Caroline Joan Picart - From Ballroom To Dancesport , Aesthetics, Athletics, And Body Culture (2006).jpg

An insider explores the transformation of ballroom dance into an Olympic sport.
Drawing on recent media portrayals and her own experience, author and dancer Caroline Joan S. Picart explores ballroom dancing and its more "sporty" equivalent, DanceSport, suggesting that they are reflective of larger social, political, and cultural tensions. The past several years have seen a resurgence in the popularity of ballroom dance as well as an increasing international anxiety over how and whether to transform ballroom into an Olympic sport. Writing as a participant-critic, Picart suggests that both are crucial sites where bodies are packaged as racialized, sexualized, nationalized, and classed objects. In addition, Picart argues, as the choreography, costuming, and genre of ballroom and DanceSport continue to evolve, these theatrical productions are aestheticized and constructed to encourage commercial appeal, using the narrative frame of the competitive melodrama to heighten audience interest.
"I began this book with but a cursory understanding of ballroom dance and a strong understanding of things rhetorical; I ended it with a deep appreciation of the art of ballroom dancing and admiration for the author’s deployment of contemporary critical theory." — David Frank, University of Oregon
"This book on the politics, aesthetics, and cultural underpinnings of ballroom dancing and DanceSport is written by someone who participates in both, and this lends an immediacy and authority to the author. Picart is able to provide a very thoughtful and subtle analysis of how society positions itself on the transformation of an art form into a sport." — Adrian Del Caro, University of Colorado
"Exceptional, remarkable, unique, very well researched, and comprehensible! Picart’s book, From Ballroom to DanceSport, examines the increasing popularity of ballroom and cabaret dancing and the myriad of issues and forces involved internationally in the quest (and debate) for inclusion in the Olympics as dancesport. This book is a ‘must’ read for all students of dance, amateur and professional dancers, those involved in dance media, dance organizations, and all who enjoy social dancing." — Jessie Lovano-Kerr, Florida State University

Shirley Anne Warshaw - The Co-Presidency of Bush a nd Cheney (2009).jpg

The Bush administration is out but the American public continues to suffer from its disastrous domestic and foreign policies. In this excellently documented work, presidential scholar Shirley Anne Warshaw offers an in-depth analysis and exploration of the political maneuvering that got us into our current mess. Combining her study of the motivations of both Dick Cheney and George W. Bush, knowledge of the spheres in which they operated, and personal interviews with White House staff and Washington insiders, Warshaw demonstrates that these complementary conservatives were nothing less than co-presidents. Breaking with popular sentiment, she denies that Bush's authority was hijacked or stolen.Bush, rather, focused on building what he called a moral and civil society, anchored by a war on science and by the proliferation of faith-based programs, while allowing Cheney to lead in business and foreign policy. Warshaw highlights Cheney's decades-long career in Washington and his familiarity with its inner workings to present a complete picture of this calculating political powerhouse who continues to capture headlines. From Cheney's unprecedented merging of the vice president's office into the president's to his abhorrence of what he deemed congressional interference in the president's ability to do his job, Warshaw paints an intriguing, and at times frightening, portrait.

The P-47 — it was known by several names. Officially the Thunderbolt, it was also called the Jug, 'Bolt, T-Bolt, Juggernaut, and names by the Germans that can't be mentioned. The P-47 was the biggest and most heavily armed single-engine fighter developed during World War II. It was also one of the fastest. Several P-47 experimental aircraft topped 507 mph, and several pilots claim to have flown the big fighter to transonic speeds.

William F. Andrews - Airpower Against an Army, Cha llenge and Response in CENTAF's Duel with the Repu blican Guard (1998).jpg

01 - USA1 - William F. Andrews - Airpower Against an Army, Challen...sponse in CENTAFs Duel with the Republican Guard 1998.jpg

Colonel Andrews concentrates on tactical innovation during war. He examines the extent to which USAF doctrine prepared the US Central Command Air Forces (CENTAF) for its mission against the Republican Guard Forces Command (RGFC). He describes how CENTAF adjusted air operations against Iraq's RGFC in the 1990-91 invasion of Kuwait. CENTAF instituted six significant tactical innovations in one week that required its aviators to create new tactics in the midst of combat operations. Colonel Andrews evaluates those innovations because they enabled CENTAF to satisfy theater objectives. He recommends that the Air Force identify means to measure air operations against land forces during peacetime because the press of war does not provide time for reflection and analysis.

