This book presents a number of new discoveries in arguing not only that Melville consciously used myths and mythologies in most of his major works, but that his whole career may be seen as an attempt to create a mythology of his own. After sketching briefly the historical context of comparative mythology in Melville’s day and showing Melville’s extensive knowledge in this area, Franklin discusses in detail Mardi, Moby-Dick, Pierre, Bartleby, Benito Cereno, The Confidence-Man, and Billy Budd. In each case he is able to show that Melville examines and compares particular myths, uses some of them as means of ordering and defining action, and dramatizes the mythmaking process itself. The Wake of the Gods is an unusually interesting and readable work of historical scholarship and critical interpretation.
