The year 2008 marks the centennial birth anniversary of Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose who, at a relatively young age, established himself among the ranks of European scientists during the heyday of colonial rule in India. He was one of those great Indian scientists who helped to introduce western science into India. A physicist, a plant electrophysiologist and one of the first few biophysicists in the world, Sir J C Bose was easily 60 years ahead of his time and much of his research that was ignored during his lifetime is now entering the mainstream. As the inventor of millimeter waves and their generation, transmission and reception, and the first to make a solid state diode, he was the first scientist who convincingly demonstrated that plants possess a nervous system of their own and feel pain. J C Bose later spent his life's savings to set up the Institute which carries his name in Calcutta and Darjeeling. This book covers Bose's life in colonial India, including the general patriotic environment that pervaded at the time and how he became one of the flag bearers of the Bengal Renaissance. It also examines the scientific achievements of this polymath and his contributions to physics and plant electrophysiology, while highlighting his philosophy of life.

John Emsley - The 13th Element, The Sordid Tale of Murder, Fire, and Phosphorus (2000).jpg

Discovered by alchemists, prescribed by apothecaries, exploited by nineteenth-century industrialists, and abused by twentieth-century combatants, phosphorus is one of nature's deadliest-and most fascinating-creations. Now award-winning author John Emsley combines his gift for storytelling with his scientific expertise to present an enthralling account of this eerily luminescent element. From murders-by-phosphorus where the bodies glowed green, to the match factory strike that helped end child labor in England, to the irony of the World War II firebombing of Hamburg, to even deadlier compounds derived from phosphorus today, The 13th Element weaves together a rich tableau of brilliant and oddball characters, social upheavals, and curious, bizarre, and horrific events that comprise the surprising 300-year history of nature's most nefarious element.

Bailey Stone - Reinterpreting the French Revolutio n, A Global-Historical Perspective (2002).jpg

Bailey Stone uses recent scholarship on the diplomatic, political, social, economic, and cultural history of eighteenth-century revolutionary France to examine the outbreak of the French Revolution and the dramatic developments of the subsequent decade. Stone finds events of the period attributable to the interacting pressures of international and domestic politics on those national leaders attempting to govern France and to modernize its institutions. He contends that the Revolution of 1789-1799 needs to be viewed in the larger contexts of "early modern" and "modern" French history and modern "progressive" sociopolitical revolutions.

Martin Brown, Richard Osgood - Digging Up Plugstre et, The Western Front Unearthed (2009).jpg

This is the compelling story of the Australian soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division who journeyed to England in 1914, and who fought and died on the Western Front during the First World War. Using archaeology as the vehicle for their story, Martin Brown and Richard Osgood follow in the footsteps of the Aussies, from their training on windswept Salisbury Plain to the cheerless trenches of Belgium, where they ‘dug-in’ north-east of Ploegsteert to face the Germans. It presents a unique window into the world of the men who marched away to fight the so-called ‘war to end wars’.

Trevor Lloyd - Empire, A History of the British Em pire (2009).jpg

For almost two hundred years, Britain dominated the world, its naval supremacy enabling it to acquire a vast empire, including India, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and much of Africa. Although, it could not prevent its American colonies from becoming independent, its industrial and commercial power helped it to keep its scattered possessions under control, while a small army was sufficient to put down native rebellions in the absence of the involvement of other European states. A dwindling economy, and the cost of two world wars, saw this once-mighty empire crumble, giving in the process independence to nearly all of its dominions in the years after 1945. "Empire" is a succinct and highly readable account of this extraordinary rise and fall.

Stanley M. Burstein - The Reign of Cleopatra (2004 ).jpg

Ambitious, intelligent, and desired by powerful men, Cleopatra VII came to power at a time when Rome had cast its eyes on the Egyptian Empire. Cleopatra lived her whole life at the centre of a complex power struggle for control of Egypt and Rome, and her death simultaneously heralded the end of the Ptolemaic dynasty, the loss of Egyptian political independence, and the beginning of the Roman imperial age. For later generations, Cleopatra's legacy has come to symbolize the potent force of female sexuality and power. In this engaging and multifaceted account the author presents Cleopatra in the context of the cultures, countries, and people that surrounded her throughout her life, and in so doing develops a compelling picture of a legendary queen, and an historic reign. Designed as an accessible introduction to Cleopatra VII and her time, this book offers readers and researchers an appealing mix of descriptive chapters, biographical sketches, and annotated primary documents. An overview of the Ptolemaic Dynasty is presented in the introduction, and is followed by chapters on Cleopatra's life, the reality of Ptolemaic Egypt, Cleopatra's multicultural Egyptian society, and Alexandria's culture and conflicts. The narrative chapters conclude with a section discussing Cleopatra's significance as a person, a queen, and a symbol. An annotated bibliography and index are also included in this work.

Ludwig von Mises - Omnipotent Government, The Rise of the Total State and Total War (1985).jpg

Published in 1944, during World War II, "Omnipotent Government" was Mises' first book written and published after he arrived in the United States. In this volume Mises provides in economic terms an explanation of the international conflicts that caused both world wars. Although written more than half a century ago, Mises' main theme still stands: government interference in the economy leads to conflicts and wars. According to Mises, the last and best hope for peace is liberalism - the philosophy of liberty, free markets, limited government, and democracy.

