This publication is a reprint of General Momyer's book originally published in 1978. The book offers the general's observations, many from personal experience, of airpower in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. It is an account of the evolution of practical airpower through strategies and campaigns. The book examines strategy, command and control of airpower prior to and during the Vietnam conflict, air superiority, interdiction in all three wars, airpower and the ground battle, and experiences in blunting an attack using airpower.

Jonathan Sutherland - African Americans at War, An Encyclopedia (2003).jpg

Grade 9 Up–The roles African-American men and women have played in military conflicts from Colonial times to the present day are covered in this alphabetically arranged resource. Entries range from a few paragraphs to several pages; many cover individuals who have become firsts in their field or area, such as Crispus Attucks, first to die in the Revolutionary War, and Benjamin O. Davis, Sr., the first African-American general in the U.S. Army. A number of articles examine aspects of service in the Civil War, including that of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and the 1st South Carolina Volunteers. Use of the table of contents will allow readers to note the range of subjects covered and to locate overviews on such topics as "African American Women in the Military," "Segregation and Racism in the Military," and the "Tuskegee Airmen." Articles include documented quotes, occasional charts, see-also references, and good-quality, black-and-white reproductions and photos. The second volume ends with a chronology, lists of battles, Medal of Honor winners, two detailed indexes, and more. While not all libraries will need this specialized resource, it is a useful and accessible set.

Carl E. Prince - Brooklyn's Dodgers, The Bums, the Borough, and the Best of Baseball, 1947-1957 (199 7).jpg

During the 1952 World Series, a Yankee fan trying to watch the game in a Brooklyn bar was told, "Why don't you go back where you belong, Yankee lover?" "I got a right to cheer my team," the intruder responded, "this is a free country." "This ain't no free country, chum," countered the Dodger fan, "this is Brooklyn." Brooklynites loved their "Bums" Pee Wee Reese, Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Roy Campanella, and all the murderous parade of regulars who, after years of struggle, finally won the World Series in 1955. One could not live in Brooklyn and not catch its spirit of devotion to its baseball club.In Brooklyn's Dodgers, Carl E. Prince captures the intensity and depth of the team's relationship to the community and its people in the 1950s, showing how the team extended its influence well beyond the sports arena. He captures both the racial intensity surrounding Jackie Robinson's breaking the color line, and the controversy it generated on the team, in baseball, and the nation. He takes a hard look at the Dodger's ubiquitous presence in the life of Brooklyn, the team's closeness to the children, female fans, and Brooklyn's diverse ethnicity. Prince goes on to open the door to the male culture of Brooklyn's bars, the wonderful baseball played by thousands of Brooklyn's boys on the Parade Grounds, including many who made the leap to the Dodger's minor league farm system, as those who made the ultimate jump to the majors. And Prince doesn't ignore the underside of the Dodger experience: the paternity suits and "baseball Annies," the routine baseball-related 50's sexism, and the ethnic conflicts that went with the Brooklyn territory.

Kevin Hillstrom - The Dream of America, Immigratio n 1870-1920 (2009).jpg

Adding to the series 'Defining Moments' is a strong focus on immigration history divided into three sections: a narrative overview of immigration around the world and America, a collection of biographies on leading figures influencing their times, and a gathering of primary source documents on U.S. immigration history, making this especially key for high school to college-level history collections.

Lester D. Taylor, H.S. Houthakker - Consumer Deman d in the United States, Prices, Income, and Consum ption Behavior (2009).jpg

01 - USA1 - Lester D. Taylor, H.S. Houthakker - Consumer Demand in... States, Prices, Income, and Consumption Behavior 2009.jpg

A classic treatise that defined the field of applied demand analysis, Consumer Demand in the United States: Prices, Income, and Consumption Behavior is now fully updated and expanded for a new generation. Consumption expenditures by households in the United States account for about 70% of America’s GDP. The primary focus in this book is on how households adjust these expenditures in response to changes in price and income. Econometric estimates of price and income elasticities are obtained for an exhaustive array of goods and services using data from surveys conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and aggregate consumption expenditures from the National Income and Product Accounts, providing a better understanding of consumer demand. Practical models for forecasting future price and income elasticities are also demonstrated. Fully revised with over a dozen new chapters and appendices, the book revisits the original Houthakker-Taylor models while examining new material as well, such as the use of quantile regression and the stationarity of consumer preference. It also explores the emerging connection between neuroscience and consumer behavior, integrating the economic literature on demand theory with psychology literature. The most comprehensive treatment of the topic to date, this volume will be an essential resource for any researcher, student or professional economist working on consumer behavior or demand theory, as well as investors and policymakers concerned with the impact of economic fluctuations.

