In our rapidly advancing scientific and technological world, many take great pride and comfort in believing that we are on the threshold of new ways of thinking, living, and understanding ourselves. But despite dramatic discoveries that appear in every way to herald the future, legacies still carry great weight. Even in swiftly developing fields such as health and medicine, most systems and policies embody a sequence of earlier ideas and preexisting patterns.

In History and Health Policy in the United States, seventeen leading scholars of history, the history of medicine, bioethics, law, health policy, sociology, and organizational theory make the case for the usefulness of history in evaluating and formulating health policy today. In looking at issues as varied as the consumer economy, risk, and the plight of the uninsured, the contributors uncover the often unstated assumptions that shape the way we think about technology, the role of government, and contemporary medicine. They show how historical perspectives can help policymakers avoid the pitfalls of partisan, outdated, or merely fashionable approaches, as well as how knowledge of previous systems can offer alternatives when policy directions seem unclear.
Together, the essays argue that it is only by knowing where we have been that we can begin to understand health services today or speculate on policies for tomorrow.

Fergus M. Bordewich - Bound for Canaan, The Epic S tory of the Underground Railroad, America's First Civil Rights Movement (2006).jpg

USA Books1 - Fergus M. Bordewich - Bound for Canaan, The Epic Stor...d Railroad, Americas First Civil Rights Movement 2006.jpg

An important book of epic scope on America's first racially integrated, religiously inspired movement for change

The civil war brought to a climax the country's bitter division. But the beginnings of slavery's denouement can be traced to a courageous band of ordinary Americans, black and white, slave and free, who joined forces to create what would come to be known as the Underground Railroad, a movement that occupies as romantic a place in the nation's imagination as the Lewis and Clark expedition. The true story of the Underground Railroad is much more morally complex and politically divisive than even the myths suggest. Against a backdrop of the country's westward expansion arose a fierce clash of values that was nothing less than a war for the country's soul. Not since the American Revolution had the country engaged in an act of such vast and profound civil disobedience that not only challenged prevailing mores but also subverted federal law.

Bound for Canaan tells the stories of men and women like David Ruggles, who invented the black underground in New York City; bold Quakers like Isaac Hopper and Levi Coffin, who risked their lives to build the Underground Railroad; and the inimitable Harriet Tubman. Interweaving thrilling personal stories with the politics of slavery and abolition, Bound for Canaan shows how the Underground Railroad gave birth to this country's first racially integrated, religiously inspired movement for social change.

Gail Guthrie Valaskakis - Indian Country, Essays o n Contemporary Native Culture (2005).jpg

Since first contact, Natives and newcomers have been involved in an increasingly complex struggle over power and identity. Modern “Indian wars” are fought over land and treaty rights, artistic appropriation, and academic analysis, while Native communities struggle among themselves over membership, money, and cultural meaning. In cultural and political arenas across North America, Natives enact and newcomers protest issues of traditionalism, sovereignty, and self-determination. In these struggles over domination and resistance, over different ideologies and Indian identities, neither Natives nor other North Americans recognize the significance of being rooted together in history and culture, or how representations of “Indianness” set them in opposition to each other.

In Indian Country: Essays on Contemporary Native Culture, Gail Guthrie Valaskakis uses a cultural studies approach to offer a unique perspective on Native political struggle and cultural conflict in both Canada and the United States. She reflects on treaty rights and traditionalism, media warriors, Indian princesses, powwow, museums, art, and nationhood. According to Valaskakis, Native and non-Native people construct both who they are and their relations with each other in narratives that circulate through art, anthropological method, cultural appropriation, and Native reappropriation. For Native peoples and Others, untangling the past—personal, political, and cultural—can help to make sense of current struggles over power and identity that define the Native experience today.

