Stonemasonry

Mastercrafts Episode 6 of 6

Monty Don celebrates six of the traditional crafts that built our nation and its heritage, ranging from thatching to stonemasonry. Under Monty's watchful eye three hopefuls who are passionate about learning crafts are put through their paces by the country's leading practitioners

In this episode Monty looks at stonemasonry. Carpenter Nigel Woodford, 45; electrical testing engineer Simon Tack, 40; and art and design tutor Suzanne Jones, 39, take up their places as passionate amateurs in the shadow of an Elizabethan stately home - Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire.

It takes four to five years to train properly as a stonemason. During their six-week intensive course the rookies learn the foundations of the craft - everything from quarrying their own stone to intricate carving.

Stonemasonry was brought to Britain by the Romans over 2,000 years ago but it was the Norman Conquest and the Gothic cathedral builders of the Middle Ages that cemented the stonemason as a key master craftsman in Britain.

It was the skills and techniques of the stonemason that defined the look and build of the country right up to the Second World War. However, because of extensive bomb damage and the urgent need to rebuild, new techniques - such as prefabricated concrete buildings - put paid to the stonemason's craft. And much of the skilled work of stonemasons was diverted into restoration projects.

Our keen apprentices are instructed by their mentor Andy Oldfield, senior mason at Hardwick Hall with over 20 years of experience as a stonemason. Meanwhile, Monty finds out what role stonemasonry may have in the modern world of machine-based masonry.

Can the amateurs grasp the intricacies of the craft and design a unique work that will be displayed in the grounds of Hardwick Hall?

Weaving

Mastercrafts Episode 5 of 6

Monty Don celebrates six of the traditional crafts that built our nation and its heritage, ranging from thatching to stonemasonry. Under Monty's watchful eye, three hopefuls who are passionate about learning crafts are put through their paces by the country's leading practitioners

Monty enters the colourful world of the handloom weaver. Fashion designer Holly Berry, 26, ex-City business analyst Tref Davies, 35; and craft writer Momtaz Begum-Hossain, 28, head to the Sussex countryside to embark on an intensive introduction to this most complicated, but ultimately satisfying, of crafts.

2000 years ago, the Romans introduced hand looms to Britain and by the 15th century, British weaving was among the most accomplished in Europe. The industrial revolution and the invention of power looms turned the cottage weaving industry into a global market.

Nowadays there are fewer than 200 people in the UK making a career from hand weaving and the group's mentor, Margo Selby, is one of them. With thirteen years' experience behind her, she supplies internationally to top boutiques and prestigious department stores from her central London studio.

While the trainees grapple with winding warps, setting looms, threading headles and handling shuttles, Monty explores the importance of hand weaving in history, visiting Hampton Court to experience the finest examples of hand-woven tapestries in existence.

The trainees are immersed in the world of weaving, attempting to sell their woven wares to the general public. Finally, putting all they have learnt into practice, they are asked to both design and weave three-metre lengths of fabric to be judged by Michelle Bowen from the Arts Council and Angela Swan from the Worshipful Company of Weavers.

Stained Glass

Mastercrafts Episode 4 of 6

Monty Don puts three more passionate beginners through their paces as they follow their dreams of learning the ancient craft of stained glass.

The knowledge of manufacturing glass was brought to Britain by the Romans over two thousand years ago along with the seed of a new religion called Christianity. As this religion flourished and the great cathedrals of the Middle Ages soared up towards heaven, so the craft of stained glass rose to a similarly transcendent level as it strove to tell Bible stories to a largely illiterate congregation while pouring God's light into these Gothic buildings.

In this episode, full-time mum Abigail Ross, 40, trainee architect James Wignall, 24, and grandmother Valerie Rolls, 67, take up their places as enthusiastic beginners in a south London glass studio to learn this ancient craft.

It takes four to five years to train properly as a stained glass craftsman. During their six-week course, our trainees will learn the foundations of the craft - from how to cut glass incredibly accurately to leading up and glazing a window.

As they are instructed by their mentor Sophie Hussein, who has been working in the field of stained glass for nearly twenty years, Monty will explore the importance of stained glass and follow its journey, not only through history, but also from its molten raw state to its finished splendour within a stained glass window.

Can the apprentices grasp the craft and end up following in the footsteps of the master glazers of the past by designing and making a story window fit to grace a public building?

