Pewnej strasznej nocy 1983r. Diane Down ( Farrah Fawcett ) przybywa do szpitala z powodu ran postrzałowych. Down twierdzi że ona i jej trojka dzieci zostali zaatakowani przez mężczyznę który usiłował ukraść jej samochód. Kilka dni później umiera jedna z jej córek, najmłodszy syn jest sparaliżowany a kolejna, 8-letniacorka jest tak przerażona że straciła mowę.
Oburzony tym straszliwym przestępstwem policjant Frank Józiak wszczyna szczegółowe śledztwo. Stopniowo dochodzi on do przekonania, że to sama matka dzieci – Diane Down próbowała zamordować swoje dzieci ponieważ jej przyjaciel Lew Lewinston (Ryan O’Neal ) nie chciał podjąć się roli ojca.
On the 19th of May 1983 Diane Downs stops at the McKenzie-Williamette-Hospital and cries for help. She is wounded on her arm and her three children are also wounded seriously. She says that a stranger shot at them but the investigation of detective Welch bring out that Diane is a liar.