Grounded in theory and threaded with Native voices and evocative descriptions of “Indian” experience (including the author’s), the essays interweave historical and political process, personal narrative, and cultural critique. This book is an important contribution to Native studies that will appeal to anyone interested in First Nations’ experience and popular culture.

lan Allport - Franklin Delano Roosevelt (2003).jpg

Gr 5-7-Two entries in yet another biographical series about U.S. presidents. Both authors follow similar, matter-of-fact writing styles in six chapters that discuss childhoods, upbringing, events that influenced their views, issues and accomplishments during their respective administrations, deaths, and legacies. The slightly dense but clear texts are broken up with photographs and pull quotes. Each book begins with the same eloquent foreword by Walter Cronkite on the U.S. presidency in general, its power both nationally and internationally, and how the Constitution's original definition of the role has been interpreted and challenged over the years.

Michael Foley - Harry S. Truman (2003).jpg

Gr 7-10-Foley opens with a biographical chapter examining his subject's successes and failures before concluding that Truman was a "hardworking, dedicated, decent American." He then looks at the enormity of the challenges the nation faced upon Roosevelt's death, and provides chapter-long discussions of Truman's decision to use the atomic bomb, his difficulties in managing the conversion to a peacetime economy, his 1948 election triumph, his Fair Deal proposals, and the rise of McCarthyism. The treatment is objective, admiring the president's honesty and industriousness, but also pointing out his inadequate preparation for the office and the missteps and gaffes that affected his popularity with the American electorate. Average-quality, black-and-white photos and quotes from Truman supplement the text, and sidebars provide additional information. This book provides adequate, if somewhat dry, discussions of Truman's life and presidential decisions, but Jeffrey B. Morris's The Truman Way (Lerner, 1994; o.p.) offers more background information in a more readable writing style and is a better choice for this audience. Laura K. Egendorf's Harry S. Truman (Greenhaven, 2001), which provides both biographical information and an opposing-viewpoints-style discussion and analysis, is another solid purchase.

Heather Lehr Wagner - Thomas Jefferson (2003).jpg

Thomas Jefferson is remembered as the author of the Declaration of Independence, the document that outlined the hopes of the American Revolution and the aims for a system of government based on the principles of equality and basic human rights. Jefferson's accomplishments, however, extend beyond a single document, and his achievements continued far after the declaration had been signed.

Jefferson drafted Virginia's statute on religious freedom and served as the state's governor. He served as America's minister to France, secretary of state, vice president, and president -- overseeing the Louisiana Purchase, which would double the nation's size, and launching the important Lewis and Clark expedition. Even after he retired, Jefferson continued to improve the country, stocking the Library of Congress with his books and founding the University of Virginia.

Thomas Jefferson was many things -- patriot, politician, philosopher, inventor -- but above all, he was a great president. Read about the life of this remarkable American patriot and intellectual.

Joseph C. Jastrzembski - The Apache Wars, The Fina l Resistance (2007).jpg

This book covers the final decades of the Apache wars and resistance in the 19th century; it follows a pretty chronological order. The first chapter has a brief look at Apache history and social customs including an explanation of tribal governing. The second has history on the beginning of the conflict, followed by the third chapter, which focuses on the American Government’s efforts to bring the Apaches to a reservation life. Successive chapters dedicate parts to known Apache leaders: Mangas, Coloradas, and Geronimo along with some lesser known leaders: Lozen, Juh, and Naiche. There is a chapter on the forced movement of the Apaches to Florida and Alabama. The book, then, comes full circle with Apaches allowed to return to land near their homes after being prisoners of war and marking the 100th anniversary of the surrender of Geronimo. This book would be excellent for social studies classes or young adult readers with an interest in US or American Indian history, as it is a very even handed portrayal of the conflict of the Apaches and the United States. The focus on the Apache government style of each tribe and group of Apaches being autonomous in their rule helps for a greater understanding of the problems with achieving peace between the two nations. Helge Ingstad - The Apache Indians, In Search of t he Missing Tribe (2004).jpg

Available in English for the first time, The Apache Indians tells the story of the Norwegian explorer Helge Ingstad’s sojourn among the Apaches near the White Mountain Reservation in Arizona and his epic journey to locate the “lost” group of their brethren in the Sierra Madres in the 1930s.