Cecelia F. Klein - Gender in Pre-Hispanic America (2001).jpg

Gender in Pre-Hispanic America offers rich opportunities for comprehending current trends and considering future directions in research. It is unique in that it puts social theory at the forefront of the discussion. The book has a special intellectual presence and contemporary relevance in its engagement with the social lives and constructs of its authors and readers alike. The consideration of the role of gender in our daily lives, including in our professions, becomes inescapable when reading this book. It is not simply a question of men's roles having been possibly overemphasized and overstudied to the detriment of women's. The fact that genders, as opposed to sexes, are socially constructed categories focuses our attention on the ways in which these and other social constructs have shaped our present understanding of the past and informed past peoples' understand of their present. In various articles in this book, the reader will not find unanimity in what is meant by "gender" or how to go about studying it. What will be found, however, is a collection of interesting, informed, thought-provoking, and often lively essays. It is hoped that this volume will mark a stage in an evolving study of this field and provoke new research in the future.

Émile Prisse d'Avesnes - Histoire de l'Art Égyptie n; Atlas1 (1978).jpg

All History - mile Prisse dAvesnes - Histoire de lArt gyptien Atlas1 1978.jpg

Émile Prisse d'Avesnes (d'Avennes) (1807-1879) was an important mid-19th century French Egyptologist. He was a soldier, engineer, writer, illustrator and talented linguist.
From 1827 to 1844 d'Avesnes resided in Egypt, teaching cartography and working as an engineer for a time, but eventually he devoted himself to documenting and studying the archaeological treasures from ancient Egypt.
He published a number of Egypt-centric works in the decade following his return to France. The most important of d'Avesnes' publications was released in installments over ten years and eventually compiled into a three volume work (one text and two illustrated atlases) in 1878 entitled: 'Histoire de l'Art Égyptien: d'après les Monuments; Depuis les Temps les Plus Reculés Jusqu'à la Domination Romaine' (~The history of Egyptian art from monuments from the earliest times up to Roman occupation). This Volume is the 2nd illustrated Atlas in d'Avesnes work, dedicated to Ancient Egyptian Design, Painting and Industrial Art.

Edward J. Erickson - Ordered to Die, A History of the Ottoman Army in the First World War (2000).jpg

The first general history in English of the Ottoman Army in the First World War, Ordered to Die is based on newly available Turkish archival and official sources. Outnumbered and outgunned, the Ottoman Army performed astonishingly well in the field and managed to keep fighting until the end of the war, long after many other armies had quit the field. It fought a multi-front war against sophisticated and capable enemies, including Great Britain, France, and Russia. Erickson challenges conventional thinking about Ottoman war aims, Ottoman military effectiveness, and the influence of German assistance.

Elena Agarossi, Harvey Fergusson II - A Nation Col lapses, The Italian Surrender of September 1943 (2 000).jpg

Drawing on mostly unpublished documents, A Nation Collapses revises the traditional understanding of a critical moment in the history of World War II: the collapse of the Italian fascist regime and Italy's unconditional surrender in September 1943. The book argues that, during their secret negotiations before the overthrow of Mussolini in July 1943, both Italy and Britain negotiated in bad faith and with a great deal of duplicity. The resulting misunderstandings and misjudgments resulted in an unexpectedly long and brutal campaign of conquest following Italy's surrender.

Thomas J. Laub - After the Fall, German Policy in Occupied France, 1940-1944 (2010).jpg

German policy in occupied France during the Second World War was in many ways a story of bitter internal conflict between the various German agencies in charge of the occupation. After the Fall provides a detailed analysis of the struggle between these different agencies, highlighting the significant differences in ideology, policy, and method between the army, the SS, and the diplomatic service, and the rivalries between them in their struggle for dominance.

While the military government tried to exploit French industrial resources, the SS was focused more exclusively upon pursuing Nazi racial policies (often to the detriment of the wider military effort). In turn, the SS felt frustrated in the pursuit of their racial policies by a lack of assistance from the military. Meanwhile, the diplomatic service was frustrated in its attempts to spread Nazi propaganda and promote Franco-German reconciliation by Hitler's refusal to approve the substantial economic or political concessions that were needed to make this policy effective. Outside this circle of rivalry, caught in a battle that they did not understand, the French leaders tried to demonstrate their loyalty to Hitler's New Order by cooperating with the various competing German agencies.

After the Fall examines how these battles developed and what they implied for the direction of German policy in France, from the exploitation of the French economy and the suppression of resistance activity to the attempt to carry out Nazi racial plans. In the process, it sheds much light on both the inner workings of the Nazi regime and on the decisions made by the French government during the course of the occupation.

James Hinton - Nine Wartime Lives, Mass Observatio n and the Making of the Modern Self (2010).jpg

In Nine Wartime Lives, James Hinton uses diaries kept by nine 'ordinary' people in wartime Britain to re-evaluate the social history of the Second World War, and to reflect on the twentieth-century making of the modern self.
These diaries were written by some of the unusually self-reflective and public-spirited people who agreed to write intimate journals about their daily activity for the social research organization, Mass Observation. One of the nine diarists discussed is Nella Last, whose published diaries have been a source of delight and fascination for many thousands of readers. Alongside her there are chapters on eight other Mass Observers, each in their own way as vivid, interesting, and surprising as Nella herself.

A central insight underpins the book: in seeking to make the best of our own lives, each of us makes selective use of the resources of our shared culture in a unique way; and, in so doing, we contribute, however modestly, to molecular processes of historical change. Placing individuals at the center of his analysis, James Hinton probes the impact of war on attitudes to citizenship, the changing relationships between men and women, and the search for meanings in life that could transcend the wartime context of limitless violence.

Consistently sensitive, thoughtful and often moving, this beautifully written book resists nostalgic contrasts between the presumed dutiful citizenship of wartime Britain and contemporary anti-social individualism, pointing instead to longer run processes of change rooted as much in struggles for personal autonomy in the private sphere as in the politics of active citizenship in public life.
