Grade 8 Up-Shields places Putin's life and career in a clear historical context. For example, he introduces his subject as a young KGB agent stationed in East Germany at the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall, then goes on to explain the Cold War from its origins to its end. The chapters on Putin's boyhood, education, and early experience in Dresden may be the most personal, but even here readers are given a sketch of the history of the Soviet Union and the city of Leningrad. Subsequent chapters examine Putin's return to Leningrad, entry into politics, and move to Moscow. The final three chapters focus on his election to the presidency of Russia, the Kursk accident, and his dealings with the West through the end of 2001. There are plenty of well-chosen, full-color photos, and the chapters are subdivided into short sections. A few careless errors mar the otherwise well-written text. Twice KGB appears as KBG, and there are some sentences such as "He was born during at the height of the Cold War-" that escaped editing. Occasionally, there are misleading statements such as the assertion that the names of Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia were erased from maps after World War II. Nevertheless, the book is timely and provides a good summary of the life of this important head of state.

After disastrous defeats at the hands of the Mongols in the 13th century, the Russian principalities became vassals of the Khans of the Golden Horde for more then 200 years; and at the same time the western princes faced the German crusaders of the Teutonic Order. Remarkably, Russia responded with a new surge of military vigour. Eventually, freedom from the 'Mongol yoke' coincided with a degree of unity around a powerful new state - Muscovy. This exciting chapter of history is illustrated with rare early paintings, photos, diagrams, and eight plates reconstructing the mixed influences of East and West in the appearance of Russian warriors.

Since the fall of communism, public opinion in Russia, including that of a now more diverse elite, has become a substantial factor in that country's policymaking process. What this opinion might be and how it responds to American actions is the subject of this study. William Zimmerman offers important and sometimes disturbing insight into the thinking of citizens in America's former Cold War adversary about such matters as NATO expansion. Drawing on nearly a decade of unprecedented surveys he conducted with a wide spectrum of the Russian public, he gauges the impact of Russia's opening on its foreign policy and how liberal democrats orient themselves to foreign policy. He also shows that insights from the study of American foreign policy are often "portable" to the study of Russian foreign policy attitudes. As Zimmerman shows, the general public, which had a modest but real role in foreign policy decision making, tended much more toward isolationism than did the predominant elites who steered Russia's foreign policy in the 1990s. Interspersing smooth prose with a wide array of richly informative tables, the book represents an invaluable opportunity to discern probable shifts in Russian foreign policy that domestic political changes would bring. And it powerfully suggests that the West, by forging its own policies toward Russia with more prudence, can have a say in the outcome of the great choice facing Russia--whether to forge ahead with democracy or slip back into authoritarianism.

This eagerly awaited volume, the first of its kind by western scholars, describes the development amongst the diverse inhabitants of the immense landmass between the Carpathians and Urals of a political, economic and social nexus (underpinned by a common culture and, eventually, a common faith), out of which would emerge the future Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. The authors explore every aspect of life in Rus, using evidence and the fruits of post-Soviet historiography. They describe the rise of a polity centred on Kiev, the coming of Christianity, and the increasing prosperity of the region even as, with the proliferation of new dynastic centres, the balance of power shifted northwards and westwards. Fractured, violent and transitory though it often is, this is a story of growth and achievement - and a masterly piece of historical synthesis.

The reforms initiated by Peter the Great transformed Russia not only into a European power, but into a European culture--a shift, argues James Cracraft, that was nothing less than revolutionary. The author of seminal works on visual culture in the Petrine era, Cracraft now turns his attention to the changes that occurred in Russian verbal culture.
The forceful institutionalization of the tsar's reforms--the establishment of a navy, modernization of the army, restructuring of the government, introduction of new arts and sciences--had an enormous impact on language. Cracraft details the transmission to Russia of contemporary European naval, military, bureaucratic, legal, scientific, and literary norms and their corresponding lexical and other linguistic effects. This crucial first stage in the development of a "modern" verbal culture in Russia saw the translation and publication of a wholly unprecedented number of textbooks and treatises; the establishment of new printing presses and the introduction of a new alphabet; the compilation, for the first time, of grammars and dictionaries of Russian; and the initial standardization, in consequence, of the modern Russian literary language. Peter's creation of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, the chief agency advancing these reforms, is also highlighted.
In the conclusion to his masterwork, Cracraft deftly pulls together the Petrine reforms in verbal and visual culture to portray a revolution that would have dramatic consequences for Russia, and for the world.

Stressing the relationship between tsarism's service-state ethos and its utilization of subjects, this study argues that economic and political, rather than judicial or penological, factors primarily conditioned Siberian exile's growth and development.

This book deals with an important region, the southern frontier of Russia, from Tbilisi to Vladivostok, at a vital point in modern history, when new political forces where transforming the states of Turkey/the Ottoman Empire, Iran, Afghanistan and China. The strategic significance of this region remains crucially important today, as, again, new political forces make an impact. Importantly, the book looks at the region from the standpoint of the Russian general staff, who were much concerned with 'the security perspective', with regional wars both actual and potential, the development and likely consequences of new weaponry and new military techniques, and the behaviour of neighbouring states.

