Celtic Spirit is a band dedicated to presenting the traditional folk music of Ireland and Scotland along with contemporary and original compositions that we weave into our shows at all of the great locations where we have the fortune to perform. We have great respect for the traditions that we continue and owe a deep gratitude not only to the composers of the songs we play, but also to all those who have influenced our music through the years. We love to share the music that flows through our collective souls with our families, fellow musicians, friends and fans that we meet along the way and we are endlessly searching for new songs to play for our all of you!

Terry was born with “Music on the Brain,” an incurable defect that results in the insatiable desire to be involved in music anywhere and everywhere. The later stages of this deformity result in blackouts with the infected individual wandering into pubs all around the world while singing songs uncontrollably. Sadly, it’s an incurable birth defect, but one that does have it’s upside!

At the tender age of 8 years Terry first touched the keys of a piano under the nervous guidance of a teacher in a little town way down south in Maryland. But after a few years he decided that he needed to punish his parent’s ears a little more and took up the trumpet. In his teens he found himself playing the fife while tweeting away some great Civil War songs, which made his Da happy as he was a huge Civil War buff! Then came the late teen years and back to the keyboards he went finding himself playing Pop, Funk and New-Wave music all around the southeastern PA area! Picture Terry in a black jumpsuit with a blue lightening bolt down the front! Oh shades of Elvis!!!

Lo and behold his first trip to Ireland in 1994 totally blew him away with their traditional music, and he came home with a tin whistle in his pocket. It was the cheapest instrument he could find, so he felt he had nothing to loose right (plus it satisfied the frugal Scotsman in him as well!). Within two years he was tweeting away on Irish and Scottish Tunes and in 2000 he finally came out of the closet and found himself playing around the area once again. Fortunately for all you fans out there he decided to retire the jumpsuit for a more current look….is that a sigh of relief we hear?

It’s been a blast ever since then for Terry, and he even picked up the Button Accordion back in 2002 to add to is arsenal of instruments. Who knows what new instrument is on the forefront…Watch Out! Terry loves this music, and feels that being able to play and sing for all of you fans out there is simply brilliant! Terry is proud of his Irish and Scottish roots, and you’ll even find him clad in Kilt at times…with questionable undergarments too!

So come out and join in the Ceol and Craic, and don’t be bashful! If you can sing a tune or play an instrument, he loves when you join in on the fun!

Conceived during the holiday season of 1942-43, Jim was blessed with two music-loving parents. Mom could play piano, and Dad loved to listen to Enrico Caruso on 78’s.

Nine or ten years later, Dad brought home a Zenith “portable” radio (with tubes!), equipped with several powerful bands to included short-wave. FM was mostly classical in those days, and AM was “The Bomb!”

One Saturday night, Jim discovered WSM and though not always clear, a whole new world exploded. There was more than Mambo! Jim’s discoveries soon included WWVA in Wheeling, and one of the New York Stations that had a regular folk music show.

The magic that is folk music soon had him hooked. Long before the “folk revival” of the late 50’s and 60’s, Jim was searching for anything that even sounded folkie.

At 16, a Montgomery Ward plywood guitar became his focus (he’s still playing it at home from time to time….). The string action was so high that he could lay his head on the finger-board and look up at the strings! Never discouraged, he learned the magnificent G, C and D7 Chords. He found the E Chord to be very cool as well, and when he played his first minor chord…he was officially tagged as a folk guitarist and folk singer for life!

Many years passed and Jim continues to collect music. He even played a little rock and roll for a very short time on one of “them there eelectric geetar’s!” His first mandolin was a wedding present and it was love at first sight (for shame…cheating on his wife already, and with a mandolin to boot???). Next it was jam sessions at a local folk-singer’s house and then a long journey with various musicians as the Wild Geese Band. As a “goose” Jim got his first taste of Celtic music.

Jim’s journey now with Celtic Spirit is a new chapter in his musical road of life, and the fresh new challenges and the wonderful people Jim meets along the way, he finds truly rewarding.

Jack Rickenbach.png

Jack Rickenbach, the newest member of Celtic Spirit, is a veteran performer as well as a partner in an A/V production company. Jack’s earliest musical memories include hearing his Granddad playing the tenor banjo at family gatherings and “sitting in” with the band as a toddler playing percussion on pretzel tin cans. At home he grew up listening to his Dad’s 78’ records of gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt. Jack’s love of vocal harmony was nurtured by both his Dad and Granddad who sang in barbershop quartets and later, as a teenager, listening to the layered pop vocals of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys.

It was a “double dog dare ya” performance at a high school hootenanny that got Jack seriously bitten by the folk music bug. He headed off to St. Joseph’s University packing a 5 string banjo which he acquired with his Mom’s green stamps (who needed a new toaster oven anyway?). There he met a young visionary Jesuit and together they formed a group called the New Spirit Singers. Under Brother Curry’s guidance, they pioneered the folk mass liturgy in Philadelphia colleges, high schools and local parish churches. The group also performed at local coffee houses, including the Main Point, and were a regular feature on Anita Cleaver’s “The World Around Us” TV show on ABC. The group performed its last concert with John Denver as the headliner and joined him on stage for their finale – a very special memory for Jack.

A few years later, three of the NSS reunited to form the band Sweet Life. Playing at venues around Philly and Baltimore, the group evolved into a soft rock band with new members and developed a loyal following. Sweet Life played regularly at the Jersey Shore as the house band at Fred’s Tavern in Stone Harbor for six summers until 1983, when they disbanded on friendly terms and Jack focused on family and career for the next twenty years. Jack’s musical hibernation ended when he saw Paul McCartney play the ukulele in concert in 2003 and was inspired to get one.

Playing the uke opened up many new doors including playing on some Irish sessions with Terry and Jim who Jack had met some years earlier. Jack found that the 10 string Tiple (think of it as a uke on steroids) fit in nicely with Irish music and added a different voicing to the tunes. Jack has quickly developed a love of Celtic music and has convinced Terry that he does in fact, have some Irish blood (had to go back three generations to find it!) and therefore is not a total carpetbagger.

Invited to join Celtic Spirit in the summer of ’07, Jack is excited by the new musical horizons opening up to him. “The songs are spirited and the melodies are beautiful – just like the people who come out to see us!”
