Janet Grat - Race and Time, American Women's Poeti cs from Antislavery to Racial Modernity (2004).jpg

Race and Time urges our attention to women’s poetry in considering the cultural history of race. Building on close readings of well-known and less familiar poets—including Elizabeth Margaret Chandler, Sarah Louisa Forten, Hannah Flagg Gould, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Sarah Piatt, Mary Eliza Tucker Lambert, Sarah Josepha Hale, Eliza Follen, and Mary Mapes Dodge—Janet Gray traces tensions in women’s literary culture from the era of abolitionism to the rise of the Plantation tradition. She devotes a chapter to children’s verse, arguing that racial stereotypes work as "nonsense" that masks conflicts in the construction of white childhood. A compilation of the poems cited, most of which are difficult to find elsewhere, is included as an appendix.Gray clarifies the cultural roles women’s poetry played in the nineteenth-century United States and also reveals that these poems offer a fascinating, dynamic, and diverse field for students of social and cultural history. Gray’s readings provide a rich sense of the contexts in which this poetry is embedded and examine its aesthetic and political vitality in meticulous detail, linking careful explication of the texts with analysis of the history of poetry, canons, literacy, and literary authority.Race and Time distinguishes itself from other critical studies not only through its searching, in-depth readings but also through its sustained attention to less known poets and its departure from a Dickinson-centered model. Most significantly, it offers a focus on race, demonstrating how changes in both the U.S. racial structure and women’s place in public culture set the terms for change in how women poets envisioned the relationship between poetry and social power.

Jerry Taylor - Last Out, 4Rar-Nz (Anzac) Battalion 's Second Tour in Vietnam.jpg

How did infantry and armour attack a Viet Cong bunker system? What was it that persuaded men to go forward to possible death or wounding, when all their instincts told them that safety lay behind them? Who were the aggressive enemy they faced, and how were they organized, armed, equipped and resupplied? And what were the skills, tactics and techniques needed to live, fight and survive on the jungle battlefield of Vietnam? This is the story of the training and preparation for war of 4RAR/NZ (ANZAC) Battalion and the Australians and New Zealanders who made up this outstanding infantry battalion in 1970-71. Stand beside the commanders and men as they go into battle; toil with them under their loads of weapons and equipment; and experience through their eyes everything from the one-on-one contact between two opposing scouts, to set-piece attacks into enemy bunker systems supported by tanks, armoured personnel carriers, artillery and aircraft. When the Battalion makes contact with the 33 North Vietnamese Army regiment, follow the 14-hour action minute to minute, and wait in the dark with the surrounded men of ANZAC for the enemy's final attack. This is the account of the last battles fought by Australians and New Zealanders in the Vietnam War.

Kevin J. Middlebrook, Carlos Rico - The United Sta tes and Latin America in the 1980s (1986).jpg

This work provides an up-to-date view of Latin America politically, economically, and internationally in terms of its relations with the United States, and where it is likely to find itself in the short term. The strength of the book, which is divided into four sections covering such timely subjects as debt, human rights, security, trade, and migration, lies with the breadth of views presented, the quality of the scholarship, and the imaginative and sometimes highly critical commentaries. A valuable source for the pros and cons of the most contentious interpretations currently in vogue among academic and government experts. Recommended for most libraries. Roderic A. Camp, Latin American Studies Dept., Central Coll., Pella, Ia.

W.J. Rorabaugh - Berkeley at War, The 1960s (1990).jpg

Berkeley, California stood at the center of the political, social, and cultural upheaval that made the 1960s a unique period in American history. In Berkeley at War, W.J. Rorabaugh, who attended the graduate school of the University of California at Berkeley in the 1970s, presents a lively, informative account of the events that changed forever what had once been a quiet, conservative white suburb.Rorabaugh's meticulously researched, authoritative narrative covers the entire period, from the rise of the Free Speech Movement to the growth and increasing militance of a black community struggling to end segregation; from the emergence of radicalism and the anti-war movement to the blossoming "hippie" culture; and from the explosive conflict over People's Park to the beginnings of modern-day feminism and environmentalism. An invaluable account of its time and place, Berkeley at War anchors the sixties in American history, both before and since that colorful decade.