What is the "real Russia"? What is the relationship between national dreams and kitsch, between political and artistic utopia and everyday existence? Commonplaces of daily living would be perfect clues for those seeking to understand a culture. But in Russia, everyday life was hidden behind political, ideological or artistic screens, deemed irrelevant or inscrutable. And all who write big books on Russian life confess their failure to get properly inside Russia, to understand its "doublespeak". This book provides a view of Russia that is historically informed and filled with unexpected detail. Alternating analysis with personal accounts of Russian life, Boym conveys the foreignness of Russia and examines peculiar conceptions of private life and common good, of "culture" and "trash", of sincerity and banality. Armed with a dictionary of untranslatable terms, we step around uncle Fedia asleep in the hall, surrounded by a puddle of urine, and enter the communal apartment, the central exhibit of the book. It is the ruin of the communal utopia and a unique institution of Soviet daily life; a model Soviet home and a breeding ground for grass-root informants. Here, privacy is forbidden; here the inhabitants defiantly treasure their bits of "domestic trash", targets of ideological campaigns for the transformation (perestroika) of everyday life. Against the Russian and Soviet myths of national destiny, the trivial, the ordinary, even the trashy, take on a utopian dimension. Not even the books can be simply good reads. They must be "Great Literature" or they are junk. In Russia, a bad writer, a graphomaniac, is a threat to the national dream. Boym studies Russian culture in a broad sense of the word; she ranges from 19th- and 20th-century intellectual thought to art and popular culture. With her we go walking in Moscow and Leningrad, eavesdrop on domestic life, and discover jokes, films and TV programmes. In the final chapter, Boym reflects on the 1991 coup that marked the end of the Soviet Union and evoked fin de siecle apocalyptic visions. The book ends with a poignant reflection on the nature of communal utopia and nostalgia, on homesickness and the sickness of being home.

"When Empire Meets Nationalism" presents an in-depth political and sociological analysis of the internal power politics and imperial forms developed by the Russian neo-eurasianists and the neo-conservatives in the United States. This innovative study traces the growth of nationalism and the concept of 'Empire' in relation to the ideologies and foreign policy of, both Russia and the USA. Beginning with the genealogy of the two movements, the authors present the intricacy of imperial rhetoric and nationalist ideologies in modern states compared to the distinctive definition of Empire as a politico-historical form. The extent to which these influences and ideas have succeeded in shaping the foreign policy of Russia and the USA are then applied to events in Afghanistan, China, Georgia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. Each example asserts that the historical and political richness of the so-called imperial forms and the legitimacy of such a denomination will remain. The combination of the political theory and geopolitics with a broad selection of case studies from across the world makes this cutting edge examination of neo-conservatism and neo-eurasianism a must read to all interested in the evolving discourse surrounding Empire.

The dramatic transformation of Russian architecture from the 1880s to the 1917 revolution reflected the profound changes in Russian society as it entered the modern industrial age. William Craft Brumfield examines the extraordinary diversity of architectural styles in this period and traces the search by architects and critics for a "unifying idea" that would define a new architecture. Generously illustrated with archival materials and with the author's own superb photographs, this is the first comprehensive study by a Western scholar of a neglected period in European architectural and cultural history. Brumfield explores the diverse styles of Russian modernism in part by analyzing the contemporary theoretical debate about them: the relation between technology and style, the obligation of architecture to society, and the role of architecture as an expression of national identity. Steeped in controversy, Russian modernism at the beginning of the century foreshadowed the radical restructuring of architectural form in the Soviet Union during the two decades after the revolution. This authoritative work provides a new understanding of Russian architecture's last brief entrepreneurial episode and offers insight on our own era, when individual freedom and initiative may once again find expression in Russian architecture.

This is the first scholarly account by a Western historian of the Time of Troubles, the period of civil war and foreign invasion in early-seventeenth-century Russia. The author focuses on the various pretenders or royal imposters who appeared at this time; she traces their careers and offers explanations for their success. Her analysis of the phenomenon of pretense illuminates popular perceptions of the monarchy in early modern Russia, and demonstrates how social protest could take the form of support for imposters claiming to be the "true tsar".

Historians of the Russian Revolution naturally tend to concentrate their attention upon the Bolshevik 'victors' and on the Mensheyiks - ideologically the closest of their rivals, - and to neglect other political movements. For the Russian Liberals at least, Dr Galai redresses this imbalance. This book traces the nineteenth-century origins of the Liberation Movement (also known as the Liberal Movement), the social and historical conditions which led to its formation in the first years of the twentieth century, its policies, influence, initial success and ultimate failure. Against the background of the political and social crisis culminating in the 1905 Revolution, Dr Galai traces the stages by which the Liberation Movement became supreme among the forces of opposition but ultimately was defeated and disintegrated. It failed to fulfil its aim of replacing Tsarist autocracy by a constitutional-democratic regime and to demonstrate effectively that there was an alternative to the extremes of Tsarism and Bolshevism.
