Romilly James Heald Jenkins was a scholar distinguished by his contribution to three separate, though related, fields: the archaeology of classical Greece; modern Greek poetry; and the study of medieval Byzantium. He was born in 1907 at Hitchin in England, and was educated at the Leys School and at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, graduating in 1929 as the Chancellor's Classical Medallist. From 1930 to 1934 he was a student at the British School of Archaelogy in Athens, and took part in the excavations carried out under the School's auspices at Isthmia and Perachora. His interest in modern Greek literature resulted in his appointment in 1936 as Lewis Gibson Lecturer in Modern Greek at Cambridge University, a position he held for ten years. After serving in the Foreign Office during the war, he was elected in 1946 Koraes Professor of Modern Greek and Byzantine History, Language and Literature at King's College, London University

The notion of aristocracy has been a godsend to modern historians : it is so admirably imprecise. It literally means the rule of the beat, but it leaves in doubt who are the best-fitted to rule; the assumption being that those who have power are best-fitted to exercise it. Aristocracy has therefore come to mean little more than a ruling class, but, because power so often descends within a family fro one generation to the next, the word is usually given hereditary overtones. Aristocracy and nobility are therefore often taken to be no more than different sides of the same coin. The formwer deals in the exercise of power, the latter in the qualities and the qualifications needed. A shift in the meaning of nobility will alter the character of aristocracy and vice versa.

What the emperor or em did, or did not do, could rapidly confront ordinary Byzantines with economic ruin, new religious doctrines, or conquest by a foreign power. Much attention is paid to the complex life of the court and bureaucracy that has given us the adjective "byzantine." The major personalities include such famous names as Constantine, Justinian, Theodora, and Heraclius, along with lesser-known figures like Constans II, Irene, Basil II the Bulgar-Slayer, and Michael VIII Palaeologus.
Byzantine civilization emerges as durable, creative, and realistic, overcoming repeated setbacks to remain prosperous almost to the end. With 221 illustrations and 18 maps that complement the text, A History of the Byzantine State and Society should long remain the standard history of Byzantium not just for students and scholars but for all readers.

The cultural and religious crisis through which the Roman Empire was passing in the fourth century is one of the most significant events in the history of the world. The old pagan culture came into collision with Christianity, which received official recognition during the reign of Constantine at the beginning of the fourth century and was declared the dominant State religion by Theodosius the Great at the end of that same century. It might have seemed at first that these two clashing elements, representing two diametrically opposed points of view, would never find a basis for mutual agreement. But Christianity and pagan Hellenism did intermix gradually to form a Christian-Greco-Eastern culture subsequently known as Byzantine.
