The popular image of the Kalahari is a romantic one of desert space and untouched Bushmen. The popular image of the Afrikaners is of a unique and vicious racialism. Yet Afrikaners have been living in the Kalahari for more than a hundred years, their presence often studiously ignored by writers; and since 1961 independent Botswana with its policy of scrupulous non-racialism has embraced both Afrikaner and Bushman in common citizenship. This book attempts to describe the complex and mundane reality of ethnic relations in the Kalahari, not only in the present, harried by relentless pressure to enter the cash economy of modernisation, but in the past. Using oral history as a source, the authors describe the 'Africanisation' of these poor white pastoralists of the interior, cut off by the thirstland from those influences which gave contemporary Afrikanerdom its particular cast. They describe the pragmatic relations developed by Afrikaners with other peoples of the interior, and how these have been perceived and redefined with the decisive shift in political power from British to Tswana hands.

Col F.F. Pienaar's Boer War diary.pdf

In 1902, Filip Pienaar, a young Boer officer in exile at the Monastery of Tomar in Portugal, recorded his Boer war experiences. These were published by Methuen in 1902, under the title With Steyn and De Wet, The book was banned one month after publication, The author, Lt Col F.F. Pienaar, later joined the Union Defence Force, served in the German South West Africa Campaign and later became South Africa's first ambassador to Portugal in 1939, from where he also conducted correspondence with his cousin General Dan Pienaar. As a son-in-law of the late F.F. Pienaar, it is my privilege to reproduce part of his Boer War experiences. Pienaar's account is one of the first books on the Boer War and covers several eye-witness accounts at that time.

Counter-Insurgency in Rhodesia.pdf

On 11 November 1965 the British colony of Southern Rhodesia unilaterally declared its independence. Prime Minister Ian Douglas Smith made this declaration fully confident that his Rhodesian Front Party could maintain power indefinitely for the white minority group it represented. Only fifteen years later on 18 April 1980, Zimbabwe emerged as an independent country under majority rule with international recognition. Mr Smith's major adversory, Robert Mbellarmine Mugabe, became the new prime minister of this fledgeling state. During the intervening years a relentless war had been waged. The two black nationalist armies, ZANLA and ZPRA gained ascendency over the smaller but technically superior armed forces of Rhodesia. This bitter struggle can be seen as a classic model of insurgent versus counter-insurgent strategies. The final outcome permanently altered the balance of power in the sub-continent of Southern Africa.

Louis Botha (ur. 27 września 1872, zm. 27 sierpnia 1919) – południowoafrykański polityk i wojskowy, pierwszy premier tego kraju.
W 1897 roku został członkiem parlamentu Transwalu, reprezentując okręg Vryheid. Dwa lata później walczył w II wojnie burskiej przeciwko Wielkiej Brytanii, m.in. dowodząc w bitwie na Spion Kop.
Kierował delegacją na rozmowy pokojowe z Brytyjczykami w 1902 i był sygnatariuszem traktatu w Vereeniging. Po wojnie był jednym z najbardziej wpływowych ludzi w Południowej Afryce, aktywnie angażował się w odbudowę kraju po wojnach burskich, a przez swoich rodaków był traktowany jako nieformalny przywódca Burów. 4 marca 1907 został premierem Transwalu, zaś 31 maja 1910 pierwszym premierem Związku Południowoafrykańskiego. W 1911, wraz z innym bohaterem wojen burskich, Janem Smutsem, stworzył Partię Południowoafrykańską (SAP).
Po I wojnie światowej kierował krótko brytyjską misją wojskową w Polsce w czasie wojny polsko-bolszewickiej. W czasie ustalania warunków traktatu wersalskiego bronił państw centralnych przed zbyt surowymi warunkami.

The volunteer movement at Graaff Reinet (1856-1882 ).pdf

The history of Graaff Reinet provides the earliest examples of civil defence in South Africa, for it was here that the early settlers established the commando system in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Frontier Wars [1779-81, 1793 and 1799-1803]. Subsequently in the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Frontier Wars, the pattern of civil defence changed considerably when the burghers joined with Imperial forces. Significantly too, but it was a Graaff Reinetter who led the Voortrekkers to victory in 1838 at the Battle of Blood River. However, after 1850 the spirit of militarism was dying a natural death.

Commando has for many years been regarded as one of the best narratives of war and adventure in the English language. While still in his teens Deneys Reitz served in the Boer forces during the South African War and, after fighting to the bitter end, chose exile in Madagascar rather than life under the British flag. It was during those years of banishment that he set down, while it was still vivid in his memory, this record of battle and guerilla warfare. The word 'commando' has been made familiar to us, these last few years, by the exploits of those picked men who harried the enemy by many spectacular and desperate stratagems in the Second World War. It was originally, of course, the Boer word used for those mobile columns of fighting men which, despite their inferiority in numbers and supplies, held out and hit back so vigorously against the British in South Africa. This chronicle of forced marches, ambuscades, night attacks and narrow escapes shows why the Boer resistance took so long to crack. Fritz learned the craft of the guerilla under such masters as Botha, De la Rey and Smuts, and from Smuts he learned, too, in due course the arts of peace, for it was Smuts who persuaded Reitz to return to South Africa and help in building the young Dominion. In that capacity Reitz showed the same qualities of wisdom, courage and leadership which he had developed as a fighting man, and he crowned a brilliant career of public service to the Union of South Africa by becoming its High Commissioner in London.
He has related these chapters of his life in such later books as 'Trekking On' and 'No Outspan' — but 'Commando', written in his early twenties, remains his master-piece and has won its place as a classic of adventure.