Blacksmithing

Mastercrafts Episode 3 of 6

Monty Don celebrates six of the traditional crafts that built our nation and its heritage, ranging from thatching to stonemasonry. Under Monty's watchful eye three hopefuls who are passionate about learning crafts are put through their paces by the country's leading practitioners

The humble village smithy was, for centuries, the most important place in the village and it was the craft of the blacksmith, more than any other, that during the industrial revolution transformed Britain into the great workshop of the world.

Market trader Dominic Branch, 37, museum educator Gill Fewings, 47, and architectural illustrator Hugh Gallagher, 40, take up their places as enthusiastic beginners in a three-hundred-year-old forge in Humberside to learn this ancient craft.

It takes four to five years to train properly as a blacksmith. During their six-week course, our trainees learn the foundations of the craft - from how to forge precision decorative panels to making their own tools.

They are instructed by Don Barker, the first working blacksmith in 200 years to be appointed to the court of the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths. He has made ironwork for the royal family, Westminster Abbey and St Paul's Cathedral.

While Monty explores the importance of blacksmithing in history and joins in an experiment to test the same method the Romans would have used to smelt iron ore, the trainees learn how to make everything from nails to scrolls and snubs; finally putting all they have learnt into practice to design and forge decorative front gates, unassisted, for local Ferriby residents.

Can they pull it off and impress not only their clientele but the only living Gold Medal holder of the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths, Bob Hobbes?

Thatching

Mastercrafts Episode 2 of 6

Monty Don celebrates six of the traditional crafts that built our nation and its heritage, ranging from thatching to stonemasonry.

Under Monty's watchful eye, three hopefuls who are passionate about learning these trades are put through their paces by the country's leading practitioners of wood craft, metal work, thatching, stone masonry, weaving and stained glass. After six weeks of apprenticeship and hard labour, their work and achievements are judged by experts in their chosen field to see who has best mastered the craft.

In the second episode, Monty Don meets three enthusiasts who are passionate about learning to thatch as a career change. Monty, who seriously considered becoming a thatcher, charts the students' progress and explores the fascinating history of each craft. Roofer Colin Wombwell, aged 36; arts therapist Kate Edwards, aged 40, and painter and decorator Sam Hare, aged 37, begin their intensive apprenticeship, undeterred by the gruelling schedule.

Thatch used to cover half a million of the nation's roofs in 1900. But with only 30,000 thatched roofs now remaining, Oxfordshire-based master thatchers Matt Williams and Dave Bragg are now among just 1,000 thatchers left in the country. But with 25 years experience between them, Matt and Dave are well equipped to take on the rookies and teach them all they know.

While Monty unpacks the importance of thatch in our nation's history, the trainees are taught the fundamentals of the craft - from learning how to bend the hazel spars that keep thatch on the roof, to packing and blending the straw correctly to ensure the roof remains waterproof, before being put to the ultimate test - laying a piece of thatch on an 800-year-old property. But the question is, is it good enough to stay there?

Green Wood Craft

Mastercrafts Episode 1 of 6

Monty Don, a huge fan of traditional crafts, presents a series which celebrates six of the craft skills that built Britain and its heritage, ranging from thatching to stonemasonry.

Under Monty's watchful eye, three hopefuls who are passionate about learning these trades are put through their paces by the country's leading practitioners of wood craft, metalwork, thatching, stonemasonry, weaving and stained glass. After six weeks of apprenticeship and labour, their work and achievements are judged by experts in their chosen field to see who has best mastered the craft.

In the first episode, 46-year-old garden designer Charles Hooper, full-time student and single mum Sarah Charlton, 33, and 29-year-old supply teacher Tom Vaughan begin their intensive apprenticeship working with green wood, undeterred by the gruelling schedule.

There are a little over 600 dedicated green wood workers in the country today, including the episode's mentor Guy Mallinson. He left a successful cabinet making business in London for a new life in Dorset, devoted to the simplicity of green wood craft. He works without power tools, screws or glue or fixings - just freshly cut or unseasoned wood and ingenious tools, such as the pole lathe and the steam bender.

While Monty explores the importance of green wood in history, the trainees learn how to cleave the raw material, to turn blocks of wood on the pole lathe, and to manipulate the components fresh out of the steam bender. Then comes the final test - designing a chair and making it with no assistance.

Can they pull it off and impress the country's leading authority and published author on green wood, Mike Abbott?
