From 1980 to 1992, Maoist Shining Path rebels, Peruvian state forces, and Andean peasants waged a bitter civil war that left some 69,000 people dead. Using archival research and oral interviews, Before the Shining Path is the first long-term historical examination of the Shining Path's political, economic, and social antecedents in Ayacucho, the department where the Shining Path initiated its war. This study uncovers rural Ayacucho's vibrant but largely unstudied twentieth-century political history and contends that the Shining Path was the last and most extreme of a series of radical political movements that indigenous peasants pursued.
The Shining Path's violence against rural indigenous populations exposed the tight hold of anti-Indian prejudice inside Peru, as rebels reproduced the same hatreds they aimed to defeat. But, this was nothing new. Heilman reveals that minute divides inside rural indigenous communities repeatedly led to violent conflict across the twentieth century.

Examines the growth and transformation of the Middle East economy during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The text looks at how the region's economic structures were fundamentally altered by the growing impact of European trade and finance, and by the internal reforms of the rulers of Egypt. It also examines in detail the impact of this process on the four central areas of the Middle East. The result, the author argues, was the creation of a fixed pattern of agricultural, industrial and financial activity. The states formed after the collapse of teh Ottoman Empire found that altering this pattern in their attempts to promote a less dependent form of development was frought with difficulty; and the problems they faced and their different approaches are still highly relevant to the Middle East's economic development today.

Karl Albert Frickhinger - Fossil Atlas, Fishes (19 96).jpg

Frickhinger is the founder of a specialized pharmaceutical company in Germany and a lifelong student of paleontology. His latest book, Fossil Atlas: Fishes, translated from the German, is a massive work of scholarship. According to the author, fish fossils have not been well surveyed in paleontological reference works. Attempting to remedy this neglect, he visited 60 leading paleontology museums in Europe, Australia, South Africa, Russia, and the U.S. as well as 18 private collections. Taking hundreds of photographs and consulting with numerous experts, he compiled this atlas, which will be of interest to scientists, students, museum curators, and amateur fossil collectors.
The introductory pages include interesting expositions on collecting, photography, evolution, external features of fishes, and systematics. European and English fossil-classification systems differ, so with the help of several experts Frickhinger developed his own system for this book to detail the various classes, orders, and families. The text of the book is arranged in the order of this classification system.
The top of the page of a typical one-page entry notes class, order, and family. A color photograph illustrates each entry, and a caption describes the size of the fish, where the fossil was discovered, and what museum now owns it. Genus information is given with a citation to a printed authority and a list of synonymous names. Geological range is provided (e.g., Middle Devonian, Middle Miocene), geographic distribution is noted, and a features section describes the anatomy of the fossil fish. A remarks section notes miscellaneous facts (e.g., freshwater, predator). Lastly, recent relatives are noted, and a line drawing shows the reconstructed fish. About 900 color photographs illustrate the text. Most cover approximately one-half page, but occasionally a full-page photograph accompanies an entry. Also, throughout the text are small color photographs of living fish. A bibliography lists the monographs and journals cited in entries. Concluding the volume are five indexes: by name, order, formations, localities, and recent relatives.
There are several large reference works on fossils but nothing comparable to this specialized work. The number of entries, organization, and photograph quality make this a significant paleontologic reference that academic and public libraries should consider adding to their collections.

Framed by an understanding that the very concept of what defines the human is often influenced by Renaissance and early modern texts, this book establishes the beginning of the literary development of the satanic form into a humanized form in the seventeenth century. This development is centered on characters and poetry of four seventeenth-century writers: the Satan character in John Milton's Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, the Tempter in John Bunyan's Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners and Diabolus in Bunyan's The Holy War, the poetry of John Wilmot, earl of Rochester, and Dorimant in George Etherege's Man of Mode. The initial understanding of this development is through a sequential reading of Milton and Bunyan which examines the Satan character as an archetype-in-the-making, building upon each to work so that the character metamorphoses from a groveling serpent and fallen archangel to a humanized form embodying the human impulses necessary to commit evil. Rosenfeld then argues that this development continues in Restoration literature, showing that both Rochester and Etherege build upon their literary predecessors to develop the satanic figure towards greater humanity. Ultimately she demonstrates that these writers, taken collectively, have imbued Satan with the characteristics that define the human. This book includes as an epilogue a discussion of Samson in Milton's Samson Agonistes as a later seventeenth-century avatar of the humanized satanic form, providing an example for understanding a stock literary character in the light of early modern texts.

