Putting into question the conventional view that the military is detrimental to democratic development, Dolman provides a multifaceted examination of the institutional incentives of the military and its relations with civilian authorities. Drawing on classical political theory, a wide range of historical examples, and statistical findings, The Warrior State argues that the military can facilitate democracy as the result of specific norms and conditions that focus on individual action. Ironically, this may be best inculcated through a focus on the offensive, precisely the military doctrine commonly seen as most likely to result in international conflict. The paradox of offensive strategies possibly increasing international conflict while also enhancing democracy, which is supposed to decrease such conflict, form a core of this provocative book.

Charles E. Stuart - Never Trust a Local, Inside Ni xon's Campaign And the White House (2005).jpg

The agony and excitement of the 2004 Presidential campaign between Bush and Kerry echoed the mad frenzy of earlier, low-tech campaigns. In important ways, little has really changed in the fundamental nature of presidential campaigns, presidential politics, and presidential lives. In these pages, a Nixon man shares incidents and anecdotes that illuminate the inner workings of a presidential campaign and life in the White House, revealing touching moments and flashes of personality from the controversial Nixon years. These are small items, some serious, some humorous; telling little moments not likely to be addressed in the writings of more famous authors. This is a collection of the stories that contribute to the drama of a campaign, of views from Pennsylvania Avenue, and with them some opinions on several White House personalities.

Mike Hill, John R. Beitling - B-24 Liberators of t he 15th Air Force-49th Bomb Wing in World War II ( 2005).jpg

The first in a planned series that presents the B-24 Liberators used by the 15th Air Force in World War II, noted B-24 historians Robert Beitling and Mike Hill present for the first time the biographies of the individual B-24s used by the 451st, 461st and 484th Bomb Groups of the 49th Bomb Wing in Italy. As much information as is known about the individual aircraft is presented in biographical form: serial number, nickname, how the aircraft received its nickname, number of missions, original aircraft for the groups, and the ultimate fate of the aircraft. The volume will be of interest to historians, veterans and those who are interested in the B-24s that flew in the flak filled skies of the Third Reich.

Steve Pace - F-22 Raptor, America's Next Lethal Wa r Machine (1999).jpg

The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, about to be launched as America's premier Air Dominance Fighter, will replace the vaunted F-15C Eagle as the world's foremost fighter aircraft. Once operational, it will be the swiftest, stealthiest, and deadliest plane in the skies, ready to out fly and out fight any opponent. Its Supercruise feature allows it to exceed the speed of sound without afterburners-an aviation first. Its radar profile is nearly as small as that of the stealth-dedicated F-117A Nighthawk. And its First-Look, First-Kill capability makes it virtually impervious to enemy counter-strike. Profusely illustrated, this eye-opening volume documents every stage of our military's quest for the next Air dominance Fighter, while illuminating every aspect of the fierce warbird that ended that search...the F-22 Raptor. From drawing board to wind tunnel, test flight to tactical deployment, here is the most extensive survey available today of the fighter that will escort our armed forces into the 21st Century.

Gawdat G. Bahgat - American Oil Diplomacy in the P ersian Gulf and the Caspian Sea (2003).jpg

The United States is the world's largest oil consumer and importer. This work examines the nation's growing dependence on fossil fuels - particularly oil - and the main challenges it faces in securing supplies from two energy-rich regions, the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea. The author argues that long-term US energy strategy must be built on diversity of both the fuel mix and the geographic origin of that fuel. It should include a broad combination of measures that would stimulate domestic production, provide incentives for conservation, promote clean technologies, and eliminate political barriers to world markets. Gawdat Bahgat also contends, however, that the goal should not be energy independence, but finding new ways of managing dependence on oil supplies from abroad. He maintains that despite increasing reservoirs of oil and natural gas throughout the world, including the Caspian Sea, the Persian Gulf will continue to be the main source of US fossil fuel. Bahgat analyses both recent and historical challenges to the relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil producer and exporter, including the Arab-Israeli peace process. He also discusses the hostility between the United States and Iraq and the tense relationship between the United States and Iran, analysing such sensitive topics as the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and terrorism, as well as developments in the wake of September 11, 2001. In his assessment of the underdeveloped Caspian Sea reservoir, Bahgat suggests that energy experts and policy makers have exaggerated the region's potential, citing logistical, economic and political obstacles that must be overcome before the region plays a major role in producing fossil fuels. These obstacles include domestic ethnic divisions, disputes over the legal status of the Caspian, disagreements over the most cost-effective transportation routes, and changes in the region in the aftermath of the war on terrorism.

