John Hubley (21)

John Hubley (21 de mayo de 1914 - 21 de febrero de 1977) fue un director de animación estadounidense, director de arte, productor y escritor de películas de animación tradicionales conocidas tanto por su experimentación formal como por su realismo emocional que surgió de su tendencia a utilizar las voces de sus propios hijos como dobladores de las películas.

Biografía
Hubley nació en Marinette, Wisconsin, de John Raymond Hubley (1880-1959) y Verena K. Hubley (1891-1978). Se mudó a Los Ángeles, California, para estudiar pintura en ArtCenter College of Design durante tres años. En 1935, obtuvo un trabajo como artista de fondo y diseño en Disney, donde trabajó en películas clásicas como Blancanieves y los siete enanitos, Pinocho, Dumbo y Bambi, así como en el segmento "El rito de la primavera" de Fantasía.

El 25 de febrero de 1939, el famoso arquitecto Frank Lloyd Wright visitó el estudio, y trajo consigo una copia de la película animada rusa The Tale of the Czar Durandai (1934), dirigida por Ivan Ivanov-Vano, que mostró a los artistas, entre ellos Hubley. Wright pensó que el estilo y diseño diferente, que era muy diferente de la animación típica de Disney, inspiraría y daría a los animadores nuevas ideas. A Hubley le gustó lo que vio y fue influenciado por él. Se fue de la compañía durante la huelga de animadores de Disney en 1941 y encontró trabajo dirigiendo películas para Screen Gems y la Primera Unidad de Películas del Ejército (Army's First Motion Picture Unit) hasta que se unió a United Productions of America, UPA, fundada por Stephen Bostow, Zack Schwartz, Dave Hilberman y el ex-animador de Disney Ub Iwerks. UPA pronto se hizo conocido por sus diseños altamente estilizados y animación limitada.

En 1949 fue el creador del personaje de dibujos animados de Mr. Magoo, basado en su tío, y dirigió la primera caricatura de Magoo con la voz de Jim Backus haciendo hablar a Magoo.

Se vio obligado a abandonar la UPA en 1952 cuando se negó a dar nombres ante el Comité de Actividades Antiamericanas de la Cámara de Representantes. Fundó Storyboard Studios el año siguiente y trabajó en comerciales (donde no se le acreditaría) como la creación del personaje de Marky Maypo, pero se vio obligado a rechazar proyectos más interesantes (como una adaptación de Finian's Rainbow) porque su nombre todavía estaba en la lista negra. Trasladó su estudio a Nueva York en 1955, donde cambió la producción a cortometrajes independientes.

Se casó con Faith Elliott (16 de septiembre de 1924 - 7 de diciembre de 2001) el mismo año que la mudanza del estudio, y colaboraron en casi todas las películas que hizo hasta su muerte en 1977 a los 62 años durante una cirugía de corazón.
