This work fills the gap for a much needed analytical philosophical work articulating and defending agnosticism as a critique of both theism and atheism. "The Errors of Atheism" is a response to the glaring gap that exists in the analytical philosophical literature on the problem of whether or not God exists. While on the one hand there is the large body of work by orthodox Christian theists such as Alvin Plantinga and Richard Swinburne, and relatively few atheists like Kai Nielsen who challenge certain orthodox Christian theistic arguments and analysis, there is on the other hand a lack of analytical philosophical work articulating and defending agnosticism as a critique of both theism and atheism. Corlett argues that the conceptual depths of theism must be explored beyond orthodoxy in order to re-open the debate about whether or not God exists. "The Errors of Atheism" is a piece of analytical philosophy of religion that seeks to disrupt the prevalent way of thinking about the problem of God amongst atheists and theists alike. Philosophy of religion has been dominated by well-intentioned analytical philosophers, most all of whom presuppose various traditional Christian doctrines and thus do not take non-orthodox theism seriously, and by a few atheists who also presume that orthodox Christian theism is the only theism worth addressing. Professor Corlett, however, argues that the truth lies somewhere between these two positions.

Western philosophy and religion, Rachels argues, have been shaken by the implications of Darwin's work, most notably the controversial idea that humans are simply a more complex kind of animal. Rachels assesses a number of studies that suggest how closely humans are linked to other primates in behavior, and then goes on to show how this idea undercuts the work of many prominent philosophers. Kant's famous argument that suicide reduces one to the level of an animal, for instance, is meaningless if humans are, in fact, animals. Indeed, humanity's membership in the animal kingdom calls into question the classic notions of human dignity and the sacredness of human life. What we need now, Rachels contends, is a philosophy that does not discriminate between different species, one that addresses each being on an individual basis.
With this sweeping survey of the arguments, the philosophers, and the deep implications surrounding Darwinism, Rachels lays the foundations for a new view of morality. In The Adapted Mind, Jerome Barkow, along with Leda Cosmides and John Tooby, set out to redefine evolutionary psychology for the social sciences and to create a new agenda for the next generation of social scientists. While biologically oriented psychologists quickly accepted the work, social scientists in psychology and researchers in anthropology and sociology, who deal with the same questions of human behavior, were more resistant. Missing the Revolution is an invitation to researchers from these disciplines who, in Barkow's view, have been missing the great evolution-revolution of our time to engage with Darwinian thought, which is now so large a part of the non-sociological study of human nature and society.

Barkow asks the reader to put aside the preconceptions and stereotypes social scientists often have of the "biological" and to take into account a powerful paradigm that is far away from those past generations who would invoke a vocabulary of "genes" and "Darwin" as justification for genocide. The evolutionary perspective, Barkow maintains, provides no particular support for the status quo, no rationalizations for racism or any other form of social inequality. "Cultural" cannot possibly be opposed to "biological" because culture and society are the only means we have of expressing our evolved psychology; social-cultural constructionism is not only compatible with an evolutionary approach but demanded by it. To marshal evidence for his argument, Barkow has gathered together eminent scholars from a variety of disciplines to present applications of evolutionary psychology in a manner intended to illustrate their relevance to current concerns for social scientists.

The contributors include, among others, evolutionary psychologist Anne Campbell, a Darwinian feminist who reaches out to feminist social cosntructionists; sociologist Ulica Segarstrale, who analyzes the opposition of the "cultural left" to Darwinism; sociologist Bernd Baldus, who criticizes evolutionists for ignoring agency; criminologist Anthony Walsh, who presents a biosocial criminology; and primatologists Lars Rodseth and Shannon A. Novak, who reveal an unexpected uniqueness to human social organization. Missing the Revolution is a challenge to scholars to think critically about a powerful social and intellectual movement which insists that the theoretical perspective that has been so successful when applied to the behavior of other animal species can be applied to our own.

That humanity continues to turn to magic for answers about the universe, human beings, and their interaction with the world demonstrates that it is not a mode of thinking which can be dated to a certain time period, The history of the western magical tradition defied the existence of a world process of rationalisation.
This thesis will show how the tradition did so in the Renaissance and continued to do so in a revival of that same magical system in nineteenth-century England. Specifically, in this study we will focus on the establishment and development of cabalistic magic and how it provided the ideal system in which many currents of esotericism could be assimilated.
We will show how this synthesis began in the Renaissance by scholars such as Pico della Mirandola, Johannes Reuchlin and Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim, and we will show how the process was concluded by Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, a cofounder of a nineteenth-century English magical society, The Hemetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Along the way we will discuss the contributions of various scholars and occultists and demonstrate their roles in either maintaining and, or expanding the system of cabalistic magic.

