Dirty Fred, or in its original form: "Piszkos Fred" is one of the most valued treasure of Hungarian pulp literature for more than 70 years now. Its author, Jenő Rejtő lived a kind of vagabond, adventurer's life, which is clearly reflected in his works, in the stories he told, whether he was writing about criminals hiding in the French Foreign Legion, or British Naval officers working their way down into the Singapur Underworld.
Most of his stories were adapted into a comic book format during the 1960s by acclaimed comic strip artist, Pál Korcsmáros, and nowadays, Korcsmáros' grandson and his team are busy digitally revamping the original pages according to the modern expectations. This scanlated version is based on the newly coloured 2006 version of Piszkos Fred, a Kapitány.
For those, willing to delve into the curious world of Hungarian comics, it must be noted that we are talking about a style that is clearly different from both the British and American, and the artistic Franco-Belgian traditions. Hungarian comics are first and foremost Graphic Novel Adaptations, and as such, they are full of text and are pretty much void of dialogues containing "Aaargh!", "Slooop!" or "Baang!"
Most likely this is one of the reasons why most of the Hungarian comics never really got translated to other languages.
I'm not gonna lie, translating P. Howard - Jenő Rejtő wasn't an easy challenge. The story is full of jokes, and cultural references related to an era (the 1930s) to which most of us are not particularly familiar with. I owe an enormous amount of thanxXx to my proofer and retexter, and precious partner-in-crime, robruss1957, who managed to turn my kitchen-English translation into a living-breathing, and smooth text which is undoubtedly better than any (presently non-existing) official translations (would be, if there were any...).
I also would like to say a big thanxXx to Jimmy, an Albanian kitchen-porter, who works alongside me in a Sicilian Restaurant nowadays, and who is the perfect, real-life embodiment of Grinnin' Jimmy of this present comic book. ThanxXx Jimmy.

Classic Hungarian Comics translated to English!
Hi folks,
This thread is going to be dedicated to the works of classic Hungarian comic book authors, like Ernő Zórád, Attila Fazekas, Pál Korcsmáros, Imre Sebők, etc. and of course the provided scans will be translated to ENG. (help of proofreaders and native ENG correctors are warmly appreciated)
Most of the works will be comic book adaptations of classics literature, western, science fiction or fantasy, or occasionally pulp.
As far as Hungary is concerned comic book publication is currently dead and gone. The genre was popular under the Communist rule, though, when most of the greatest works were published, quite often in coloured, album type publications, now, these are the comics I am about to focus our attention on first.

This BW comic was originally released in a strip format only in Hungary under the 1980s, in a weekly periodical, and it is an adaptation of a 1964 science fiction from Zoltán Csernai.
The story is about extraterrestrials visiting ancient Sumeria, so in some ways it can be looked upon as one of the first works pioneering the idea of Ancient Aliens.
The cover is a result of joint cooperation between cyraxx, Édua and myself.

At the very early years of the 1800s a conspiracy is discovered in Paris. The conspirators' plan is to overcome Napoleon and to place another person on the throne, the only living member of the royal bloodline, the 12-year-old Marie. Napoleon takes a bloody revenge. Among those executed is the father of Vavel, a young officer in Napoleon's Army. The young man swears to avenge the death of his father. He accepts the task of hiding the girl abroad. Although the secret police does everything it can to recover them, their escape is successful. Vavel and Marie, in the company of two faithful followers cross the border. The Imperial Police sends its most efficient spy after them. Her mission is to recover the girl and the papers proving her identity. After four years of fruitless investigation Thémire finds the hiding place of the escapées. Vavel and the girl found refuge in the western part of Hungary, in castle nicknamed "the Nameless Castle" by the locals. Thémire, under the name of Catharina de Landsknechtschild moves to the neighbouring estate and starts to put her plan into action...

A science fiction adaptation of a Soviet-Russian author, Martynev, written and drawn by Ernő Zórád. The coloured album was originally released in 1985 in Hungary.

Imre Sebők was probably the earliest master of Classic Hungarian Comics. His career started before the 2nd world war, and stretched up until the late 70s. In Hungary, his works were mainly published in strip-formats in daily or weekly newspapers. His talent was internationally acclaimed, he was invited to work in Canada on some fashionable super-hero-type comics, but he boldly refused the offer. His comics were later introduced to other Communist countries as well, such as Yugoslavia, Poland and East Germany, sometimes even in coloured formats, too. He was one of the unrivaled masters of depicting human emotions in B&W, though.
Personally, he is my favourite artist among the Classic Hungarians, mainly because his style is surrounded by the same nostalgic feeling one can experience when watching oldies from the 30s, 40s.
This comic book adaptation of Homer's The Iliad has never before been released in album format. The scanned pages are directly from collected newspapers, edited, and remastered according to our opinions on how we think they should have looked, if... they were ever published.
Please, dont forget, this is old-school comics, an adaptation of a European Classic.

The ENG translation of Sebők's adaptation of Homer's Odyssey will hopefully come some time in 2014.

My very first scanlation was Karl May's Winnetou, the work of the talented artist: Ernő Zórád, and co-author: Tibor Cs. Horváth
Tibor Cs. Horváth was the most productive Hungarian comic book scriptwriter and the godfather of comic book adaptations.
Hungarian comic book artist Ernö Zórád was one of the most important and internationally acclaimed creators while his country was under Communist rule. He was mostly active as a book illustrator and with this experience started adapting many literary novels into comic book adaptations.
The story is a very philosophic one, like the best Stanislaw Lems' novels. More thoughts less action. The quality of the film is very 70s like (see "Space: 1999", filmed in the same year, 1975) in 3 parts. The brief story: because of some technical problems the whole crew of an interspace ship die on a distant planet. The ship waits silently for centuries for a new crew to take her home. Suddenly an early stoneage tribe appears nearby. She captures one of them and plants the knowledge of one of the original crew-members. More and more caveman turn into crew-members, but their smaller brain capacity causes emotional problems. Later on they find a more developed race. They fear the possibility that they will be raplaced, but they capture some of them. A death fight begins between the two sets of crew-members. The rest starts the way back to the Earth. They can land on the Moon, but life has changed on Earth very much after some centuries passed...
Originally appeared in 1971 in a daily periodical called: 'Népszava' in 100 parts. It was recently released as part of the Imre Sebők comic strip-collection, in 2015.
This, revamped KG-Special ENG scanlation used the scanned pages of the original Népszava strips.

A short special: Space Patrol Orion: The 8th Adventure (1969) Raumpatrouille
This title might not tell you much unless you are already in your late 50s perhaps. Raumpatrouille was a German sci-fi serie, often referred to as the German Star Trek. The respected comic book authors, Ernő Zórád and Tamás Alaksza committed an unofficial short (5 pages only) comic book episode for Orion in 1969.
In this version both the ENG and the original Hungarian editions are included.
