Owdowiały Kwai Chang Caine (David Carradine) wychowuje syna Petera (Chris Potter) w założonym przez siebie klasztorze Shaolin. Niestety, na skutek dramatycznych wydarzeń mężczyźni zostają rozdzieleni. Ojciec, przekonany o śmierci potomka, prowadzi odtąd życie samotnika, wierząc, że postępowanie w zgodzie z mistycznymi założeniami kung-fu przyniesie mu ukojenie i wewnętrzną harmonię. Tymczasem osierocony chłopak trafia do domu dziecka. Niebawem zostaje adoptowany przez oficera policji. Idąc w ślady opiekuna, wybiera zawód stróża prawa. Po wielu latach młody amerykański detektyw i mnich spotykają się. Porywczy, energiczny, wychowany na materialistycznych wzorcach Zachodu młody człowiek ma niewiele wspólnego ze skłonnym do medytacji ojcem. Wkrótce jednak odkrywa, że może przejąć od niego cenną wiedzę i poznać tajniki kung-fu...
