Sara Crane is awoken by the sound of her security alarm going off. Her and her teenage daughter, Kimmy Crane, race outside only to realize the scary incident was a false alarm. It’s then they realize that police officer Edward Crane, Sara’s husband, and Kimmy’s father, is missing. Things go from bad to worse when Edward gets shot and killed by his former partner, Jack Irons, in what seems like a case of cop-gone-bad. Sara goes into mourning and months go by as she barely leaves the house. But at the urging of Kimmy, Sara ventures out to the grocery store. While driving in her husband’s sedan, hooked up with the high-tech Roadlink GPS security help system, the engine conks out. A voice on the other end of the Roadlink line tells Sara that he has hacked into her Roadlink system and has full control of her car. He informs her she better do what he says because he has kidnapped her daughter, and will kill her if Sara doesn’t do exactly what he says. Sara if forced to go on a series of increasingly demanding tasks while Sheldon Wilkes, the man on the other end of the Roadlink speaker, has Sara do his bidding. Wilkes is an agoraphobic criminal who manipulates the world around him using the Internet and the everyday technology that defines our lives. And Sara must play a deft game of cat and mouse with Wilkes, or she’ll never see her daughter again. Once a cop herself, Sara is slowly forced to cross the line into criminal behavior in order to save her daughter’s life. Wilkes demands that Sara seek out Paulo Farina, a former criminal colleague who is due to testify against him. Sara tracks Farina down in a sleazy hotel and takes him into her car at gun point.