This volume charts a course through never-before-surveyed historical territory: Japan’s medieval population, a topic so challenging that neither Japanese nor foreign scholars have investigated it in a comprehensive way. And yet, demography is an invaluable approach to the past because it provides a way—often the only way—to study the mass of people who did not belong to the political or religious elite. By synthesizing a vast cache of primary and secondary sources, William Wayne Farris constructs an important analysis of Japan’s population from 1150 to 1600 and considers social and economic developments that were life and death issues for ordinary Japanese. Impressive in his grasp of detail and the scope of his inquiry, Farris makes the argument that, although this age initially witnessed the continuation of a centuries-old demographic stasis, a far-reaching transformation began around 1280 and eventually gained momentum until it swept through the Japanese archipelago. Between 1280 and 1600, Japan’s population approximately trebled, growing from 6 million to 17 million. Crucial to the demographic breakthrough was the resolution of two central problems facing both the rulers and the ruled. The first was how to supply a burgeoning population with sufficient food; the second, how to keep the peace.

Far from disintegrating under the strain, as many historians have argued, this book shows that the German family maintained and even strengthened the emotional bonds that tied its members together. Entering the war shaped, moulded and directed by the massive pressures brought to bear on it by Nazism's attempt to recast German society in its own image, the German family resisted these pressures and emerged at the end of the war in a new and stronger form, surviving the manifold problems of reunion and readjustment to the postwar, post-Nazi world with a surprising degree of resilience.

“‘Idiots!’ he yelled. ‘You think I sold a Vermeer to that fat Goering. But it’s not a Vermeer. I painted it myself!”’ With lines like that, it’s clear Dolnick has found the nonfiction equivalent of a Vermeer, buried under other (and more hackneyed) tales of World War II. Critics had nothing but praise for this book, noting that Van Meegeren raised a number of questions about the value of art, especially when the same art critics who had clasped the fake Vermeers to their chests later mocked them as obvious, ugly fakes. At a time when art museums are taking in record crowds, The Forger’s Spell will undoubtedly cause many a viewer to squint a bit closer at the “masterpiece” hanging on the wall.

Heresy was the most feared crime in the medieval moral universe. It was seen as a social disease capable of poisoning the body politic and shattering the unity of the church. The study of heresy in late medieval England has, to date, focused largely on the heretics. In consequence, we know very little about how this crime was defined by the churchmen who passed authoritative judgement on it.
By examining the drafting, publicizing, and implementing of new laws against heresy in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, using published and unpublished judicial records, this book presents the first general study of inquisition in medieval England. In it Ian Forrest argues that because heresy was a problem simultaneously national and local, detection relied upon collaboration between rulers and the ruled. While involvement in detection brought local society into contact with the apparatus of government, uneducated laymen still had to be kept at arm's length, because judgements about heresy were deemed too subtle and important to be left to them. Detection required bishops and inquisitors to balance reported suspicions against canonical proof, and threats to public safety against the rights of the suspect and the deficiencies of human justice.
At present, the character and significance of heresy in late medieval England is the subject of much debate. Ian Forrest believes that this debate has to be informed by a greater awareness of the legal and social contexts within which heresy took on its many real and imagined attributes.

Wiceadmirał Reinhard Scheer dał rozkaz „cała naprzód" z kominów 22 pancerników buchnęły kłęby czarnego dymu. Na przedzie mknęły cztery pancerniki typu JCónig. Dzięki turbinom osiągały prędkość znacznie wyższą niż okręty napędzane silnikami tłokowymi. Gdzieś na przedzie krążowniki liniowe z grupy rozpoznania {Aufklarungsgruppe) wiceadmirała Franza Hippcra toczyły bitwę pościgową z brytyjskimi krążownikami liniowymi i jedną eskadrą drednotów. Była to jedyna w swoim rodzaju okazja, na którą Scheer i jego flota czekali przez całą swoją karierę. Od roku 1914 Niemcy, nic mogąc liczyć na wygraną ze znacznie liczniejszą flotą brytyjską, mieli nadzieję, że uda im się zaskoczyć i zniszczyć eskadrę okrętów brytyjskich operującą samodzielnie. Właśnie teraz była ku temu okazja. Pancerniki niemieckie zaczęły już ostrzeliwać z daleka pancerniki brytyjskie. Brytyjczycy zmienili kurs i ruszyli całą naprzód na północ. Jeden celny strzał zdałby ich na łaskę i niełaskę niemieckiej Floty Pełnomorskiej. Na mostku kapitańskim okrętu flagowego Scheera, pancernika „Friedrich der Grosse", panował nastrój radosnego wyczekiwania.