James Blight, Janet M. Lang, David A. Welch - Viet nam If Kennedy Had Lived, Virtual JFK (2009).jpg

Tackling head-on the most controversial and debated what if in U.S. foreign policy, this provocative work explores what President John F. Kennedy would have done in Vietnam had he not been assassinated in 1963. Drawing on a wealth of recently declassified documents, frank oral testimony of White House officials from both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and the analysis of top historians, this book presents compelling evidence that JFK was ready to end U.S. involvement well before the conflict escalated. With vivid immediacy, readers will feel they are in the president's war room as the debates raged that forever changed the course of American history and continue to affect us profoundly as the shadows of Vietnam stretch into Iraq.

Earle E Partridge - Air Interdiction In WWII, Kore a and Vietnam (2005).jpg

In discussing their experiences in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, these generals focus on those air campaigns which have come to be considered classics of air interdiction: In World War II, Operation Strangle in Italy, March-May 1944, and operations in support of the Normandy Invasion, April-June 1944; in the Korean War, all campaigns, especially Operation Strangle, May- October 1951; in the Vietnam War; the air interdiction part of the Rolling Thunder campaign, March 1965-November 1968, the air campaign in Southern Laos, 1965-1972, and especially the air interdiction portions of Linebacker I and II, May-October and December 1972. In addition, the discussion turns to the impact of electronics-laser guided weapons, electronic suppression devices, drone airplanes and immediate air intelligence-on air interdiction operations. Generals Partridge, Smart, and Vogt offer definitions, clarifications, examples, generalizations, and advice.

Gale Group - Modern American Literature, Volume 1. A-G (1998).jpg

This work consists of short excerpts of criticism of 20th-century American authors by important critics writing in newspapers, magazines, scholarly journals, and books. The excerpts (ranging in length from one or two paragraphs to two columns) are allowed to stand on their own without separate plot synopses, summaries, or background information on the authors. The original words of the critics (often great writers themselves with their own entries) are arranged chronologically to paint a picture of the critical reception of an author over time. Although this work can be viewed as an abbreviated or minimalist version of Gale's Contemporary Literary Criticism and Twentieth Century Literary Criticism, it is easier to use because all authors are arranged in simple alphabetical order in three volumes. Because it shuns summaries, commentary, and other student-centered features of the Gale products, however, it will be less helpful to high school students and undergraduates than those works. This new fifth edition consolidates earlier editions (1960, 1976, 1985, 1997) and adds 70 new entries, bringing the total number of authors covered to 489. For public and academic libraries.

Italeri team - Staghound Mk.I (2007).jpg

For a strange twist of fate, the T17E1 Staghound was never operated by its intended user, the U.S.Army. Nevertheless, between 2,600 and 2,900 vehicles were produced, and took part in World War II wearing the colours of several Commonwealth armies. After the war, Staghounds were supplied to Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Denmark, Egypt, Honduras, India, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Switzerland. This photographic reference manual with history, technical details and color profiles is a part of Italeri kit 6459.

01 - USA1 - James Hudnut-Beumler - In Pursuit of the Almightys Dol...ar, A History of Money and American Protestantism 2009.jpg

Every day of the week in contemporary America (and especially on Sundays) people raise money for their religious enterprises--for clergy, educators, buildings, charity, youth-oriented work, and more. In a fascinating look into the economics of American Protestantism, James Hudnut-Beumler examines how churches have raised and spent money from colonial times to the present and considers what these practices say about both religion and American culture.
