrument of state policy.