Neal Pease - Poland, the United States, and the St abilization of Europe, 1919-1933 (1986).jpg

In the eyes of the world, no European country appeared more vulnerable to its enemies or less likely to establish peace with them than inter-war Poland. This is the first full-length study of relations between Poland and the U.S. following World War I, as Poland turned to America to buttress its precarious position. Pease lucidly examines how Polish leaders of the 1920s, discerning America's essential aim of fostering stability in Europe, sought to enlist U.S. political and financial support on behalf of their beleaguered state. Drawing on exhaustive archival research, Pease unravels the fascinating ties between these unlikely diplomatic partners. He reveals how Poland not only had to fight an uphill battle against inter-war America's isolationism, but also had to counter America's reluctance to underwrite a nation surrounded by two strong and hostile neighbors, Germany and the Soviet Union. Poland's plea for political and financial backing was ultimately denied by both the White House and Wall Street with dire consequences for Poland's future and Europe's fragile peace. Authoritative and original, this book is valuable contribution to our understanding of America and Europe during the interwar years.

Robert D. Schulzinger - U.S. Diplomacy Since 1900 (2001).jpg

U.S. Diplomacy Since 1900 has long been admired as the most comprehensive and accessible survey available. Now in its fifth edition, the book traces the major events in the history of U.S. foreign relations, from the Spanish-American War to the present. Schulzinger explains how U.S. foreign policy is made and discusses public ideas about foreign relations. The engaging narrative places U.S. foreign relations in the context of the growing interdependence and globalization of international affairs. Updated to include a complete account of the Clinton administration, this new edition provides balanced coverage of both the Clinton and Bush administrations' efforts to deal with the extraordinary changes in international affairs after the Cold War. New material has been added on the ways in which Americans remember the Vietnam War, and the selected bibliography has undergone its most extensive revisions since the book was first published. In this text, students will find the most recent scholarship, much of which has been informed by insights from related disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. Distinguished by its combination of narrative and analysis and by its in-depth explanations of how and why policy is made, the fifth edition of U.S. Diplomacy Since 1900 is an invaluable resource for students of diplomatic history, foreign relations, and political science.

Frank J. Williams, William D. Pederson - Lincoln L essons, Reflections on America's Greatest Leader (2009).jpg

This title provides personal reflections on Lincoln's life and legacy. In "Lincoln Lessons", seventeen of today's most respected academics, historians, lawyers, and politicians provide candid reflections on the importance of Abraham Lincoln in their intellectual lives. Their essays, gathered by editors Frank J. Williams and William D. Pederson, shed new light on this political icon's remarkable ability to lead and inspire two hundred years after his birth. Collected here are glimpses into Lincoln's unique ability to transform enemies into steadfast allies, his deeply ingrained sense of morality and intuitive understanding of humanity, his civil deification as the first assassinated American president, and his controversial suspension of habeas corpus during the Civil War. The contributors also discuss Lincoln's influence on today's emerging democracies, his lasting impact on African American history, and his often-overlooked international legend - his power to instigate change beyond the boundaries of his native nation. While some contributors provide a scholarly look at Lincoln and some take a more personal approach, all explore his formative influence in their lives. What emerges is the true history of his legacy in the form of first-person testaments from those whom he has touched deeply. "Lincoln Lessons" brings together some of the best voices of our time in a unique combination of memoir and history. This singular volume of original essays is a tribute to the enduring inspirational powers of an extraordinary man whose courage and leadership continue to change lives today.

