CLUB HISTORY

1946 - „Zawisza” Lubin Sports Club is formed, which includes the first official football team in Lubin
1949 – Change of name to „Gwardia” Lubin
1951 – Change of name to „Spójnia” Lubin
1953 – Return to the name „Zawisza” Lubin
1959 – Watershed moment for the club as a state company, KGHM, is formed to oversee the excavation of a large copper deposit in the area
1960 – Due to the development of mining activities, the club changes its’ name to „Górnik” Lubin and becomes intrinsically linked to KGMH as it is to this day
1966 – Final change of insignia as the „Zagłębie Lubin Football Club” of today is formed
1972 – Zagłębie makes its first stadium upgrade, moving to the ‘Mining Stadium’
1975 – First promotion to the Polish second-tier
1985 – First promotion to the Polish first-tier as Zagłębie move to a new and much larger stadium, the ‘Mining Sports Complex’, with an initial capacity of over 35,000. It was the most modern football facility in Poland at the time and it stood on the site of the new stadium in which Zagłębie Lubin play today
28 July 1985 – First top-tier game as Zagłębie Lubin wins 1:0 with GKS Katowice with a goal from Eugeniusz Ptak
1987 – The ‘Mining Sports Complex’ plays host to the Polish national side for the first time, as Poland beat East Germany 2:0
1989 – A capacity record crowd of 50,110 watches Poland draw 1:1 with the USSR in Poland’s second and last game played in Lubin
1990 – Zagłębie Lubin are runners up in the Polish top-tier
1990 – First European adventure for the club as Zagłębie are knocked out of the first round of the UEFA Cup after two 1:0 defeats by Italian side Bologna
1991 – Zagłębie Lubin are crowned Champions of Poland for the first time under the management of first Stanislaw Swierk and then Marian Putyra
1991 – Zagłębie Lubin make their debut in the European Champions Cup, with a 4:2 aggregate defeat to Brondby of Denmark marking their exit in the first round
1991 – Zagłębie Lubin fans are voted ‘Best fans in Poland’ in a national survey
26 September 1995 – Zagłębie Lubin play host to their most prestigious opponents to-date as the mighty AC Milan arrive for a UEFA Cup tie. The Italian club, with Roberto Baggio, Alessandro Costacurta, Paolo Maldini and Marcel Desailly amongst others on the pitch, win 4:1, with Jarosław Krzyżanowski scoring the sole goal for Zagłębie
2005 – Zagłębie Lubin play in the final of the Polish Cup for the first time. After a close two-legged affair the Cup is won by Groclin 2:1 on aggregate
2006 – Second Polish Cup final appearance in two years, however another aggregate defeat, this time 6:3 to Wisła Płock
2006 – An away goals defeat to Belarusian club Dinamo Minsk ends Zagłębie’s first UEFA cup appearance in over ten years
26th May 2007 – Zagłębie Lubin are crowned champions of Poland, under the management of Czesław Michniewicz
2007 – Zagłębie Lubin’s debut in the Champions League ends at the qualification stage, as former European Champions Steaua Bucharest prove too strong. After a brave fight Zagłębie lose 3:1 on aggregate
2007 – Zagłębie Lubin officially change their name to KGHM Zagłębie Lubin as the copper and silver Mining Conglomerate becomes the outright owner of the Football Club
14th March 2009 – The Dialog Arena opens, only the second modern football stadium in Poland at the time. Zagłębie celebrate the opening of their new home with a 3:0 win over Górnik Łeczna
2009-2011 – Zagłębie Lubin is officially hailed as one of Poland’s leading youth development centres as the U-21 and U-19 teams win two titles each in their respective championships
10th August 2011 – After a twenty-two year absence the Polish national team returns to Lubin to take on Georgia in a friendly international.
2012 – After the appointment of former Czech Republic midfielder Pavel Hapal as manager, the club sees a dramatic change in fortune. After a difficult 2011 Autumn Campaign, which saw Zagłębie in bottom place as the Ekstraklasa went into the winter break, the Spring Campaign saw Zagłębie take more points than any other team in the division and end the 2011/12 season in the comfort of mid-table. The club aim to build on this success and return to the forefront of Polish football, building not only on the history and tradition of the club, but also on a leading youth development strategy that is to set an example not just in Poland, but across Central and Eastern Europe.