Paul Rogers - A War On Terror, Afghanistan and Aft er (2004).jpg

Paul Rogers is one of the world's leading security experts. Since the September 11 attacks, he has been a regular guest on TV news channels throughout America and Britain, where he has offered expert advice on the real implications of 9/11 and Bush's "war on terror". His articles in newspapers around the world, and in the web journal Open Democracy, have become essential reading for many thousands of people, including government officials, senior military, heads of UN agencies, opinion formers, journalists and peace activists. "A War on Terror" is Paul Roger's radical assessment of Bush's new policy, the way it has affected world security and the grave implications that it holds for future peace, not only in the Middle East but throughout the world. Moving from the war in Afghanistan and its aftermath to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, the continuing development of al-Qaida and its associates through to the war on Iraq, Rogers presents a uniquely cogent analysis of these rapid and traumatic events. In a world in which the US and other states of the Atlantic community are increasingly speaking a different language to that of the majority of the world, Paul Rogers offers a vital critical assessment of the language of dominance and control as "the New American Century" unfolds. For the US, in particular, the post-9/11 world is one in which it is essential to maintain firm control of international security, extending to pre-emptive military action. In this book, Rogers demonstrates how futile, mistaken and deeply counter-productive that belief is, and points the way to more effective routes to a more just and secure world.

Pippa Norris - Public Sentinel, News Media and Gov ernance Reform (2009).jpg

The purpose of this book is to inform governance advisors about the vital role of the news media for governance reform. This book approaches the issue of news media and governance with three broad questions that it attempts to answer on the basis of quantitative data and case studies. First, a normative approach asks: What ideal roles should media systems play to strengthen democratic governance and thus bolster human development? Second, an empirical approach considers independent evidence derived from cross-national comparisons and from selected case studies, asking: Under what conditions do media systems actually succeed or fail to fulfill these objectives? Third, a strategic approach asks: What policy interventions work most effectively to close the substantial gap that exists between the democratic promise and performance of the news media as an institution?

Samuel Willard Crompton - Clara Barton, Humanitari an (2009).jpg

Known as the 'Angel of the Battlefield' for her efforts during the American Civil War, Clara Barton is remembered today as a pioneering nurse and humanitarian. By the end of the 19th century, she was one of the most highly regarded American women on the planet, having brought relief to those suffering in wars and disasters the world over. Frightened as a child, insecure as an adult, and perpetually worried about her image, Barton was a thoroughly modern hero, beset by difficulties, including those of her own making. In "Clara Barton: Humanitarian", read about this brave nurse and founder of the American Red Cross.

Steve Ewing - USS Enterprise (CV-6), The Most Deco rated Ship of World War II - A Pictorial History ( 1982).jpg

This is an excellent book on the first aircraft carrier Enterprise. The Big E was the most decorated ship of World War II and had a charmed life. She fought in nearly all of the major naval battles in the Pacific and was awarded 20 battle stars by the government. The Enterprise was also the only carrier operating in the Pacific for a time during the war. This book has good photos and the information is detailed, without being overwhelming for a basic book.

Jerry Keenan - Encyclopedia of the Spanish-America n and Philippine-American Wars (2001).jpg

We all have read about the Rough Rider gallant charge up San Juan Hill, but the reality is quite different. It was in fact Teddy Roosevelt and Kettle Hill, and the enormous casualties suffered would likely cost Colonel Roosevelt his command today. Now you can quickly consult a new reference work and easily check out the facts and myths of the conflict that propelled the United States onto the world stage as an international and colonial power with the acquisition of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam.

Loring Wirbel - Star Wars, US Tools of Space Supre macy (2003).jpg

The expansion of space militarization forms a common thread with the explicit unilateral empire-building of the Bush administration. But just as Star Wars did not begin with the Missile Defense Agency, preventive war theory did not originate with Donald Rumsfeld. Advocates of military space always were on the front line of those demanding global dominance. Loring Wirbel argues that the seeds for the current space supremacy doctrine were sown at the end of the Cold War, in the early days of the Clinton administration. Examining the evolution of space-based tools, Wirbel shows that missile defense strategy is part of a dangerous US move to wage endless preventive war and demand global supremacy over allies and adversaries alike. Star Wars: US Tools of Space Supremacy provides a fresh look at the role of space as an enabler of the Bush administration's plans for endless preventive war. It debunks the benign notions of missile defence, and expands the definition of space supremacy beyond that of weapons in space, to include the unilateral misuse of space-based intelligence, communications, and targeting technologies.

Charles R. Bowery - Lee & Grant, Profiles in Leade rship from the Battlefields of Virginia (2004).jpg

In the Spring of 1864, the two greatest generals of the Civil War met on the battlegrounds of Virginia to determine the outcome of the war and the future of America. Their actions in the Overland Campaign define the qualities that made them exceptional leaders -- qualities just as relevant in modern business settings.Filled with riveting battlefield scenes, Lee & Grant showcases the generals' legendary skills and illustrates the crucial value of:* persistence: Lee's ability to hold Grant at bay prolonged the survival of the Confederacy.* distinguishing between reverse and defeat: Grant's knack for leveraging tactical defeats toward larger objectives made even Lee admit that Union victory was "a mere question of time."* forming and disseminating a vision, then synchronizing and orchestrating its execution across an entire organization. Grant's ability to mass the power of the Union armies and navies set the conditions for ultimate victory. * "followership," or the ability of a leader to learn and take direction from his or her leader, as Grant did from President Lincoln (and as Lee did from Jefferson Davis)* negotiation skills, which Grant used masterfully in getting Lincoln's support for a radically different military approach.Lee and Grant both exhibited exceptional intelligence, problem-solving skills, and the innate ability to garner the respect of every person in their command. Today's leaders will find an invaluable business asset in their legacy.