Ingstad traveled to Canada, where he lived as a trapper for four years with the Chipewyan Indians. The Chipewyans told him tales about people from their tribe who traveled south, never to return. He decided to go south to find the descendants of his Chipewyan friends and determine if they had similar stories. In 1936 Ingstad arrived in the White Mountains and worked as a cowboy with the Apaches. His hunch about the Apaches’ northern origins was confirmed by their stories, but the elders also told him about another group of Apaches who had fled from the reservation and were living in the Sierra Madres in Mexico. Ingstad launched an expedition on horseback to find these “lost” people, hoping to record more tales of their possible northern origin but also to document traditions and knowledge that might have been lost among the Apaches living on the reservation.

Through Ingstad’s keen and observant eyes, we catch unforgettable glimpses of the landscape and inhabitants of the southwestern borderlands as he and his Apache companions, including one of Geronimo’s warriors, embark on a dangerous quest to find the elusive Sierra Madre Apaches. The Apache Indians is a powerful echo of a past that has now become a myth.

Dick Martin - Rebuilding Brand America, What We Mu st Do to Restore Our Reputation And Safeguard the Future of American Business Abroad (2007).jpg

Anti-American feeling is at an all-time high. Other nations and cultures have singled out our businesses, government, and way of life for harsh scorn, widespread resentment, even violence.

Rebuilding Brand America is an exploration of anti-Americanism, from its causes and earliest manifestations to current efforts to mitigate it. Martin explains why many of these efforts failed, and reviews the many prescriptions formulated by more than a dozen task forces. He then bases his recommendations on the best practices of leading companies, and on his own 32-year career in public relations and brand management.

Rebuilding Brand America features exclusive interviews with journalists, media and PR professionals, and executives from global icons like McDonald's, Wal-Mart, and FedEx, and analyzes the groundbreaking work of thought leaders such as:

* Pollster John Zogby, whose insights into the Muslim world continue to inform policy in the Middle East
* Newsweek editor Fareed Zakaria, whose essay on the 9/11 attacks shed new light on the Islamic mind
* Keith Reinhard, president of Business for Diplomatic Action, a non-partisan business group organized to fight anti-Americanism by addressing its causes in U.S. business practice

Based on a deep understanding of anti-Americanism's roots, Rebuilding Brand America is a call to action that will help U.S.-based companies prosper in global markets.

James M. Volo, Dorothy Denneen Volo - Family Life in 19th-Century America (2007).jpg

Nineteenth century families had to deal with enormous changes in almost all of life's categories. The first generation of nineteenth century Americans was generally anxious to remove the "Anglo" from their Anglo-Americanism. The generation that grew up in Jacksonian America matured during a period of nationalism, egalitarianism, and widespread reformism. Finally, the generation of the pre-war decades was innately diverse in terms of their ethnic backgrounds, employment, social class, education, language, customs, and religion. Americans were acutely aware of the need to create a stable and cohesive society firmly founded on the family and traditional family values. Yet the people of America were among the most mobile and diverse on earth. Geographically, socially, and economically, Americans (and those immigrants who wished to be Americans) were dedicated to change, movement, and progress. This dichotomy between tradition and change may have been the most durable and common of American traits, and it was a difficult quality to circumvent when trying to form a unified national persona. Volumes in the Family Life in America series focus on the day-to-day lives and roles of families throughout history. The roles of all family members are defined and information on daily family life, the role of the family in society, and the ever-changing definition of family are discussed. Discussion of the nuclear family, single parent homes, foster and adoptive families, stepfamilies, and gay and lesbian families are included where appropriate. Topics such as meal planning, homes, entertainment and celebrations, are discussed along with larger social issues that originate in the home like domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, and divorce. Ideal for students and general readers alike, books in this series bring the history of everyday people to life.