USA Books1 - Darwyn H. Lumley - Breaking the Banks in Motor City, T...oit Banking Crisis and the Start of the New Deal 2009.jpg

This history tells the relatively unknown story of how the Detroit automobile industry played a major role in the 1933 banking crisis and the subsequent New Deal reforms that drastically changed the financial industry. Spurred by failed decision making by automobile industry leaders, Detroit banks experienced a critical emergency, precipitating the federal closure of banks on March 4, 1933, the first in a series of actions by which the federal government acquired power over economics previously held by states and private industrial andfinancial interests.

Richard L. Bushman - From Puritan to Yankee, Chara cter and the Social Order in Connecticut, 1690-176 5 (1980).jpg

USA Books1 - Richard L. Bushman - From Puritan to Yankee, Character...r and the Social Order in Connecticut, 1690-1765 1980.jpg

Employing his special training in psychology to advantage, Bushman has skillfully woven into his description and analysis of Connecticut society in the process of change, a bold interpretation of the impact of change upon individual character formation...The author has made a signal contribution to the history of liberty in America. (William and Mary Quarterly )

At the heart of history lies a vague but undeniable substance known as 'national character' or 'social character'...Richard L. Bushman has had the courage to offer his version of the evolution of the social character of Connecticut...The boldness of the attempt alone would make Puritan to Yankee an important book, but it is the general accuracy of its author's perception of the way the mechanism of historical change operates and the specific accuracy 0f his assessment of the results that makes the book one of the most fruitful historical studies produced in the last few years in any field of history. (History and Theory )

Professor Bushman's study of eighteenth-century Connecticut is a first-rate job of social history. He deals with large questions in satisfying detail...Energy in research is combined with courage in writing. (New England Quarterly )

Brian K. Burton - Extraordinary Circumstances, The Seven Days Battles (2001).jpg

Extraordinary Circumstances tells the story of the Seven Days Battles, the first campaign in the Civil War in which Robert E. Lee led the Army of Northern Virginia. Listed by J. F .C. Fuller as one of the 51 decisive military campaigns in Western history, the Seven Days were fought in the area south-east of the Confederate capitol of Richmond from June 25 to July 1, 1862. Lee and his fellow officers, including "Stonewall" Jackson, James Longstreet, A. P. Hill, and D. H. Hill, pushed George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac from the gates of Richmond to the James River. Along the way, Lee lost several opportunities to harm McClellan severely, but the Union forces, marching all night and fighting during the day, managed to reach safety. The campaign lifted Southern spirits, began Lee's ascent to fame, and almost prompted European recognition of the Confederacy. The Seven Days also began a string of events leading to the Emancipation Proclamation and the shift toward total war. McClellan's defeat meant his dream of bringing the United States together as it was before the outbreak of the war was gone forever, and the country's very nature changed as a result.

Hongshan Li - U.S.-China Educational Exchange, Sta te, Society, and Intercultural Relations, 1905-195 0.jpg

U.S. - China relations became increasingly important and complex in the twentieth century. While economic, political, and military interactions all grew over time, the most dramatic expansion took place in educational exchange, turning it into the strongest tie between the two nations. By the end of the 1940s, tens of thousands of Chinese and American students and scholars had crisscrossed the Pacific, leaving indelible marks on both societies. Although all exchange programs were terminated during the cold war, the two nations reemerged as top partners within a decade after the reestablishment of diplomatic relations. Approaching U.S. - China relations from a unique and usually overlooked perspective, Hongshan Li reveals that both the drastic expansion and complete termination of educational ties between the two nations in the first half of the twentieth century were largely the results of direct and deep intervention from the American and Chinese governments. Benefiting from government support and collaboration, educational exchange succeeded in diffusing knowledge and improving mutual understanding between the two peoples across the divide of civilizations. However, the visible hand of government also proved to be most destructive to the development of healthy intercultural relations when educational interactions were treated merely as an instrument for crisis management.