Don L. Hofsommer - Minneapolis and the Age of Rail ways (2005).jpg

In Minneapolis and the Age of Railways, Don Hofsommer presents Minneapolis from the 1860s into the 1950s, when railroads served as a unique link between city and countryside. Rails carried wheat and helped make Minneapolis the flour milling capital of the world; brought logs to Minneapolis to be processed into lumber that built towns and farms across the prairies; and delivered coal and all manner of manufactured goods and merchandise to Minneapolis, its vast hinterland to the north and west, and beyond to the Rockies and the Pacific, making the growth of America’s northern heartland possible. Railroads also provided efficient, long-distance transportation for hundreds of thousands of people who traveled via Minneapolis. The Milwaukee Road and Great Northern passenger terminals in Minneapolis were vibrant places—the heart of the city—pumping passengers, mail, and express parcels into the nation’s steel-rail cardiovascular system.

Illustrated with more than 200 period photographs and maps detailing the city and the tracks that crossed it, this remarkable book reflects a time not so long ago when the locomotive dominated the landscape and set the tempo for the nation—the age of railways.

Doveanna S. Fulton - Speaking Power, Black Feminis t Orality In Women's Narratives Of Slavery (2006).jpg

Analyzes Black women’s rhetorical strategies in both autobiographical and fictional narratives of slavery.
In Speaking Power, DoVeanna S. Fulton explores and analyzes the use of oral traditions in African American women’s autobiographical and fictional narratives of slavery. African American women have consistently employed oral traditions not only to relate the pain and degradation of slavery, but also to celebrate the subversions, struggles, and triumphs of Black experience. Fulton examines orality as a rhetorical strategy, its role in passing on family and personal history, and its ability to empower, subvert oppression, assert agency, and create representations for the past. In addition to taking an insightful look at obscure or little-studied slave narratives like Louisa Picquet, the Octoroon and the Narrative of Sojourner Truth, Fulton also brings a fresh perspective to more familiar works, such as Harriet Jacobs’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl and Harriet Wilson’s Our Nig, and highlights Black feminist orality in such works as Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God and Gayl Jones’s Corregidora.
"In this book, Fulton provides an engaging and pedagogically commanding investigation of the interconnection between Black women’s oral agency and literary representation. Her study documents and celebrates the oral continuum that describes the merger of African American folk and literary cultures. Speaking Power emerges as a point of reference for nineteenth-, twentieth-, and twenty-first-century African American literary analysis." — Joyce A. Joyce, author of Black Studies as Human Studies: Critical Essays and Interviews

Cresson H. Kearny - Nuclear War Survival Skills, U pdated and Expanded (1987).jpg

There are a number of do-it-yourself guides to civil defense available, but most seem to be aimed at hard-core survivalists who have crack outdoor skills, and lots of specialized equipment. This book is very different and is written for the average citizen by a former U.S. Army officer, field geologist and civil engineer who built and field-tested the "expedient" shelters described within while still employed at the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory. These shelters can be put togeather within a few hours by ordinary, untrained men and women. (It is a good idea to take a weekend and practice building them.) They provide good protection during the weeks it may take for fallout to decay to negligible levels of radioactivity. (Expedient blast shelters, which also protect against the shockwave from a nearby explosion, are also discussed. ) The author is clear and thorough throughout, supplying checklists for supplies, equipment and materials; detailed building instructions and descriptions of the genuine (as opposed to fanciful) effects of nuclear weapons. There is also a valuable discussion of the purchase and use of potassium iodide compounds for protection of the thyroid gland from absorption of radioiodine. Finally, detailed plans and instructions are provided for the construction and use of a homemade fallout meter (!) to indicate radiation levels. (It is a lot more accurate than many of the over-priced, defective-or-uncalibrated war-surplus "Geiger counters" on the market!)

01 - USA1 - Michael C. Howard, John E. King - The Rise of Neoliber...nced Capitalist Economies, A Materialist Analysis 2008.jpg

This book is a strikingly original and provocative interpretation of the rise of neoliberalism, drawing on the principles of historical materialism. It explains why the rise of neoliberalism didn't happen until the 1970s. It presents controversial argument on causes behind the development of neoliberalism. Authors have strong reputations and have been collaborating for thirty years including the History of Marxian Economics, volumes 1 and 2 (published by Palgrave)In this unique and dramatic account of the rise of neoliberalism, Howard and King consider the major features of historical materialism, the factors which resulted in Nineteenth and Twentieth century thinkers incorrectly predicting the long-term decline of the market, and the prospects for a reversal of neoliberalism in the Twenty-first century.