An excellent resource on the contemporary practice of witchcraft and on the ancient traditions that inspired it, this book features both short entries on terminology and concepts and longer articles on the development of various esoteric and neopagan organizations. A lengthy introduction by Lewis (religious studies, World Univ. of America) details the pivotal role that Margaret Murray and Gerald Gardner had in shaping the rituals and hierarchies still accepted by witch covens in Britain and America today. The text frankly demonstrates that much of what Gardner and Murray wrote was based on conjecture, fabrication, and spurious scholarship, but it treats the organizations that evolved (at least from Gardner's vision) with respect, documenting their influence on the ecological movement, the women's movement, and religious reform. The bibliography lists print and online resources, and two appendixes offer a chronology of the development of modern witchcraft. Unfortunately, the book rarely mentions differences in practices or beliefs among the many traditions that exist today, giving little practical information for a reader interested in choosing between one organization and another. Recommended for public and academic libraries.

"Wygłosiłem wiele wykładów, których przedmiotem były tematy podejmowane w tej książce; te moje wystąpienia zwykle oceniane były jako »kontrowersyjne«. Nie wątpię, że i tę książkę recenzenci nazwą »kontrowersyjną«"[1] – w taki oto sposób autor "Zmierzchu i upadku imperium Freuda" uprzedził mnie w ocenie jego książki. Podobnie jak jej pierwsze słowa i tytuł, cała praca jest dobrze skomponowana, zwięzła, mocna i sugestywna, ale jednocześnie jakby z posmakiem zbytniej waleczności i zadufania w sobie.

Autor, guru psychologii drugiej połowy XX wieku, twórca słynnej teorii osobowości, orędownik metod eksperymentalnych i terapii behawioralnej, stara się przekazać kilka istotnych faktów: po pierwsze, osobowość Freuda - jako uzależnionego od matki, niezaspokojonego seksualnie kokainisty - niestety negatywnie wpłynęła na jego zdolność myślenia i tworzenia teorii. Po drugie: badania dowodzą, że psychoanaliza jest skrajnie nieskuteczna, a teoria seksualności dziecięcej nie pokrywa się z rzeczywistością, podobnie jak mit o ojcobójstwie wyznaczającym początek kultury. Po trzecie: interpretacja snów nie odkrywa niczego, czego byśmy sami o sobie nie wiedzieli, a na pewno nie prowadzi do ujawnienia wypartych pragnień z dzieciństwa. Podsumowując: "To, co jest nowe w tych teoriach, nie jest prawdą, a to, co jest prawdą, nie jest nowe"[2].

Zasadniczo taka książka, jak "Zmierzch i upadek" jest bardzo potrzebna. Urzeczywistnia spokojne i racjonalne spojrzenie na dzieło Freuda, podejście do niego na tych samych zasadach, co do innych psychologów. Prostuje dziesiątki wniosków, dopowiada wiele faktów. Umożliwia przez to odbrązowienie autorytetu. A wszystko to za pomocą idealnego - zwięzłego i działającego na wyobraźnię - stylu. Fakt, że książka jest niewielka objętościowo, a przy tym tak ciekawa i rzetelna, że autor nie omieszkał wskazać nam najlepszych prac do dalszej lektury, jednym słowem - jej walor popularnonaukowy, jest jej największą zaletą.

Niestety, istnieje też największa wada, już zasygnalizowana. Naprawdę nie da się uniknąć wrażenia, że Eysenck zajmuje stanowisko niezwykle nieugodowe. Przemilcza osiągnięcia Freuda – to, że zadał on tyle wartościowych pytań w dziedzinie osobowości, rozwoju dziecka, dynamiki relacji międzyludzkich, że faktycznie zapoczątkował psychoterapię. Autor zaledwie wspomina, że psychoanaliza jest ogromnie trafna z hermeneutycznego punktu widzenia, ale nie rozwija tego wątku (ma swoje powody, lecz można z nimi dyskutować).

Potencjalnym czytelnikom książkę polecam, niech jednak mają się na baczności i, jak mawiał sam pan Eysenck, nie wierzą niczemu, czego sami nie sprawdzą.
